View Full Version : Emperor

I just started listening to them. I must say i'm quite impressed. The production is good (unlike most BM production), the switch between growl and clean vocals works really well, and the guitar solos are really good. I might have to listen to more black metal.:) Any suggestions?
Which album by them?
They changed quite a bit, so different black metal bands will correspond to different albums by Emperor.
I'll wager a guess that it was Equilibrium XI?

It was Prometheus - The Discipline Of Fire and Demise

I'm actually intending on uploading IX Equilibrium for the Daily Upload in when metaloz's queue has died down a bit. Keep an eye out for it.
And apparently Ihsahn - The Adversary is similar to Prometheus. I've not heard Prometheus though, so I can't confirm this, but it may be something that you'd like to look into. And in case you didn't known, Ihsahn was a huge part of Emperor.

I haven't heard anything past Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk. In The Nightside Eclipse is my favorite.
For more Black Metal, check out the other staples; Darkthone, Mayhem, Immortal and Burzum. Nokturnal Mortum could also be of interest for something in the vein of early Emperor.

I'd highly reccomend Enslavement Of Beauty for Emperor fans.
It's quite symphonic and epic. Better production and awesome vocals.

Get In The Nightside Eclipse, it's my fav Emperor I've heard so far. Prometheus is an album I'll probably get this week. Emperor has grown on me a whole lot, they're now probably my favorite band and I have the album cover of ITNE in my My Spaxce Baxkground. Wordless Chamber and Empty, songs from Prometheus are still good songs by Emperor, but i'd like to pick up Anthems to The Welkin at Dusk, Loss and Curse of Reverence is a very good song and video.

I'm a huge Emperor fan but that video is lame as hell!! I'm trying to think of what is worse: Ihsahn dressing up like a knight, or Ihsahn dressing up like a Sith Lord.
Anyways, I'd check out some earlier Emperor before really deciding whether you want to move on to other black metal bands. "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" is a classic, as is "In the Nightside Eclipse," but they're very different from Prometheus.
Another band you might want to check out is Naglfar. Their album "Sheol" is quite awesome, and they've kept a pretty solid career going for quite a while.

I don't think it's as bad as Empty though. Upside down flying hospital beds do NOT translate well.

The one song I heard by Naglfar (I Am Vengeance) was great.
On topic tho, I'm listening to Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk right now, it's so great. It's fun doing homework with it in the background. I can't decide what song is the best yet.
My favourite Emperor song of all time is definitely "I Am The Black Wizards".

My favorite Emperor is "As The Shadows Rise" EP from '94. My favorite album by them is "In The Nightside Eclipse". The vocals on the EP are great.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of them, but I like them way more than most of the bands that they inspired.

Listening to Storm of the Light's Bane now. Although it has stupid black metal fuzzy production, it's pretty good so far. It seems like the progression in the first track has been used by every black metal band ever, though.
Night's Blood is cool...the riffs are actually pretty interesting.
lol @ "Chaosophy," though.
Now I'm listening to Dark Medieval Times...I don't like this nearly as much. :( The production is too bad and it doesn't seem to have the redeeming melodic qualities of Dissection. The first acoustic thing was ok I guess but it sounded like the guitarist could barely play it.

Never liked Satyricon. Always thought they were like third rate.
As far as Dissection goes, the Somberlain is way better.
Emperor is one of the few bands who make music I consider timeless or art.
Every album is majestic but completely different. It is so rare to find bands like this that just don't water down everything or sell out completely (Eg Satyricon).
Oh and Nemesis Divina is a classic. Obviously Mother North is the highpoint here but how about Forkeshet or Transcendental Requiem of Slaves, you guys don't like that?
Again, Satyricon is like Emperor, every album is different.
And.. Det_Nosnip, DMT is a marvelous album. You just have to be used to black metal. I'd say give it another year of adjusting your ears to BM production. Than pickup the Shadowthrone once you can enjoy the muddled production of DMT.
