View Full Version : Bass head choice, and help on dings?

Soon enough I've decided I'm going to have to get rid of my stock heads. Not the resos however quite yet, I don't feel like dishing out that kind of money, cause they are still fine. These are what I think my choices will be, I'm completely not sure about bass though so if anyone could offer a suggestion on that.
Snare: Coated Remo Reverse CS Dot
Toms: Clear Amb
Bass: Remo Powerstroke 3?
And now my question about dings, my heads have all these dings on them, what causes them. I'm not sure but could it have been my old wood tip sticks that the tips were chipped? Because I have recently switched to nylon.
Help is greatly apreciated.

Powerstroke 3 will do just fine :).
If your heads are clear , you are no doubt , always going to get dents in them from normal playing.
coated ftw!

Thanks, but the problem is my snare is dented too, not to mention I've worn a lot of the coating off. If anything I'm getting a new snare head soon.

Depends on power used during playing and head tension, but its normal.

Thanks for the responses, with the PS3, do they offer muffling like the EMAD? Because it seems as though that system is a good idea. I'm now beginning to think of Clear Emps, what is the sound difference between the Emp and the Amb, can the Emp tune lower than the Amb?

wait dont you have a rydeen? If you do get coated ambs over clear, the best head combo on it , the kick should be emad, or superkick 1

Lol, how'd you remember I have a Rydeen? I'm not sure what heads to get now, lol, I'm into playing more rock, more metal once I buy a double pedal, which would be the best for that style? If not that, what kinda of heads can tune lower? (My specs are 14'' snare, 10'' tom, 12'' tom, 14'' floor tom, 20'' bass)

I reccommend the ambs they are really versitle, get the coated ones for the batter.

Why coated, I don't think I really want a warmer sound, I want lower sounds on the toms with some attack (if thats even possible). I think I need a CS dot on my snare for sure, cause I got the kit at christmas and I've already worn a fair amount of the coating off.

I prefer the powerstroke 3's over EMAD's
But its preference... Just buy any of the three big names and you can't go wrong.
All are good choices

They probably all come out the same factory anyway... owned by some rich buisness man, with chinese immigrants doing is labour.
Also, what happens when the world runs out of oil, because drum heads are made of mylar which is plastic which is made out oil. Do we go back to calf/goat skin skins?

They got 2 trillion barrels of oil waiting to be proccessed in Colorado and Utah. I dont think well have to worry about running out of oil anytime soon. ^_^

you can tune one ply heads (ambs) lower than 2 ply heads (emps)
As for the bass, i really like the eq3.
as for the dings...they shouldn't happen...check your tom angles and your technique...i've had my current heads on for probly half a year and i dont have a single dent in them.

snare Evans Genera G2 coated
bass EMAD or EMAD2
toms Evans hydraulics or Evans EC2 (beacuse you have rydeen series)
I would suggest that you stay away from Remo.
I made the mistake to buy the pinstripes for my toms. Some years ago they were fine. Now the quality is not that good.
My first evans head was for my snare (Genera g2 coated), and I was amazed buy the sound.
Then it was the Emad for my bass drum. It was perfect.
From now on I will buy only evans heads.

The adjustable muffling is convenient. Personally, if I didn't change the muffling in my kick drum for a year, I wouldn't care. So if anything is THAT important, that you HAVE to change the muffling, you take off your BRAND NEW POWERSTROKE 3 and take that muffling out.
For toms, go either emps or ambs. The CS dot or evans power centre (i think) is great.

Thanks for your opinion but I don't see why you don't like Remo, just because you made the mistake of buying pinstripes? As far as I've heard hydraulics are absolutely terrible, why do you think they would suit my kit?.
I think I'll try the Remo Coated Reverse CS dot, clear ambs for the toms, and PS3 for the kick. I figure if I don't enjoy them, I'll give Evans a try. These are my first head replacements so I guess I'm trying to get it right the first time.
To enemytopublic: I'll try to get some pics up, but when I first posted kit pics, people said that my angles were fine, I have a teacher, and he has not yet said any thing about the way I have hit toms. I'll also try to get a pic of my old sticks with the chipped tips, cause I wonder if thats why I have dings. Whats weird about the dings are that on my snare, they aren't even in the area I play on. I used to be all over the snare, but now I'm more focused towards the centre. Maybe my family has been playing it when I'm not around:confused:
Thanks for all the responses so far:thumb:

ive had bad experiences with emads. they get destroyed real easy.
ps3s are pretty good heads though, and theyre pretty muffled themselves.

I think the emad mufflers are horrible..I never used them
I got a better sound off with a couple pillows inside it
Now since I got the Superkick and Regulator combo...no internal muffling, strait sex

I don't dent my heads, if you have overly angled drums that is the problem.

True doom, well beginner stock heads anyway, which could be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

Yup probably cause they are stock, but my toms are close to flat, and not at all facing each other. Thank you Yamaha tom mounts!
