so i am looking for a bass, one that recreates or has created jacos tone the best, i am looking into fender mostly but other brand suggestions would be appreciated. anyways i know how to get jacos tone i am just wondering if getting an authentic vintage 1964 jazz bass would be the best way?

They made a Fender Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz bass if you have 3,039$ to burn, but that's in USD. That's like 3,376CAD.

Wow... I'll say the mandatory:

As much as I want to suck Jaco's dick at the moment, why do you want HIS exact tone. I mean, yeah, If you want something similar, yeah, go for Fender Jazz fretless made in america with Acoustic amps and lots of mids, but what is the point of it?

Even there, you need to have the feel of Jaco. You CANNOT instantly sound exactly like Jaco even if you copy his gear, why? Because he has a feel, hell, everybody has a different feel.

And even if you have a similar, why don't you just get your own tone? It's cool and all that you admire my favorite bass player ever (Hell, I'm hearing "Three views of a secret" at the moment... magnificent song), but be authentic!

well for one, i'm not going to be able to get the pure Jaco tone, no matter what i do, for one i am not the man himself, and 2 i dont want an acoustic 360, but i want something that comes close, i mean i dont want to be him i want to be me. i just love that tone so much, i want to sound something like that while i play my own stuff.

Lighten. The ****. Up.

Who says he wants to be Jaco? Who says he plays like Jaco? Who says he even likes the music Jaco played? Just because he likes the tone doesn't mean he likes everything else. I, for one, am ****ing obsessed with Justin Chancellor's studio tones. I want a bass rig that can almost mirror Justin's tones, because that's what fits my music. I'm not going to play exactly like Justin does - hell, don't even know if I'm going to play with a pick at all - but I want to take that sound and apply it within the context of my own music. So stop telling people they can't have someone else's tone. What's the difference between saying "I want Jaco's exact tone" and "I want this exact tone I hear in my head?" The only difference is that in the former example other people are likely to understand what you mean better. That's all.

You can't get anyone else's tone no matter what gear you have. Tone's all in the fingers. Besides, Jaco's tone gets mighty boring after a couple hours. I mean its smooth and groovy, but his overall tone is not most versitile tone out there. And as a piece of advice for you Mr. ThreadStarter, since you're neither Jaco, taco, nor sucking his dIc k, the best pieces of equipment are the ones that are most versitle.

In other words, just get a freaking Warwick and join the club already.

and to the point of my thread aside from the rantings of the past few people, what would be my best option in a guitar vintage fender? or something that recreates just as well? maybe like an MIA or MIJ jazz with lindy frailin pickups put in it?

Ugh, yuck. I hate Sheehan's tone. Its so...midrangey.

Well whatever. So you've proved me wrong. Ok now, lets all start careers on trying to play and sound exactly like someone else.

Great choice. :thumb:

Sorry bout the rant earlier. I was kinda in a bad mood. If you insist on a vintage jazz tone then by all means, get a 60's or 70's jazz. I've tried a real, non-reissue 70's jazz, and me and everyone else around me kinda had one great, big, long, thick, vintage 70's orgasm. Even the stingrays were having a good time.

Seriously though, any vintage jazz will satisfy your pink fantasy. :thumb:

Isn't that the one with the fake paint chips, and dings and crap? Seemed pretty corny to me.
