View Full Version : September Newsletter Signup/Submissions

We're a little behind the eight-ball here, but hopefully things can still work out.
I only have two submissions or so right now, so we need a lot more content if this is going to be done. I'd ideally like to get submissions by the 29th and 30th, and would appreciate submissions from a wide variety of users, regulars or not. The newsletter only works if lots of people contribute and we have a wide variety of writing styles, viewpoints, and genres to discuss, otherwise it has too narrow a focus or is boring to read. If you don't like the way the newsletter has gone so far please submit something to improve it. If you like what you've seen so far, contribute to keep it afloat and make it that much better. It's the only way this thing is going to work.
Here are some ideas of things you can write:
- band profile
- album blurb
- a list (with descriptors)
- opinion piece on anything related to sputnik or music
- concert review
- interviews with local/indepedent bands
- user tribute
- band comparison (ie: Jay Z v. Nas, Beatles v. Stones)
- musician profile (drummer for band x, producer for band y etc.)
Or anything else your mind can dream up. We welcome creative pieces, these are just some suggestions. You don't need to be a sputnik or forums regular to contribute, everyone is welcome. Length is 100-300 words or so, but there is no set limit. For an idea, check out the past editions.
If you reviewed a new release during the month of August, we would heavily appreciate if you could summarise your review into a paragraph-length blurb. See the July/August editions to get an idea.
If you are interested in submitting any pieces, please do so by emailing us at sputnik.newsletter@gmail.com by Aug 29th-30th or so. Please try to submit them as early as possible, it makes things easier on all of us.
If you are interested in signing up for the newsletter, just post your address in this thread, or send a request email to the above address.
This thread can also serve for questions, comments and suggestions. Design and layout tips, content suggestions, help writing articles... it can all be discussed here.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

Shhh I wasn't counting mod submissions. This way the plea will seem more urgent. :(

I've reviewed a couple of newer releases, Hellogoodbye (which I will blurb), Be Yout Own Pet (I'll ask my brother to do this) and Pharrell (which might be too not new, but I will do anyways).

Are you going to include me and Ian's Unearth blurbs?
I can write one up for the new Lamb of God, too.

Yep I'm including everything submitted so far, of course.
And that sounds great.

What about if we submit an album blurb for somethign that is being released in September thats been leaked? I know illegality and all that jazz, but it would be more timely etc. etc.
morrissey
08-26-2006, 06:21 PM
I don't think that would be a good idea, we don't want to encourage leaking/illegal downloading at all.
Shadows

I can understand that idea, but it's not like it's a complete heresy. Virtually everyone pirates music these days.

It's illegal though! :smash: Ultimately we want bands to know the site and then send their CD's early for reviewing. The labels won't want to do that if we allow stuff like that because it makes us look bad.
Or something.

Well, it seems to have gone down to manageable levels now that the music industry isn't breaking too many balls anymore, but meh, it's entirely understandable and probably correct to not encourage it.
I might send something anyways, if I stop writing reviews like a madman. 0 in 6 days, woot.

If I was gonna do a musician profile, should it be like a paragraph long, like blurb length?
morrissey
08-27-2006, 02:29 AM
You can do a paragraph-length one, or a more in-depth one of 3 paragraphs or so. It's really your choice and how detailed you want to get, but nothing longer than like 500-600 words. If you want to write something long, it would be better served as a Featured Artist on the forums or a muse if we ever get them back on Sputnik.

I thought I signed up for this back in June (I think) when it was started (I believe) but I haven't got any of them since the one in Junes (maybe.) So uh I'm resigning up!

Weird, you're already on the mailing list and there isn't any reason why you wouldn't have received the last few newsletter. I just sent you a test email, let me know if you get it.

I got that soo I'm not sure. I know I didn't get it and delete it on accident because... well this is my MX email so I just don't do that. Well I suppose its working now so all's well.
Thanks btw.

morrissey
08-30-2006, 09:16 PM
No I'll be sending it out on September 1st.
I need contributions like mad from people other than Kripes/Hep Kat/SF though. Variety, folks!
If anyone is interested in sending stuff out pleeeeeeeeease do it tonight. It'll only take like 15 minutes.

Lol, I've done a few haven't I? However, I can write a blurb on Head Automatica's "Popaganda" taking things from my review of it if you really do need a lot more material.

I can have something submitted my tommorow on Pharrell and possibly on Hellogoodbye but I really can't do it tonight.

Kripes it doesn't matter who the material is from it's just a matter of getting different genres in there. Your contribs are awesome but it's nice to get a variety of genres. Pulseczar, whatever you want to write I'd appreciate, blurb or article. Jungler, I can wait, but those would be great.

Sep and Innerdark, you guys are both already on the list and have been for a few months. Have you not received any yet? If not, there might be something wrong with my mailing system.
edit: also it would be super awesome if people could send some stuff in!

Oh so I see a reviewer face-off eh? Someone taking up my dual-review concept that I used on 'Show No Mercy' with Bron huh? It's ok, no need to thank me.
Cool newsletter btw.

I had like...at least a third of the contributions. :-\
The newsletter still rocked though. :D
Looks awesome as usual, AND IT's SO BIG.
Not that I'm complaining because I like big stuff, but pretty soon we're going to be spraining our scrolling fingers trying to read the whole thing :-*

I'm really sorry I couldn't do the blurbs morrissey. I was really exhausted after first day of school and the game of basketball I played after.
I'll try and submit some stuff for next month/halfmonth.

I thought that picture of Nick Lachey was dead sexy and entirely appropriate for this months rotm
Anyways, we need more band bio's in the future, so I'll try and write some up. Since I listen to every cd released ever, the sound offs are kind of uperfluous for me, so instead I think we should just have huge nude pix of jessica alba taking up their space.
Whose with me?
