Hey everyone, I'm a drummer and recently started listening to metal. I'm into classic rock, modern rock, hiphop, funk, and drum and bass. I've heard metal before, but to me it just sounded like a blend of power chords and cymbals and double bass. Not really musical..., I was with the whole "metal isn't music" crowd.
Then my friend introduced me to Lamb of God. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I don't listen to lyrics, but the guitar riffs and drum beats are just PHENOMANAL. not to mention the amazing arrangement.
I have some slipknot songs (just to listen to drums) and I really don't like it except for the drums. Sounds like what I mentioned in the beginning.
So I was wonder, members of the Metal forum, what other bands sound like Lamb of God? What other bands have those hot slow beats, that talent, and that same sound? I don't like the metal bands that just play a beat at 250bpm and the guitar basically solos for a couple minutes, with screaming the background. I want to hear creativity and these sick riffs.
My friend said that the band In Flames is similar, I'll have to check that out. Any others?

Um... Slayer always has good drumming.
Slayer aren't very similar to LoG though.

This would be better in the recommendations thread, but I'll give you a few. Shadows Fall, Unearth, Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Mastodon, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity. That should start you off.
Testament \m/
DV really nailed it, for me at least.

their riffs are very thrash-influenced. Just listen to thrash, basically. Slayer, Kreator, Anthrax and stuff like that.

I 110% back up your supporting of posting Slayer at having good drumming.

No problem, you might also want to check out the review site (www.sputnikmusic.com/metal) and check out some of the bands I listed for a feel of their sound, and also feel free to ask for recommendations there too.

Start with Thrash. Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus and Megadeth are the ones to go for first.

I'd say In Flames is the best band that has been mentione in this thread. The ones Jono (above me) said were good too.

Metallica - Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice for All
Testament - The Legacy, The New Order
Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?, Rust in Peace
Slayer - Show no Mercy, Reign in Blood, South of Heaven
Death - Spiritual Healing, Individual Though Patterns, Leprosy
Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind
BLACK SABBATH - BLACK SABBATH, PARANOID
You can't not start out with Sabbath, that's skipping the first step. The rest are just some really good metal records.

marylin manson's song should be the first step...
Hrm.. I'd suggest power metal/folk metal, I guess, since there're some fantastic drummers in that genre.
Check out bands like Dragonforce, Galloglass and Amon Amarth.

Dragonforce is retarded.
Now, Amon Amarth is epic and has put forth the best album this year.
NP Amon Amarth- Avenger
Sup Jason? How's it going?

I'd suggest melodic stuff to you first, i wouldnt suggest you listen to trash straight away cause you might just be turned away. No doubt, trash's drumming and guitars are incredible, but there is almost virtually no melody.
but try in flames, dark tranquillity, killswitch engage etc...

Yep, go melodical: I'd recommend DragonForce and Children Of Bodom.
On the other hand, if you'd rather stick with good ol' thrash, stick with the 'Big 4 of Thrash': Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer.
(Yeah, I'm a fan of both 'Tellica and 'Deth. Let's just say that to me, they have an equal amount of pros and cons which means that I don't prefer one over the other in a general sense.)

Hmm it's not that good, just because it's new does not mean it's the best thing to have been written in the past 12 months, quite the opposite.
I still like it, obviously
Oh and Dragonforce is fun, simply brilliant.
I want to hear creativity and these sick riffs.
Lamb of God have really bland riffs but the amazing drumming compensates.
I would suggest to you bands like Hatesphere, Nevermore, Terror 2000, Hibria, Norther, Zyklon, In Flames, Gardenian
w/e, there are lots of bands you could get into if you looked around enough
Apocalyptic Raids

With the exception of Slayer, all the bands in the "big 4" have plently of melody.

What's wrong with Synchestra, it's one of the most well written albums I have ever heard
The Black Dahlia Murder
Gd idea, but they can get real boring after about 5 songs

TBDM are awesome. They don't get boring at all.

The music is great, but the same vocal delivery / switching get's predictable and tired...at least for me :(

Kill is briliant but maybe CC is not the best band to start out with when getting into metal. It scared the living daylights out of me when I first heard it (as did most Cannibal Corpse).

Hmm it needs to be played louder then.
Something like Colony by In Flames would be a respectable place to begin
I'm sure we could all blurt out suggestions all day so...yeah

Not really. It doesn't necessarily have to be good, but quite often it is. Lombardo, Hoglan, Benante, Menza, Samuelson etc..

You might wanna try Testament
also check out the band Death... they are a good technical metal band.
If you like music with a lot of polyrhythms and syncopation, check out Textures and Coprofago, both thrash/tech metal bands. If you want straight up weirdo time sigs and heavyness check out Meshuggah although they are harder to get into
then there is all the progressive rock stuff like Opeth, Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree that you would like if you like "intelligent" metal.

Yeah, it's not as over the top as Tech Death drumming or something.
