So what new show is anybody looking forward to this coming season? A lot of pilots have been leaked this season (probably to work up buzz on the internet) so I'm sure some of you have pretty well formed opinions.
First, for me, is Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I read the pilot a while back and, while it doesn't come close to the West Wing pilot, it's still Sorkin. Perry catches a lot of flack for Friends, but the character he played in a few episodes of the West Wing was memorable and he was great in that one episode of scrubs. Amanda Peat and the girl in the sketch trio are the weak links. Peat is a good fit, but her lack of TV experience worries me. The unknown element of the sketch trio could easily be outshone by DL and, to a lesser extent, Nate Courdry. I have to trust Sorkin's casting ability; proven time and time again in the past.
Then there's the Singles Table. It's a comedy with John Cho (Harold from Harold and Kumar and the fish guy from Kitchen Confidential) playing the lead and it has no laugh track. The pilot is about the singles table at a wedding and it was great. It'll be cancelled after 4 episodes and replaced with a hot wife dumb husband laugh track addled sitcom.
Last, for me, is Heroes. It's a mostly forgettable superhero drama save a Japanese guy who can stop time and/or teleport. The scenes where he discovers his power and his friend's reaction are funny and memorable. I think he's great because he is sort of dorky and akward and truely excited about his new powers. All of the other characters are so serious. The pilot mostly sets up the characters (a girl is invincible, a mother can switch bodies with her reflection [I think], a guy can fly. There were probably a few others, but as I said, it was mostly forgettable). I can't give it a thumbs up or down yet.
Does anyone have opinions on the other pilots:
Friday Night Lights - Based on the book and movie
Jericho
The Nine - Bank Robbery
Shark - Defense attorney becomes a prosecutor. By Spike Lee.
Traveler - from some X-Files writers
Runaway - Father framed for murder and family runs away
The Class - A 27-year-old is reunited with his childhood friends.
Our Thirties - Directed by the director of Sports Night and The Office. A friends clone.
Aquaman - Based on the Comic (but it wasn't picked up)
Knights of Prosperity - Idiot tries to rob Mick Jagger. Proof that "comedies" without laugh tracks aren't always better than those with.
Kidnapped
The Black Donnellys - Gritty crime drama
Vanished
Raines - Jeff Goldbloom can talk to ghosts.
