I tried sitting down and learning pot today and it was very overwhelming. Can you guys reccomend other songs I should learn first to improve my technique before I tackle jaco? :upset:
Maybe try some other Jaco stuff first and just slow it down.
Donna Lee would be a good place to start.
Also just work on scales and transposing them around the neck.

Work on playing harmonics. Learn tidbits of Amazing Grace by Wooten and start learning harmonic locations on the bass and become comfortable playing them.
You really need to just sit down and work really hard at it.

Download a device to slow the piece down. Don't just learn the song, take your time and analyze the notes, rhythms, and feel. Anybody can learn a song cold, but when you break it down to it's simplest elements you will not only just learn the song, but you'll get a lot more out of it. I did the same thing with teen town. Anybody could get around to playing it if they practiced enough, but if you break it down you'll think to yourself "wow that's a cool rhythem, i can apply that to another setting in the future."

Mastrrbasser could you suggest some freeware that would do that? I've gotten about 10 seconds in so far, its hard because I never heard the song before today besides this I havn't really heard anything else of jaco but I can see what the rave is all about now. I'm really having trouble with
\/ \/This chord any suggestions?
G|---[4]-----[5]-------------|
D|---[5]-[3]-----[4]-----[5]-
A|-3-------------[5]-[3]-----
E|----------------3----------

fret the third fret, and get in the position for the harmonics(use whatever fingering you'd like, i'm not going to argue fingering on this piece becuase there are options). use your thumb to pluck the third fret and use your index and ring finger to pluck the harmonics similtaniously. That's probably the most common type of shape in the melody of POT so get a grasp on that.
I use "the amazing slowdowner." I use the trial version because i dont' ahve forty bucks to register it at the moment. There is a trick to cheating the system though. The unregistered version lets you play the first two songs off a cd, so just burn a cd with two songs you want to learn, and do it that way.

you could download guitar pro and get the guitar pro tab for it and then slow it down on the program

meh, you could, but isn't guitar pro MIDI? the amazing slowdowner (and similar programs) slow the song down to fifty percent without altering the pitch. You can also eq it to make the bass more prominent in songs.

cool now I just need pot on a cd, I can literally feel my technique improving after learning ten seconds of the song, or maybe I'm losing it.

Don't inhale too much at once. You have to build up your lung capacity over time. Also, avoid large bongs and buckets and things like that - you won't be able to handle it.

I totally thought you meant Tool's "The Pot." I was going to bust out the guitar pro file i've been making of that song.

If you get the full version of Guitar Pro it uses MIDI still I think, but with RSE (Realistic Sound Engine), so it doesn't sound as crappy. That's what I'd use, providing there's a good tab of it out there.

Download Audacity. It lets you slow down the song without changing pitch, and is free. Also windows media player lets you slow down songs.

You probably learned it at one point. You just can't remember it.

this is not a song that can be learned in any amount of days, sure you could learn it, but to put your own feelings into it will take you a while. seriously its in free time, i take that as open to whatever you feel like, learn how to play the notes, and then learn how to play it

I think I had this argument with Quatre once, but it isn't in free time. If you mess with the rhythm too much, it just sounds bad. You're best off sticking to what Jaco played, and perhaps holding some long notes for a bit longer than he did. I almost get the impression that Jaco was a bit rushed when he recorded it, but maybe that's just me. Fantastic song and recording, nonetheless.
