Discuss this legendary band. Their first two albums, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall are both considered to be among the greatest Doom Metal albums ever.

I can't choose for certain choose which is better, though at the moment Epicus is getting some serious playtime from me.

I totally dig both those albums. You and Freezing Moon talking about them got me curious about this band and I'm glad I decided to check them out. Personally, I think they're mandatory for any metalhead regaurdless if you like Doom Metal or not.

Good thread idea.

I haven't even checked it out. I've heard some good things about it.

The Wells of Souls is just one of the best songs ever, really. It's quite a shame that Nile used that riff, because I bet some people have only heard of them due to that

Candlemass is an excellent band. I wish their CDs were cheaper because I'd love to actually own them.

Candlemass > Nile.

Candlemass > Nile.
Truth.

Messiah left a few months ago, but it's okay now because he got replaced by Johan Langquist :D

Although apparently there is a chance Messiah will still sing on the new album or something (which will be a concept album btw).

Another new album? The self titled was only released fairly recently wasn't it? Late last year or something. I suppose time is getting on a bit though.

Either way, Candlemass are brilliant. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is an absolute classic.

There can never be enough Candlemass appreciation. I remember the last time I went a day without listening to Candlemass.... no actually I don't. It's never happeneded. Not since 1997 anyway.

I actually like the new one best.
The day and the night is one of the most emotional songs I have ever heard.

I have love for Bewitched and Solitude most from other albums though.

Candlemass ftw

Epicus Doomicus Metallicus > All other Candlemass

EDIT: Woah, I didn't know Johan was back!! I always liked him a lot more than Messiah.

I've only heard a little of the new album. Epicus and Nightfall though are both great albums.

I'm trying to find news of Johan coming back and I'm turning up nothing. Could you site your source?

I mean, it lists the line-up change on Metal Archives, but I can't find any other sources to corroborate this.

So because Messiah's not in the pictures, that is irrefutable proof that Johan has rejoined the band after a 19 year absence?

I've recently been geting into Candlemass. I love The Bells Of Acheron and Bewitched right now. The riff In ...Acheron is ****ing evil.

No, I didn't say that. There isn't a vocalist at all. If Johan was in the pictures then I'd say "see there he is". I was actually in agreement with you that I don't see anything anywhere supporting that Johan has joined the band. He was just a session musician on the first album wasn't he? Did he ever tour with them?

Hmm, Alex seems to be right, this seems to be pretty random.

This is all I could find and it doesn't mention any other vocalist:

CANDLEMASS frontman Messiah Marcolin contacted BLABBERMOUTH.NET on April 28, 2006 to reveal that he has parted ways with the group and that it's 100 percent definite that he will not return. "We could not agree on how to do the new album," he said, but would not further elaborate on his sudden exit.

In a subsequent posting on CANDLEMASS' web site (dated April 30), the band wrote, "Messiah's got a severe pre-recording psychosis at the moment, so folks, please calm down. The band is confident that he will sing on the [upcoming] album as planned."

Jondur

I'd be very surprised if Johann rejoined. He wasn't even a metal singer (in fact I know of only 1 other metal group he sang with).

My mistake.

Either way, this sounds a lot like the speculation that came up from all the Rage kiddies when Chris Cornell said he was doing another solo album.

So we've got from Blabbermouth that Messiah's not coming back. Okay. However I have yet to see any evidence that Johann is rejoining the band, and I have absolutely no reason to believe that he would anyway.

Anyways my dad likes Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, I haven't let him listen to Nightfall yet, I'm planning on burning it fo rhim. And I'm about to download their s/t.

Good to see you listening to more Slayer. I haven't listened to them in a few days actually, quite a rare thing.

Anyways I showed my Nightfall today while we were driving out to go eat, he plays a mean air guitar.

btw, was Solitude on the original Doom (maybe Doom 2) soundtrack (slightly altered)? I could swear I've heard that riff somewhere before.

Borrowed Nightfall and Ancient Dreams from a friend and love those two albums. They have some unbelievably sweet riffs and Messiah's singing is great (really like the speedy solos over the slower riffs in some songs). The guitar tone is also ****ing heavy as hell. I'm kinda skeptical about their s/t album, though black warf is a good song, i'm really hesitant to actually go out and buy it.
