can anybody suggest rock bands with heavy classical influences? (classical, not classic rock)

A lot of 70's prog. Actually a lot of prog in general, but I know more about the 70's scene than any other time period in the genre. ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, the basics. Try to the prog thread for more in-depth suggestions.

thanks, any bands that you'd personally suggest?

i put it in here because i figured any type of rock can have classical influence (yes, it makes sense that prog would have a lot of it)

i guess i'm getting bored of the same type of stuff that's coming out so i've reverted to listening to classical. i was hoping there might be all different types of rock with different classical influences.

thanks for the help though

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer are a personal favorite of mine. Keyboard/piano/organ/synth are the dominant instruments and Emerson is amazing at it (Greg Lake plays bass and Carl Palmer plays drums, both are very talented as well) ,he draws a lot of influence from classical composers and works. Check out Tarkus (the song and the album) for one of the best prog efforts ever, IMO.

Symphony X would be a good one, Emperor would be another.

Metal counts as rock, shh.

Yea, I can agree with that. Symphony X is crap.
Please elaborate. You can say you don't like their music, but making a bold statement as to saying they are crap...that is treading a different ground. Why do you say that? I think that are amazing.

EDIT: saw you "epic" post but that didn't do that statement justice.

Opinions should have logical explanations behind them. Saying they are crap because their is a form of epicness to a song doesn't seem to make sense.

Ok, if you REALLY want a band with serious classical influence I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Yngwie Malmsteen. Listen to the album "Rising Force" specifically songs like "Black Star, Far Beyond the Sun, or Evil Eye."

Seriously Im a seasoned classical guitarist and know very well when I hear classical influenced material that's worth listening to and it doesnt really get better than this album.
Richie Blackmore did some classical guitar in his guitar work as well.

This is so far off base.

09-10-2006, 11:12 PM
I agree there, the point is, this thread isn't about you not liking Symphony X and trying to convert everybody to your opinion, it's about recommending classically influenced bands.

Kage
09-10-2006, 11:14 PM
Right, debate on an online forum shouldn't happen. And I'm not trying to convert anyone to my opinion, so stop being a complete idiot.

i am the robots
09-10-2006, 11:16 PM
So I'm being a complete idiot by telling you off for derailing a thread and being a dick?

I'm sorry, but saying, "BAND A SUX BECUZ I DONT LIEK HOW THEY TRY TO BEZ EPIC!!!" isn't debating.

Back to topic, the solo in Stand Ablaze by In Flames is very classically influenced, quite epic too.

Kage
09-10-2006, 11:18 PM
No, you're being a complete idiot for calling me a little girl when you're clearly the one acting like one with your exaggerated quotations of what I supposedly said.

What I said was that Symphony X's music is too self-concious of what it is trying to be to come off as being an organic creation.

And I happen to think discussion should flow of its own volition and just allow it to go where it will. It's much mor einteresting that way. Who cares if it's off topic?

i am the robots
09-10-2006, 11:21 PM
The exaggerated quotation and calling you a little girl are merely ways to get my point accross: nobody cares if you don't like Symphony X, it was just a suggestion, let the TS choose for himself, all this is going to end in is getting a thread closed.

With that said, Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery is another really classically influenced album.

Bfhurricane
09-10-2006, 11:25 PM
You people are being ridiculous just stop arguing.

Again, I will say, there is no better fusion of rock and classical than Yngwie Malmsteen. There's some good Black Metal bands out there that are classically influenced a tad bit, Dimmu Borgir is a good one.

Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and Yngwie Malmsteen all have classically influenced solos

Kage
09-10-2006, 11:27 PM
 You can't argue these days without people getting all upset. Everything has to be politcally correct.

i am the robots
09-10-2006, 11:34 PM
It has nothing to do with political correctness, it has to do with civil discussion, arguing is childish idiocy, gtfo if you're gonna be a brat.

Kage
09-10-2006, 11:37 PM
Arguing doesn't really have the connotation of being childish idiocy, but so your feelings don't get hurt, I'll use the nicer word of "debate." And, also, the way I see it, you're the one who started the childish idiocy with your outbursts.

Well no, but you're obviously provoking Eleventeen some how, remember an argument is always double sided.

I agree completely, so why is Eleventeen reporting me? He was right there with me the whole time, and acted like he didn't have anything to do with it because he didn't have a valid response to what I was saying, so all of a sudden he started saying the thread was going off topic and that I was being childish.

Rennaissance, if they haven't been mentioned. There isn't all that much classically influenced "rock" music; rock tends to be alot more based in the blues and, to a lesser extent, jazz.

As far as great heavy bands with a pronounced classical influence:
After Forever (esp. the "Decipher" album)
Haggard
Therion
Nightwish
Arcturus
Winds
Solefade

okay, to set a few things straight.

first of all, i'll look into Symphony X, and see what i think.

I've listened to some of Yngwie Malmsteen's stuff... Tokyo Flight, Arpeggios, Somewhere over the Rainbow, etc. Are there any particular songs i should check out?

I listen to ELP - and I love the classical influence. That's more what i was looking for I suppose (rock based). I like metal concerts and listening to metal for short periods of time, but i can't really get into it musically. (probably because i'm big on vocal lines and less xcore kind of stuff)

I'm going to try to look into all of the suggestions, but considering i'm at college and Temple has ridiculous firewalls, i'm going to have to save some of them until I get home (i'm going to try to look for some on a temple music base - 2million+ songs)

in short, i'll get back to you guys, but thanks for the suggestions.

try to stop whining about other people - that's not the point of the thread. if you want to discuss metal, there are other threads for that. if you want to suggest or defend metal groups with classical influences, i'm all for that and appreciate it.

Rock is a blues-based genre. You're going to find that there's a lot more classical influence in shred and metal.

Check out the Metallica intro solo to 'Nothing Else Matters'; I like to play that one on my classical guitar.
Also, 'Diary of a Madman' by Ozzy (Randy Rhoads) is a great rip off a classical study, by a guy who's name I can't remember right now. Gotta love Period 1 Computer class.
Yngwie Malmsteen is great, as well as Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, and John Petrucci (Dream Theater). Look up G3.

EDIT: And of course DragonForce. Their concert was sick.

I know that rock is blues based, but i'm sure there are bands out there incorporating classical piano, guitar, etc in their music.

Well, if you're big on vocal melodies, you'll love Nightwish, because that is pretty much the focus for them. Their lead singer (was) a classically trained lyric soprano, and she has a beautiful voice. Although there are some male growls in After Forever, the lead vocal duties fall on Floor Jansen, also a classically trained soprano, although she tends to switch back and forth between operatic and power/rock voices. She's also probably one of the best vocalists in rock/metal.

Symphony X vocals are power metal - think Iron Maiden, Priest, Dio, etc.

Therion's vocals past the Theli album have, for the most part, been made up of choirs with an ocassional soloist. Very unique sound, though...definitely worth checking out!

Arcturus are pretty out there, but there's alot of classical influence in Sverd's piano playing. You'll probably dig "Star Crossed" and "Ad Astra."

and i remember hearing nightwish at some point in junior high - the girl is a very talented singer.

What other prog are you into? Because that's where you'll find most of the classical influence in rock.
