Should hear Meshuggah's tuning from Stengah.
F# standard with the bottom string on E.
And that's an octave BELOW E :)

Actually, Iron Tusk is a step down on all the strings except for the lowest string, which is tuned to A

i may be being really naive, but what really is th epoint in tuning down so low, the guitar and bass in standard tuning fit together perfectly. like when you start tuning down what role is the bass playing- most of it's inaudible cos its so low.

because most death metal singer sing... äh... growls very deep...
imagine someone growling "grrrooooaawwrr" and the guitar is in e-standard
imagine someone growling "grrrooooaawwrr" and the guitar is in b-standard
what will sound better?
btw. it sound more "evil" and "dark" when the guitar is tuned low

Yeah, but with deep, it's better to tune your guitar up. If you listen to some Smiths songs, you'll see how it's applied.

I think some Soilwork tracks are in Drop B
They use B standard on 6 string, they might as well just get 7 strings.

It's Drop D: Down one and a half steps.
Just like 'Drop D', but lower on all strings.

Kataklysm use Drop D down 1.5 steps, which I assume you meant by drop B. I don't know, though, I could only find a couple tabs by them. Check out in Shadows and Dust. It's a pretty cool song and pretty easy.

You're crazy. Never try a 7 string song on a down/drop tuned 6 string, especially Dream Theater. It makes things funky on the upper strings.
