Get d'addario Prosteels, they're metallic as hell, and damn cheap. If you find that's not cutting it though, you're gonna have to shell out like $45 to get Elixers.

Strings go dead, its just the way of the world. There are no strings that don't lose their "fresh out of the package" sound even after one night of playing. None. You can go the route of Elixers, but even though they last a long time, they never really sound like a conventional new string. Also, the coating breaks away very easily when used with a pick.
Buy lots of strings, or just deal with the lack of new-string tone.

Elixirs can still give a metallic tone and they do last a lot longer than most normal strings.
They sound bright but not as bright as some other makes right out of the pack but they will maintain that tone at lot longer.
D'Addario ExP strings are pretty good as well, they are coated and keep their tone a good while.

DR black Beauties(or Red Devils, Blue.....) have none of the crappy bright tone when you put them on. Plus they last forever and they look fantastic

you can boil them.
just put apot of water one the stove and when it starts to boil that put your stings in it for about 15 minutes.

Also, the coating breaks away very easily when used with a pick.
But it only breaks away right where you're picking, right? That's a few inches, and the whole fingerboard length of the strings would still be fine. Or am I missing something?

It breaks off no matter how you play, all over the string. Using a pick will just make it break off faster in the places where you pick.
To TS... wash your hands every time you play. Sounds obvious but you'd be surprised how many people don't do it. When I started doing it, my strings lasted months longer.

It's not supposed to sound like anything. Bas is supposed to be so low in the mix that you don't hear it.

So all bass tones should be the same then?
And no, adding your myspace in your posts isn't spam unless that is all that is there. Why don't you go tell Steve Lawson he is spamming too?

There are hartike strings that you can buy off of a few sites that are about $12-15 US a pack. Buy a bunch of those, nice and cheep. Also wash your hands before you play.

I'd try Elixirs, they're great value for money. And yeah was your hands, wipe them with a cloth when they get sweaty, wipe your strings down after playing, look both ways before crossing the street, have fun.

wipe your strings down after playing. I have an old winter cap i use to wipe my fretboard and back of the neck down after i play. My hands sweat like crazy so i need to wipe my necks off after playing.

The best thing to do in order to keep your strings new is to wash your hands before you pick up your bass, and give the strings a good wipe down after you're done playing, especially if you sweat a lot from your hands. Another thing, is to clean your fretboard. If you have a lot of gunk the fretboard, it'll get on the strings and make them go dead very quickly.

I got this stuff called fretfast, it cleans and conditions your fretboard and strings and makes them sound almost new again. Its good stuff. You should try and find some of that somewhere. It cost me about £4 and lasts ages.
Here it is:

that stuff is good. Dr. stringfellow is good too. I use it on my guitar sometimes, becuase it gets rid of the "string talk" which is annoying on guitar. I really don't get string talk when i play bass, so i don't use it on my basses ever.

washing your hands and wiping everything down should help out a lot. if you feel that it's not working, then you can always get some alcohol spirit and an extra set of strings. just soak your old strings in the spirit while you play the new ones. then when the new ones sound flat, switch them out with the old strings in the spirit.
i might suggest buying a thrid set of strings. i forgot about the time it takes to dry after they are out of the alcohol.
...basically, just set up a system like that. always keep them in rotation.
