View Full Version : Scamming best buy
Who's the Boss?
09-02-2006, 07:35 PM
I've been told that a friend of my brother had an xbox360 that stopped working so he bought a new one at best buy. After opening the package he replaced the new xbox360 with his broken one and promptly returned it. Apparantly after making a huge deal about it he got a refund even though store policy is that they can only offer an exchange for the same product.
Would that even be possible?
I ask because I'm thinking about buying a broken xbox360...

dude at best you turn a broken xbox and a working xbox into 2 working xboxes
It could be fraud, you could get fined/go to prison

Plus you could say you mistakenly thought you were using the xbox you just bought.

THis is how i'd do it:
/me buys broken xbox
/me goes to best buy
/me makes purchase
/me sneakily makes the switch
/me returns and demands a refund
/store manager tells me that they have a strict policy and that its opened so they can only give me a new xbox
/me throws a fit but eventually takes the new xbox
/me comes back 5 min later with reciept and new xbox demanding a refund
its fool proof

There is a reason you can only return it x-days after purchase, because, that is how long the information attributed to your reciept stays in their computers.

i say go for it
Nothing bad will happen. I once tried to do it with Guild Wars, and going to a different store to get another copy. Turns out that particular Wal-Mart never carried the game; all that happened was embarasment.

I think they usually open the new one for you at the store, thereby foiling your plans. That's what happened with Target and my brother's video game. Sorry.

Why didn't he just exchange the broken one...?

They'd check the serial numbers, find out you were trying to scam them, and call the police.
Bad idea!
I actually have a really hard time believing it worked for your brother's friend.. the serial number is probably the first thing they'd check.
Why didn't he just exchange the broken one...?
That's what I was thinking. If he had the money to buy a new Xbox 360, why even bother "scamming" them?

If you are that worried wouldn't it make sense to swap the stickers over?
Most stores don't even do that though, I know guys who modded ps2's and messed it up so they took it back to walmart and got another despite them being opened.

You're not going to be able to know the xbox is broken if you don't open it.
1) Why not just get two working XBoxes and sell one on ebay?
2) I'm sure the box or their inventory would have the serial numbers recorded, yeah.

All I know is if you call a fast food place and tell them that they misplaced food from your order and didn't have the courtesy to give you a receipt, they will give you food.
Just make sure you don't call a place that doesn't have a drive thru..man was that a mistake!

Because he didn't buy his at best buy to begin with?

I've never tried to remove one of those stickers, but I imagine they're made so they can't be removed in one piece.
I've worked in two different retail stores and serial numbers are the first thing we're supposed to check before doing anything. Maybe it's just something about Ohio. Apparantly nobody else checks. :p

It was still a pretty good point about the serial numbers, I never thought of that. Would they really call the police though?

He wants to buy a new XBox, take the new one out and keep it, put the broken XBox in the brand new box, return it, and get his money back. Meaning he just got a free XBox.
Easier said than done!
I don't think it's worth the effort.
You better also make sure the broken XBox is spotless. I don't think they'd accept the "brand new" XBox if it was scratched up already. Haha

Anytime you buy a console/handeld at Best Buy the serial numer is scanned aswell, I know this because I work at Best Buy.

And I'm sure you check the Serial Number for returns, right?
I work at fye, so I know the drill. The odds of it working are pretty much not there.

You can do that with gamestop easily, same principle just do it with used systems/games.
I've done it a few times. I feel kinda bad because I work there now, but that was before I worked there.

I work at fye, so I know the drill.
Just out of curiousity, how good is the pay there?

I have had to return many electronics items to bestbuy (Labtops, stereos, TV).
I wasn't trying to switch a broken product out for a new one or any other scam but I do know they never checked the serial number. They just check to make sure nothing is missing from the box and that the item doesnt have excessive wear and tear.
I also had to return my P2 and it was the same drill.

you must've not had much luck with bestbuy if you had to return loads of ****, why didn't you stop buying from them after a while?

so the scam is buying a broken xbox at discount and getting full money back for it?
edit:
ps. i bought video ipod and scratched it up in one day and returned it the next saying i opened it and it was like that, they gave a replacement with no hassle, didnt check serial numbers or nothin, then 2 weeks later the new one i got got a bit scratched up, i told them that it has a problem connecting with my itunes and that apple insisted i replace the product, they got a bit angry this time (was different people working) they knew I was up to something, but I started to get angry and said 'if your not going to give me a replacement, i want my money back, its within the time I can still get my money back for it' and eventually the guy got angry and just gave me a new one

i think the chances of it working when it first came out were alot higher, the longer its out, the more they learn the scams, etc, and the more they start becomming strict on it (the more you lose, the more you learn, right)
in the beginning (or if its newbies on the job) they will probably just scan the barcode on the box, not the actual console, and make sure everything is inside. If your nice about it, workers are a lot more lenient to giving you what you want also. If they arent cooperating, you THEN start getting angry.
Now after time, they probably learn the scams and check serial numbers so the scam working...probably not unless you talk to the rigth people on the job such as newbies or people that simply just dont give a ****

Look for the spotty, greasy, 16 year old working in bestbuy in short.
Or the really old ones who can't be arsed to check the numbers.

I have a friend who did this with a PSP. He won it from some guy in a poker game who thought he was pulling a fast one on my friend cause it was broken.
He bought a new PSP from Toys R Us, returned the broken one for store credit and used to credit to buy PSP games.
