View Full Version : Best song for playing live to 13 year olds

I was lookn for song that has lots of energy but only to the complexity of a 13-year old audience. One or two guitars, and a piano is optional. I would do Smells Like Teen Spirit but i couldn't for stupid reasons. I understand this thread is stupid.
Ringo is God.
I understand this thread is stupid.
I would say Blue October's "Hate Me" would be a good song for these purposes.

So are you deadset on sacrificing your artistic integrity just to please a crowd of preteens? Why not pick a song you know is good so you can show them what a good song actually looks/sounds like?
Well, I think my suggestion is a pretty good middle ground...keep some intergrity intact, and play something they'll relate to.
Perhaps Locusts

hey i'm also in this situation...i was thinking about potentially playing one of these songs:
Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit(of course)
Jimmy Eat World-The Middle
Judas Priest-Heading Out To The Highway
Or we could just throw decency out the window and play "Angel of Death" or "Dead Skin Mask" or "I Cum Blood."

Sorry if my question sounded jackassish...but I just want to make it clear that you could play a dark sounding song if it was an emoish crowd, or a energetic catchy song if they were pop punker types and you know whatever the crowd likes but just make sure its a song that you like and you won't feel like an idiot playing and regret later.
So pick a song you like and you will feel comfortable playing on stage.

Play a catchy pop song that you like that gets played on MTV in the last few years. Simple.

Now come now, when I was 13, I was already into metal. Blanket statements are, as you like to put, "gay ****".
I'd say Party Hard by Andrew W.K. if you want a good, high energy song.

Dude, do what I do and educate them with the classics like Ozzy, Sabbath, AC/DC, Pink Floyd etc.
No need to do a bunch of technical sh*t, just get your *** up there and rock.
Most places that I've played at don't really care so much about song selection as they do about your personal ability to play them.
If it were me though, I'd play Cannibal Corpse's

What kind of 13 year olds? Tony Royster Jr. was about 13 when he broke out into the music community, and there are hundreds of 13 year olds who can play Bach and Mozart.

K well we'll assume it's your standard American 13 year old, if it's a crowd of Mozarts he's in trouble.

hmm... i think you should go for one song that's been played on MTV but not too recently. and if u get to play a second song, play a slightly heavier song that you normally play or an original.
i think it's important to have a famous song as an intro so ppl actually take notice and listen to the second.
when i played for a school gig. we were allowed only 1 song so we palyed an original. the crowd was passive at best.. a lot of ppl listen to POP thats why it's POPular and the rock they know is what they see on MTV. Thats why I wouldnt waste my time playing at shows where you know your kind of music isn't appreciated.

13 yr olds like gay **** like blink-182 and rap
i assume you say Blink 182 is crap because you know it's just the shallow mainstream face of modern rock music that does not, in any form, represent the genre itself.
but to generalize and say rap is garbage because of the shallow, untalented hacks you see on MTV is just as justified as somebody saying rock music is crap because they hate Fallout Boy and Blink 182.
i highly advise you to look below the radar. looking at rap through the mainstream won't get you far. listen to Saul Williams. his music is very odd, complex, and to an extent, experimental. and his lyrics are written in a very poetic form and he talks about mainstream america, race and how modern rappers have degraded the black community, poverty, and all sorts of subjects. one of my favorite lyrics of his is this:
"Now here's a little
message for you.
All you baller playa's got
some insecurities too, that you could cover up, bling it up, cash in
and ching ching it up, hope no
one will bring it up, lock it down and string it up.
Or you can share your essence with us, 'cause everything about you couldn't be rugged
and ruff.
And even though you tote a
glock and you're hot on the
streets, if you dare to share your heart, we'll nod our heart to
its beat.
And you should do that, if nothing else, to prove
that a player like you could keep it honest and true. Don't mean to call your bluff but
motha****a that's what I do.
You got platinum chain
then, son, I'm probably talking to you.
And you can call your gang, your posse and the rest of your crew.
And while you're at it get them addicts and the indigent too. I plan to have a whole army
by the time that I'm through to load their guns with songs they haven't sung."
but yeah, try not to generalize. that genre is ripe with amazing music, new and old. but none of it's gonna be on TV a lot, if at all.

Fall Out Boy - Dance, Dance or Sugar We're Going Down
The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright
Blink 182 - Damnit
Green Day - Brain Stew, St. Jimmy, Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Or if you want to be a little less mainstream play some lesser known Pop Punk/Power Pop. But Pop Punk/Power Pop will always be a hit with the kids.
