View Full Version : Lower Back Problems?

I'm beginning to have some lower back problems.
I can't sit on my throne for more than 30 minutues, without my back starting to ache?
I'm rather worried, that eventually I'll become paralyzed or Imobile or something, or can't walk for long periods of times.
I tend to sloutch alot and this might be the cause, but is there anyway I can help it.
Would some Hamstrings or LowerBack stretches help?
Bonham#1!
08-23-2006, 07:24 PM
I'm sure stretches wouldn't hurt, and neither would sitting straight. But I'm no expert.

Yeah thanks though. ;).

Sloutching is most likely what has caused this, as that is my case. Make sure when you play you sit up straight, eventually it will become a habit. As for you back now, seeing a professional would be good to do...

Happens to me too.
Just remember when you pick up something heavy, don't bend and pick it up, squat and use the strength in your legs.
Also, arch your back, and when you sleep, make sure you sleep flat, not bent (taking away pillows in the upper body, or placing lumbar support pillows under you). Stretching may help too, but I'm not sure about that. Just make sure you don't bend too much.

I had the same problem. It got better by moving my set right up against a wall, so my back would hit the wall, thus making me sit straight up. It worked for me.

I also walk about 2 miles home everyday with a backpack, I doubt that's causing something, but maybe?
Thanks for all your help guys.

It might.
Yeah I moved my seat against the wall for a backrest. It works fine in that capacity, however my left elbow hits against the wall everytime I play two handed sixteenths on the hihat.
We_Love_Lime
08-23-2006, 07:32 PM
Yeah.
I guess I'll just get a seat with a backrest.
I don't really have a flat wall, my set is right infront of a window sill.

Sounds like a posture issue. Get a large mirror (or two) so you can watch your back while you play. Also video tape it and watch to see whats going on back there.

I can't forget you.
I can't belive they don't have a SuperHero called the Incredible Lime or just.. Lime.
I'm going to create one.
I already have a character. He looks like this:

I just have to give him superhero attributes.

He is.
He can't be deteted because he's a midget.
Yeah.
I guess I'll just get a seat with a backrest.
Lime, I dont think this will fix the issue.
If you are feeling pain in your back, particularly if its your lower back, it would suggest that youre leaning forward when you play. If you have excessively angled toms, Id suggest straightening them a little, or lowering the height at which you sit. By flattening toms, raising them and lowering your stool you may feel a little uncomfortable initially, but it will force you to sit up on your throne which will keep your back straight.
We_Love_Lime
08-23-2006, 09:09 PM
Yeah.
I don't have any toms, but thanks for telling me that a throne won't help it, because I was about to go buy one for 100some dollars or howmuch ever.
I can't adjust my throne height, to make it shorter, but maybe I could just raise a bunch of things.
Thanks.

I have major back problems (went for x-rays today finally, after 5+ years of problems), but not when I'm at my drums. I find that when I sit in a certain chair in my living room that's a bit too low to the ground, my lower back starts to hurt after a while. Maybe your throne is too low?
Sunshine
08-23-2006, 09:10 PM
OH OH I KNOW.
Tie a wooden board to your back when you play =D

Sunshine

^He really isn't.
My lower back is curved in more than most people, and starts hurting if I'm walking straight with good posture for hours and hours and hours on end [but it takes like all day, so it doesn't cause TOO much of a problem].
The doctor said that if I don't do a bunch of ab work outs to fix it, I'll have majormajor back problems when I'm older.

Slouching is bad, you've gotta have good posture when playing drums.
I just get bad backs because my matress is an utter piece of crap and I used to slouch a lot and I click my back a lot.
Oh and lifting a lot of heavy rubble and helping my grandparents move a few months ago really threw my back in the ****ter, ouch.

My learning just earned a "..stop banging up my car!" from my mom.
And she's way glad I wasn't driving the stick. You can't idle with a stick, I would've been going much faster and probably would've cost upwards of $600 in damages [3 for the headlight I would've cracked, and 3 for the bumper that would've crumpled like paper as Japanese car bumpers tend to do].

We have 2 cars [well, 3 now, but one of them I don't even touch so I don't consider it as "existing"] --- The 2000, automatic, white Honda Civic, and the 2001 black Honda Civic with the stick.
My mom has this really weird...order...that I have to do things in:
-Permit [done]
-ONLY ALLOWED TO DRIVE THE AUTOMATIC because it'll "screw me up on my driver's test" [which I took two weeks ago and passed]
-Must have license and be driving the auto 'til like January ['tha hell =/]
-Must be able to drive the stick in EVERY CONDITION IMAGINABLE [including starting it, going uphill in a monsoon..and snow..and so on] before I can have it
-Then, and only then, after I master the stick, am I allowed to learn to drive a motorcycle
Which blows, my dad would've bought me a motorcycle even before I had my permit. I waaant one.
