View Full Version : Battle of The Bands. Round 0.5 (Rock)

Alright, so we've classified the following bands as falling into the Rock Genre.

This isn't a voting thread, I just want to establish some ground rules for the voting and to see if everyone is happy with where we've placed them.

If you think you belong in rock, or if you don't belong there give us a chance to look over it.

I want it in the following manner or else I won't even look.

Band Name: The Beatles
Genre we've placed you in: Rock
Reasons you should(n't) be in this genre: If you take a look at our album, youll notice that we have a large focus on Pop.

Alright, so with the majoritie of people falling under Rock here is the list of bands. Please also make sure we have the right song.

Band - Song

Royal Flush - Violent Swine Live
Touchy Subjects - Jaded House Blues
Velvet Goldmine - Bassline
The Dave Green Project - Icarus
Chambered Soul - Tyrant
Lunacy in One - 3/4
The King of Spain - Lost our Spark
Pikkel Pharm Chronicles - Claxton’s Fractions
Change of State - Mistakes
Labrava - Panic Attack
NDX - Big Sky
Madagom - Don’t Cry Mr. Frenchman
Tepis - Laugh Alone
Jackson Square - Electrosonic
Impulse - Triumph
Datura Sound- Please specify a song
Deformatives - Inferno
Amorous Cactus - Truffle
Here From Nowhere - Fatal Serenity

Alright.

Voting Rules

1. All entries are final, so this is your chance to let me know if we made a mistake. Please use the above mentioned method or risk not getting noticed.

2. As always Copying another bands song is not tolerated - to the slightest. If we find out you stole the song, you'll be disqualified.

3. The song that you choose in this contest is going to be the song that we will use for every round, so keep that in mind.

4. This is the 1st thread in this competition. This is to make sure we got you in the right genre, and there will be a pre-determined amount of voting threads. As always, spam in these topics isn't cool and I will be upset with you. :thumb:

5. This is a voting thread, so don't vote here. I just want to know if we got it right.

6. We have implemented a 100+ post voting rule. If you don't have 100+ posts, you are not permitted to vote. This is too block asshats who create 10 accounts just to vote for themselves. If you don't have 100+ posts and would like to vote, you may do so, but I am going to make it an open poll so I will be able to see who voted. Expect your vote to not be counted.

I've also got Justin abord and he is prepared to do I.P checks of those who looks suspicious.

7. No voting for yourself - do it, and get disqualified.

8. The first voting thread will be made as soon as possible. Once I have confirmation of everyone, then I'll get started. You all have 3 days to let me know; don't let me know and your eliminated.

About extensions...

- If there is ever an extension, Jesse or I will decide until when.

- Voting threads will stay open for 2-3 days, and may be extended if poor voting has ensued. The next thread will be made shortly after.

Those are the rules, my fellow bassists. If you need to reach me, my IM's are in my profile, or you can post here; I'm on at least once a day.

I think later we should be able to change the song, because if this was a real battle of the bands, each round we could play a different song.

Maybe you should split rock up into multiple voting threads, as there are so many bands. People won't to listen to all the bands before they vote if there are 19 choices.

Wow, great turn-out

Noted.

They'll vote for the one they like, and the number will decrease alot each round.

EDIT: So, since I just realized that a thread can have a maximum of 10 poll options, I'll be splitting Rock up into 2 groups. One of 10, the other of 9.

5. This is a voting thread, so don't vote here. I just want to know if we got it right.

I am not doing this to be pedantic or an "asshat" (love that word), but you might want to change that to "This is not a voting thread" just to avoid confusion. :thumb:

unless this is a voting thread? I'm a bit confused myself to be honest

I thought you were going to put me under rock, not that I agree with that classification.

Edit:
So yeah, I think it would make sense to post all the genres with the bands that have been classified under them all at once. That way we know what the choices are and can see if we're in the most accurate catagory.

I realize that most bands there probably isn't much question about it, but for some it's probably not that clear.

what are the other genre's that you grouped the bands by? i just want to see what the other options to group my band would be.

Due to limited numbers in other genres, similar ones were placed together, even if not technically of the same genre.

There is the Funk/Ska/Jam Band group, a Punk group, a Metal group, and an Indie/Pop group.

Unless Dave changed it.

And apparently a Rock group :)

Ok, that sounds good. I'll assume I'm in Funk/Ska/Jam Band...

I think it's fine, but if it's possible, I would like for Velvet Goldmine to be placed in the Jam Band/Ska category.

Band Name: Velvet Goldmine
Genre we've placed you in: Rock
Reasons you should(n't) be in this genre: In the song submitted, we have the ska section, and there is a lot of the song that is improvised.

Okay, so I've been busy latley with school, work and a girlfriend, but I'll start working out the concerns that you have all adressed. As much as you think it would be smooth running it with two people, Jesse and myself are both very busy, but we should have the first actual voting round up within the next few days. It'll be easy sailing after that.

Thanks for the patience, guys.

Band Name: Tepis
Genre we've placed you in: Rock
Reasons you should(n't) be in this genre: If you take a look at our selection of songs, youll notice that we have a large focus on expiremtental instead of rock, but if were allowed to have mutiple songs, MindFunk would best fit in rock. But laugh alone deffenitly should be placed in an expiremental genre

Why is any of this necessary? Real battle of the bands aren't organized into genres. You are making this way too complicated of a process, just make some public voting threads.

Band Name: Jackson Square
Genre weve placed you in: Rock
reasons you should(n)t be in this genre?: We feel more like a blues/jazz/jam band when we play, and thats the style we aim for. If there is any kind of Jam or Alternative or whatever, we would feel much more comfertable.

there is no experimental category. if there was, every band with a delay pedal and odd time sig would want to be in it.

Seriously. "Experimental" is a pretty pretentious label to give your band.

Requests:
1.Jackson Square: I'm sorry, but we're trying to fit them into an over all sound, and you simply don't resemble the other bands in the Funk/Ska/Jam section.
2.Velvet Goldmine: I believe that you're right, you would belong in the other section, I'll tell Dave to switch you over.
3.Tepis:You simply aren't experimental. Believe me, you're far from it, but upon reviewing your song, I have decided you fit into a different section.
4.Datura: There's no other place to put you, sorry.
You guys are from Calgary?!

well i'd still consider bands like Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Can, etc experimental. also Glenn Branca. weird stuff, he's got.

but yeah, 99.9999% of the time, experimental is a stupid thing to call yourself. it just makes you like like a pretentious pseudo-artsy guy. no offense to anyone. most people don't have experimental bands. everyone wishes they do.

because if your band was, say, punk and you were without a doubt an awesome band. then the voting comes along. let's just say there were maybe 2 punk fans here and 70 metalheads. suddenly, your bands, which we'll just say for the sake of the example is amazing, ends up in last place, even under the worst metal bands, because the metalheads still liked the bad metal bands better than yours.

see at the end of this, if you are punk you will be competing against other punk bands and we'll find out who the best punk band is.

then afterwards, the best punk bands, indie/pop bands, metal bands, rock bands, and jam/funk/ska bands will compete to see who the best is, all together.

so everyone will get a chance to see how they do against their own genres, and then also we'll see the best overall.
