Even if you've never heard of them, listen to the new album and check out Brann slay the drums. The whole thing is posted on their MySpace (www.myspace.com/mastodon). If you want an extreme chopfest song listen "Capillarian Crest" (unfortunately MySpace makes it so you have to listen straight through the CD and it's track 4). But still, the whole album is killer.

I love Mastodon. I don't like the new cd as much as Leviathan or Remission, but it's decent. Both their previous albums are near flawless.

"The Workhorse Chronicles" is a great dvd, too. Some great playing by Brann on there.

Mastodon is a completely killer band. They (along with Lamb of God) stole the show from Slayer when I saw them on Unholy Alliance this summer. You can tell by Brann's playing that he's insanely influenced by Nicko from Maiden. Great drummer, great band.

Mastodon is sweet. Such a "metal" band. The Drumming is good, a little busy to my liking but theres is a great amount of skill and it goes with the music well. My fav member is still the singer though. I love him just yelling.

*Brann's chops.

I saw them this past friday and they were mindblowing. Brann's even better live. And Blood Mountain is just as good as Remission and Leviathon, in my opinion. I think Brann's my favorite drummer at the moment.

The band sounds like a wall of sound to cover up the fact that they cant play tastefully

Well, actually, Mastodon is certainly the lesser evil when you're arguing whether metal has any taste whatsoever. Mastodon are extremely talented and don't sacrifice musicianship for crazy antics or any of the sort...they appeal to many a crowd.

talent does not equal taste....... all I heard the drummer play was tom fill after tom fill after tom fill then a heavy snare roll.

The growling/screaming/verbal diarherra aint so good either

Ah, I see, you just have poor taste, and an undeveloped ear. Thanks for clearing that up.

my concept of good taste does not equate to your concept of good taste.

Im posting my opinion. For you to say I have an underdeveloped ear because I dislike someone vomiting into a mic for a whole set its pure ignorance.

And for you to post "I think Mastodon sucks" (in so many words) in an "Any Mastodon fans?" thread is...what?

White Riot!
09-19-2006, 06:49 PM
its one single answer to the question from one MXDP user........Any mastodon fans? "No I think they sound like wank"

If you cant handle other peoples opinions and perceptions , just ignore my posts , however if you want to enter an intelligent and civil debate about it , im all for that.

otherwise it ends here , okay?

Wow, have you seen Mastodon live, because I sure have, and I can tell you, there is no "vomiting into the mic" as you like to call it.

I can definately see why some wouldn't like the band. It's not like a comment about someone having different tastes about a band like Mastodon is really unexpected. Atleast to me it's not. Hell, I love the band, and I could pick out a bunch of reasons why people would hate them. I enjoy them for the same reasons that some people may hate them.

It's nothing to get offended over, guys.

I'm not offended by his opinion, more by his retarded statement of this so called "vomiting into a mic".

Okay, example time.

Let's say you're really into Art. You go to galleries all the time, you love to look at art. Your favorites are the HUGE paintings, full of color and detail. One day, a new piece of art is added to the gallery. This piece of art is a couple scribbles on a piece of paper that you don't see a picture on. It's a tiny piece of paper, and the scribbles only cover about half of it. You look at it, and nothing comes to you. It's just scribbles.

But of course you're not going to enjoy it, because you're into the HUGE paintings, full of color and detail, remember? Your tastes/preferences differ from this piece, therefore you're not likely to enjoy this (barely arguably) less interesting/talent-filled/amazing/etc piece of art.

Now let's be honest. Mastodon's vocals are nothing special. You can't argue that point, can you?

Their vocals are one of the things that people will absolutely hate about them. You know that as well as I do. To expect everyone to find something in their vocals is just crazy.

Therefore, his opinion is valid and nothing to get offended by, no matter how he states his opinion.

Unless of course, he meant it literally, in which case, I want to see a video of it.

Yes, I'm not retarded, I understand the concepts of opinion and perception. But I, being my super literal self, don't exactly understand how Mastodon's vocals resemble even slightly someone vomiting into a mic, hence, I called him on it.

Vomiting = "Bleeeeh... Bleeeeh..."

Mastodon = "Blaaaaah Blaaaaahhh Blah Blaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh"

 I like the vocals personally, but come on. You can't tell me they're impossible to be perceived by someone who doesn't enjoy them as resembling vomit. :thumb:

The same way that a 13 year old boy hitting a high note might resemble him getting kicked square in his sack. Does it mean he literally has someone kick him in the sack when he hits those notes? No, they just sound similar.

Josiah
09-20-2006, 04:12 AM
Well I haven't heard somebody vomitting into a mic.

Though I expect it would sound about the same as those vocals. Hey, some people dig it.. that's cool.

But it's not like the guy is actually singing. There's no notes, melody, nothing that would register on a spectrum other then noise with semi perceivable changes in pitch.

Haha love the 13 yr old boy example! hahaha

Motleyguy

Actually, contrary to popular belief, he does do some singing. For example, the song Naked Burn from Leviathan.

Motleyguy people have different opinions mate, you dont have to contradict everyone one of them, anyway

about the band, i could stand the music and could listen to it, but the singing didnt mix with what i like to naturally listen to

Det_Nosnip

lol.

I love Mastodon's music, but the vocals don't thrill me. When it comes to harsh vocals, I'm more into low growls like Opeth and black metal screams. That sort of thing actually takes alot of work and talent to pull off, and many of those people can actually sing really well...when the guy from Mastodon sings, you can tell that he's shredding his chords almost as much as when he screams, and he's in key about as often as well. ;)

I don't mind them, I wish they'd take less of a metalcore/ hardcore style though, and the vocals are....ehh. I mainly listen to them for the drums.

Yeah, they are very low quality harsh vocals, goes with the genre though unfortunately.

Brann's drumming is quite fantastic, at times, when he's not being an overly mastubatory player.
