I figured there's a decent amount of other threads about different bands going around, so I might as well make another one.
I first heard ATD-I a little while ago, and I haven't been able to stop getting new stuff of theirs. Songs like Enfilade, Shaking Hand Incision, Arc Arsenal, Napoleon Solo etc have opened up a whole new doorway of music tastes for me, and it's a damned shame they had to break up.

Vaya slays RiC in a big way. Maybe it's because I can only handle a handful of ATDi at a time...
And for the record, The Mars Volta rocks the hell out of ATDI, so I'm sorta glad they split/reformed/whatev.

In/Casino/Out and beyond they were a good band. Vaya being my favourite with Relationship of Command just behind it. Before it they were really amature, and sure, they've always had that almost amature artistic with raw emotion thing going on for them, but their first few efforts were terrible, IMO.
The Mars Volta do blow them out of the water though, i'm sorry, but it had to be mentioned, I wouldn't bring ATDI back if it meant losing TMV. Cedric and Omar have founds their real creative outlet as opposed to being stuck in their post-hardcore roots. The other members of the band I don't think really have that much going for them, as seen by Sparta, I suppose. I'm not a hardcore fan, as you can probably tell, but ATDI I have a soft spot for because of the other elements in their music.
Omar's guitar playing and especially Cedrics vocals have improved x100 being in a new band and doing what they really want to.
I love ATD-I, probably more than The Mars Volta.
Alot of people on these forums say ROC is over-rated, but I tend to disagree. The album sees the band sticking to their own style, but write in a way which is completely catchy and accessible. Pattern Against User, Enfilade and Invalid Litter Dept. are my favorites off that album.
But that's not to say that Vaya and In/Casino-Out aren't amazing too, it'd be very diffciult to seperate a clear favorite. Even though 198d is clearly their best song.

I don't get what everyone finds so good about Mars Volta. I don't like them, like even a little bit, but thats cause it just isn't my style whereas I've always liked a couple of bands along the lines of ATDI like AFI and Coheed and Cambria.

I like them because the style is something I've never heard before, or only really heard bits and pieces from, otherwise they're pretty original. The vocals have range and are often passionate, the guitar is usually crazy and energetic or melodic, the bass is often good, either melodic or groovy, and the drums are either spastic and full of energy or just plain good. Plus all of the bizzare sounds and jazz influence and the like... They're just going out there and trying to do things that havn't been done before as best they can, and I appreciate that. And most of their songs are energetic which is always a good thing, if not, they're melodic, if they don't have those things going for them they're probably **** songs but I don't think they have too many of those.
I understand why people don't like them, mind you. And I didn't at first, but Deloused sucked me in until I did. Part of me wishes that they'd have more structure to some of their songs and cut parts of them out, but at other times, I like the over-meandering song styles they often employ, basically, they take me on a journey. I can only see them getting better as a band, and maybe one day releasing a more accessable album that lots more people can enjoy... but until then, I'm happy with what they're doing.
ATDI are obviously more straightforward, which can be cool. Vaya ftw.

Yes! There's finally an ATD-I thread!
198d is such a great song, let alone Vaya being an amazing record. RoC is and always will be my favorite record by these guys. I tend to think that RoC is adrenaline in audio form, if you will.
Arcarsenal, Cosmonaut, 198d, Transatlantic Foe, Enfilade, and Rascauche. ftw.

i must say, by my taste, i like ATDI better than TMV. much better.
but even with a neutral standing-point, ATDI kind of had more going for them that TMV.
ATDI made 4 great EPs and 3 great LPs and with each they developed their simple-but-emotional style more and more. and also they were consistent with giving their fanbase great work over and over. except i guess the mainstream success of RoC pissed a few off.
TMV however have made people mad with arguabley pretentious tracks and big sections of abient noise. it's also arguable that their style has declined over time (Deloused and Tremulant satisfied the ATDI fans perfectly, then FTM kind of took a more mainstream direction and had less "rawness" and more production and salsa stuff, and now Amputechture has disapointed about 80% of the previous fans) so although i do like TMV, a lot, they're on a downhill slope. sure people liked this newest CD, but it disappointed the majority of their previous fans and judging by the activity from album-to-album, the next CD they release, whenever they do, may just be the one that does them in.

album: Acrobatic Tenement (or EP, El Gran Orgo)
my favorite moment is that video of them live on Conan Obrien. great energy, and you can hear them nice and clear too. and the end is funny when Omar tosses his Squire on the ground and hops over his amps and runs away, and then Cedric sees him do it and also hops over the amp. so it's like TMV jumping away immediately, and Sparta is just left on stage :p.

around the release of RoC they got mildly popular. rolling stone talked about them a lot and stuff. everything before that, though, was pretty much unheard of by the mainstream.

SDRE kinda fit in the same vein as "Acrobatic Tenement", and to an extent, "Hell Paso", and "El Gran Orgo". especially SDRE's post-Diary stuff.
and Jawbreaker's early stuff (like the song on there "Kiss the Bottle") is in the same vein as "El Gran Orgo", "Hell Paso", and "Alfaro Vive, Carajo!"
and plus, overall, fans of one of those bands generally like the others.

sr800bkBassist
09-09-2006, 09:55 PM
yeah, being that you say it was the production that was a big letdown, it'd bet it was Acrobatic Tenement that you heard. they used no distortion on the CD, used a busted up right-handed bass with dead strings, and Omar had to play it (he's a lefty) and they were all drunk and on drugs throughout the entire recording session. and most of Jim's guitar parts were done as scratch tracks but they used them as final tracks to save money since they were all still kids and had no cash. and most of Cedric's lyrics were just admittedly meaningless ad-libbing done on the spot. i personally love the feel of the album (it's my favorite), but it's definitely a love it or hate it album. i can see easily why people dislike it.
and by the way, 198d is an amazing track. one of their best, i think. i love it so much.

yeah, the reason i like it so much is because it's the most "pure" of their CDs i guess. like even though it was piled together, Cedric's performance on it is unbelievabley honest, raw, and emotional. and it's a lot more youthful than their others. and the clean tone guitars playing what would typically be heavily distorted also adds a couple element, entitrely subjective though.
also, not every song was completely ad-libbed by Cedric, just random parts of a lot of them. most of the choruses and the basis of the lyrics in their entirety were already written. it's just the random spots where it seems like Cedric is spouting out a bunch of randomness at once. so there's still meaning in the songs.

kind of. also, their later stuff has a big Drive Like Jehu influenced sound to it, but that first stuff is more "young" sounding, like not immature, but just really playful yet intense and emotional. kind of like Cap'n Jazz. except obviously with that signature feel that they've always kinda had. i guess i can't really describe it. but give it a few listens. you may not end up liking it, but even as my current favorite CD it took me a while to get into. at first i thought it was garbage but then i got addicted.

Overproduced or not, RoC is the album that got me into them and is still probably my favorite ATDI album.

Having clean production is never really a bad thing, but when a band thrives on being as lo-fi and messy as possible, it DOES seem kind of silly to brighten up the sound. I think that's why a lot of people prefer Surfer Rosa to Doolittle in terms of Pixies' albums, and the same can be said of ATDI.

you cut off the part where I explained UNLESS the bands like to be messy and lo-fi! that definitely applies to Jesus Lizard

Acrobatic Tenement > in/CASINO/OUT > Vaya > Relationship of Command
That said, RoC is still really good.
Didnt hear El Gran Orgo yet.

my two favorite ATDI songs:
-Skips on the Record
-Emptiness is a Mule
and has anyone seen Fugazi live videos from the early-mid 90's? it's amazing how much ATDI got from them. like Guy Picciotto's stage presence = Cedric Bixler, and also Ian Mckaye's big anti-moshing rants and even enforcement (giving drunk guys two warnings and then personally pulling them out of the crowd and shoving them out the back door with a refund that they put in an envelope before the even start touring for situations like that) are like Cedric x2. not to say ATDI just ripped them off 100%, but they definitely got a whole lot from Fugazi. and also, of course, the definite sound similarities.

Yeah, that whole "no moshing" thing really made me smile. I forgot the reason. Was it to not exclude women and smaller men? I think so. But yeah, I thought that was nice.

i believe that's a somewhat accurate quote from Cedric.

on that Big Day Out video, Cedric dedicates "Pattern Against User" to The Fall. and he says "if you dont know who Mark E. Smith is, then you listen to too much hip-hop and heavy metal."
ironically, Cedric would later do guest vocals on a heavy metal and hip-hop album (Mastodon and Handsome Boy Modeling School) !!

I love ATD-I, one of my favourite bands.
I thought their sound was very unique, especially for a genre that I've always thought was a bit narrow. Favourite album is probably ROC, but it's close. My favourite individual tune is probably "Rolodex Propaganda".

what genre are you referring to?
you should listen to Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Hot Cross, and The Holy Shroud if you like their later stuff. and Cap'n Jazz, One Last Wish, Boy's Life, Rites of Spring, and Braid if you like their earlier stuff.
sadly, the other bands within the same genre as ATDI usually outshine ATDI.
still love them of course. but the other bands offer so much more.

i read something about how Jim Ward's guitar parts were all recorded as practice tracks. they were planning to add more stuff or clean it up later but they ended up keeping it.
good idea, even if they didnt like the finished product
