John Bonhams hihats. They are droning and tinny and annoying sounding when he plays closed.
Sweet Rides/ The most overated ride of all time. Sounds really mediocre in tone , has a weird stick definition , and to top it off hordes of blink 182 retards buy them.

Chris Adler's (Lamb Of God) got a random splash of some variety that sounds really quite nasty, it's especially noticable on the Modern Drummer 2006 DVD.

Well, I hate the fact that I thougth that the oriental china trash was my sound. I was influenced by how it was heard on the S&M album , and when a friend of mine bought it, it sounded like garbage.

i like sweet rides, but mainly for the bell and the crash, they do have a large bit of wash, but i like 'em.
i don't like wuhans, all the ones i've purchased sound terrible. i also don't like newer new beats, i don't know why, but i just really don't like 'em, i like vintage new beats, but i can't stand newer new beats. and i don't like Z Custom rides

Lol, what kind of hats do you have.
They are just crappy off-brand cymbals that came with my somewhat-crappy off-brand set. I actually like the sound of my bass drum and toms, but I can't ever get the sound I want. I don't have enough money to buy anymore cymbals, hence the reason I only have my original set of cymbals and only one crash. It sounds like I mounted a pot onto a metal rod and struck it. Plus, I just recently started playing on the set. Once I progress, I could maybe talk my mother into helping with funding for new heads and cymbals. :naughty:

I hate the crash that The Fray drummer uses. I dunno, I heard that song (over my head?) on the radio, and it just sounded so horrible when he started riding on it in the last chorus
I agree my sweet ride does have a lot of wash. I do like it a lot, but it just doesn't cut through the music. I think the sweet ride crash doesn't sound too hot either, but the bell is really nice. I'm thinking of maybe exchanging for a Ping Ride, but I don't know if I should yet.
Lower end Paiste's.....all of them
I dunno man. I have the lowest Paiste crash you can buy, and it sounds awesome. Even though its on a crappy stand and about a year old with stains all over it (reacted with cleaning fluid), it still sounds really nice. It's comparable to my Sabian AA crash. But that's just IMO

Yeah, and they were pretty cheap too, considering how expensive Paiste's usually are. I was surprised by the quality.
how's the crash on the ping ride?
I don't know, I haven't tried it out yet. But I'm not really concerned about it's crashing capabilities, seeing how I rarely used the Sweet Ride's crash in all the time I've had it. Most of the reason I don't crash on it is because I set it really low on my kit. I'll place it up higher next time I play and experiment with the crash.

We_Love_Lime
08-23-2006, 07:33 PM
I don't know.
For Instance on Dani California/Californiacation whenever he opens them, they don't seem to have any presence, I don't know if he means to play like that, but they just seem so weak, especially when you need a good solid timekeeper in a Funk/Rock setting.
Sync0pation
08-23-2006, 07:38 PM
Yeah, I know, the hats don't even sound like hats in Dani California. I think he's just doing some crazy expression thing using his feet to make it sound cooler, not really to keep time. But in songs such as "Readymade" and "We Believe" the hats have a fine presence. I also think in Dani California the producers screwed around with the hihat sound to make it sound more in background. (especially in the verse right after the 2nd chorus... closed hihat on the left speaker and open on the right? it just sounds weird there).
We_Love_Lime
08-23-2006, 07:39 PM
Meh.
I just listined to both We Belive and Readymade, I can see how he digs into them more.
But they don't even sound like hats, it sounds like some stupid Electric Programed Tambourine.
My opinion though.

okay, i can totally understand that, it can suck when it drowns everything else out.
i do the crash the ride thing because rides are usually bigger, so they can give you that extra push when you need it, and if you have a crashable ride, and have to do a small gig you can just bring the ride, and leave a crash at home

I have A Love Supreme, and I have MaxRoach with some Pianist, which is tight and... Charlie Parker Washington Concerts with Joe Timer, Max Roach, and Don Lamond drumming.
And like Bob James and David Sanborn.
Other than that, it just boils down to listining to jazz on public radio.

meinls are great. i also agree, the vault ride is pretty awful
Sounds I LOVE:
Meinl 22" Byzance Heavy Ride
Meinl 21" Byzance Med Ride
19" Vault crash
Sounds I HATE:
Any Crash under 14".
Max Splashes.
Light rides.

He uses MB20's Hats(I dont know witch ones though) live and Heavy Hats for recording.
I'm thinking of my final cymbal setup, It will consist of a 22" Byzance Heavy Ride, 19" Vault Crash, 14" AAX Stage Hats.
Very simple. I have yet to resume my journey to find a favorite Splash/China

mine will probably have a 21'' Byzance dark ride, 18'' byzance brilliant medium crash, 18'' AAX dark crash, 14'' AA sizzle hats, 8'' and 10'' saw blades, 20'' 2oo2 novo china, and maybe a splash, then for smaller gigs i'd probably just use the hats, dark ride, dark crash, 8'' sawblade, and the china if i need it

Yeah, I forgot about Rudes - the shining example of why I hate cymbals for "metal"
I mean, if you want something to "cut through" - amplify. Don't use nasty sounding drain covers just because they're loud.
Cutting isn't about volume; it's about tone. The reason why high pitched cymbals are often used in rock/metal settings is because they occupy a frequency setting outside of down-tuned distorted guitars and bass. This is part of the reason why drums that are tuned higher tend to cut through better as well (although projection and resonance are equally important factors).
Anyways, there are few well made cymbals that I genuinely dislike. For me, each as its own purpose and strengths, and if this were a perfect world, I'd have a full cymbal vault to choose from when recording or playing music.
I've heard good drummers with ****ty cymbals

that is true, but with 90% of drummers on the amateur circuit around here, its ****ty drummers with ****ty cymbals.

The whole line is disgusting. I'd love for bozzio to play with some decent cymbals for a change. Everything sounds like shattered chinas.
