Quick Q for anyone to answer.
Im learning about CODECs/ different types and how they are used (A/V) in different ways. I understand that (for ex.) .WMA files are used in CD-ROM, and MPEGs (of all types 1, 2, 3, 4) are used for video.
My question is in terms of internet streaming. I was trying to find a CODEC that would be a good example. I was trying to find something and the only thing I could come up with was Quicktime.
I was wondering if this is a good source or should I be looking elsewhere?
Thanks in advance to anyone. I just need a push in the right direction. All of this is somewhat new to me.

Well quicktime doesn't have it's own codec, a .mov file has tracks for different kind of media and it uses the correct codec to decode them when playing. So that way a .mov file could make use of mp3, jpeg, dvix etc. but it doesn't actually have it's own codec. Obviously quicktime can use those codecs for their individual filetypes without using the .mov container, so you can use it to stream mp3s and stuff.
Are you looking for an example of a codec that is good for streaming media over the internet, because none of them are really specifically for that purpose, unless you count stuff like voice codecs, which would be optimized (low bitrate) for sending audio through the internet. Whatever codec sites like youtube/google video use would come under that too.
Hope I understood what you were meaning.

I'm very positive the most used as well are the .ogg files format.
Google that.
EDIT: oh

Well my task was to find a specific CODEC used for internet streaming. I suppose I confused an example with a program, then.
Like I said, Im kind of new to everything so Im just trying to go with it all. :$
Thanks Chad and Tojes

The codec is surgically implanted in Snake's ear. It uses tiny vibrations, which cause his earbones to pick up signals from Otacon and other ppl.

the codec can be very useful in situations like when your fighting that jerk in the river in mgs3, and you never understood how to use the fake death pill, and you just think it kills you, but then you use the codec, and he tells you how to, and then you can progress in life down a river
