View Full Version : RIP Steve Irwin

Reports of the Australian wildlife television presenter Steve Irwin's death have long been either exaggerated or expected. On previous occasions, Irwin, known worldwide for his Discovery Channel programmes, was allegedly killed by a black mamba and a komodo dragon. This time, sadly, the reports were true - the barb from a stingray punching into his heart in what most experts regard as a freak accident.

Irwin, whose death has come at the age of 44, was no stranger to danger. He was born in Essendon, near Melbourne, Victoria, to Lyn and Bob Irwin, both naturalists, and for his sixth birthday received as a pet a 3.6m-long scrub python called Fred. The family moved north to Beerwah, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, and in 1970 bought the land for a small reptile park. It grew in size, went through various changes of name, was celebrated for its displays of crocodile feeding, and in 1990 became the Australia Zoo.

It is most likely that Irwin would have preferred to have been killed by a saltwater crocodile, his favourite creature, but he would, nevertheless, have relished telling an audience about the creature which killed him, the stingray, "with a 10-inch long serrated spine which flexes if it is frightened". Stainton was on the boat 1,200 miles off Port Douglas on the Great Barrier Reef where Irwin was attacked: "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said 'Crocs Rule.'"

Quite sad to be honest. Must have been a pretty shitty way to die, as well.

He definitely brought wildlife awareness to many people who wouldn't have know what a cloaca was otherwise. I'm going to college to be a wildlife biologist, probably because of the saturdays I spent watching "Crocodile Hunter". Very cool guy, I can only hope I can be that knowledgeable one day. :thumb:

The thing which is the most sad to me is that you would always hear him saying about how much his dad taught him about animals etc and now he can no longer pass that on to his own son :'(

I feel so sad for his family.

Kind of sucks that he wrestled crocodiles and poisonous snakes for all of his life, and then he gets killed by an animal that's usually harmless. But I guess you can only take so many chances in life, and he finally just worked down to his last one.

Man it is a huge deal. Imagine i don't know who overseas it would be. But he was an amazing guy and did amazing work. THere's this massive black cloud over here. No one can believe that theres a world where the crocodile hunter is dead. Its like shane warne being killed/retiring. Even if you didn't love him you just can't believe that its for real that he wont be there.
They have to get counselling in for so many schools, and every body sort of feels as though a distant family member has been knocked off. I work in a school and the children are not at all handelign it. Its weird feeling here in australia. Even the arseholes like myself who'd normally be poking fun at this sort of thing are still laughing but its really subdued. I mean the port arthur massacre was funnier as was micheal hutchence (and the thing is he is my absolute favourite local musician ever).

^ Any article interviewing his manager/crew who were with him. The footage of his death shows him pulling the barb out of his heart before dying, the cameraman switched it off by then.

At the moment there's only one copy of the tape, the original, and it is police custody for evidence in the coroner's inquest. After that his manager said the tape will be destroyed. It would be sad if it was leaked, because his family don't want it released to the public, so it shouldn't be as far as I'm concerned.

While I did watch a lot of his stuff I don't see how that changed the world, its just entertainment, vets save animals all the time big whoop, yeah he put money into conservation and nature, Like he's the first one? not quite

By definition, he did change the world, though either way what people are saying is that he should be given credit for trying to, and he made a sight more effort than most people do.

Remembering him as an ordinary bloke is a different thing to disregarding his achievements and efforts. He may want to remembered as an ordinary guy, but I think if people forgot everything he did, he would consider his life wasted.

He spent his money to help animals.
But all of you only stop to think about him now he's dead.
Come on when he was alive how often did you talk about him, once every 4 years maybe, even then you were taking the piss.

this would be a good point if you weren't trying to make it sound like it was less than it really was. he didn't just make a few donations, a big part of his revenue is being constantly poured into animal conservations.

Its just beacause its and unexpected celebrity death that its being talked about, he was a bloke who loved animals and was entertaining on tv, no more no less.
