Pick up OK Computer/Kid A as fast as you can. After that, try some sonic youth, dinosaur jr., my bloody valentine, and husker du.
For something different than what you have up there, try Sigur Ros or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Also, Minus The Bear, Bear vs. Shark, and At The Drive-in.
I'm only in this forum because I like LCD Soundsystem.

both of them tend to have annoying fanbases.
Nothing wrong with the actual bands though. Beatles just sound better to my ears :)
(and are probably closer to alt/indie than either of those two)

If you want to get into some real indie stuff, check out Lake of Dracula - Lake of Dracula. It has a really raw production that might take a bit of getting used to but I've never really cared about production quality.
Also check out The Mountain Goats. Probably one of my most favorite bands. About a month ago, I was hooked on them so much that I refused to listen to anything other than Mountain Goats albums. It lasted about 2 weeks just listening to The Mountain Goats and I really enjoyed it. It's mostly all acoustic with some added instruments on some songs. Also some of the albums have poor production and the newer albums have good production.
Yo La Tengo

the worst is Black/Death metal.
just spending a short time in R&M, these guys bash everything with an even slightly catchy melody. at least we justify our bashing (even if we're wrong, we give more in-depth reasoning) :p

but it's way indier to hate them
well of course. that's why you're a "popular" idie kid if you like them. indie kids can't like popular things and be indie.
EDIT: btw, it's more indie to say that you like them in the midst of all the hating. that way you're ultra independent for liking something most indie kids hate. but then when the other indie kids catch on and start saying they like them too, it's time to say you hate them, if you're really indie at least.

it depends. if you're around a bunch of mainstream kids, you have to be like "pssh, forget this corporate garbage. i'm gonna go listen to Neutral Milk Hotel."
but if it's around a bunch of other indie kids you need to be like "pssh, you guys need to grow up. just because it's pop doesn't mean it's bad. stop trying to be so elite. i guess i'm just more mature than you. i'm gonna go listen to Neutral Milk Hotel."

Actually, their sound is rather old and stale. And they don't really make any new sounds, they still use the old fashioned setup of guitar bass and drums. If you really want a new sound, it would have to be a band consisting of four twenty year olds trying to make music with children's toys.

Too late. Someone burned Shake the Sheets for me, and I didn't think it was that great. It was way too inconsistent IMO. And a lot of the time the lyrics got waaay to repetitive. But the songs that are good are, well...amazing

get "Black Folliage: Animation Music" by Olivia Tremor Control. it has the Beatles-ish sound of Of montreal, but it's more dark and cool, and less "WEEE! HAPPY! YAY! COLORS!". lots of cool instrumentaion too. very good stuff.
