Ok so I'm looking for a new rig atm, and I tried this SWR 8x8" cab. I really liked the sound of it; it was very responsive, really punchy at low end and all round very well defined. If I get this i'll probably match it up with a 480W GK amp, the cab is also 480W. BTW I play finger style metal. This config seems a bit unusual, most bass amps are 10" or 15 ". I was just wondering if anyone else has this kinda cab and/or any comments on it. Also Does anyone know a band that uses this kinda amp?

I've tried SWR's Henry 8x8. It sounded pretty decent until I got into the lower register. Anything below a low E seemed to put too much stress on the cab and caused it to fart out WAY too easily.

i love the swr 8x8.. my old bass teacher uses one with a 5 string and he has no problems with the low end at all.. its boomy and tight..

im not sure if its the best cab for metal though.. my bass teacher was a session musician with quite a bright tight sound

If I did use one I would want to add a 1x18 or 2x15 to go with it and Biamp it. I would expect quite a hifi sound with it on its own.

Two things... First, I was suprised that it farted out on me because all other accounts I've heard of this cab match what you said. Word on the street is that it handles lows rather well. Second... boomy AND tight. Those are pretty much opposite of each other, so I'm not really sure how it could be both. More like a one or the other type thing, but I guess I'm just being anal today

hehe it was boomy because it had a lot of bass and really projected it.. and it was tight sounding because it was really crisp and precise.. (maybe my adjectives suck!) i thought it was a great cab..

just for the record i tried the cab with an old swr 350x head from about 4 years ago. such an awesome rig.. the new 350x heads dont touch the older ones...

^^^I definitely agree about old SWR vs. new SWR. Their old stuff was great. The old Grand Prix preamps were awesome compared to the new IOD.

yeah, A tight sound is what I'm after. The stuff I play is pretty fast and using fingers, and I want that to be defined. In fact I'm not a real huge fan of rumble, and I'm sure PA's are pretty decent at rumbling if my amp couldn't cut it at a gig.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is that I've found all other cabs, both 4x10 and 1x15 to be too rumbly and i wonder if its my bass. I have an ergodyme 605, with the B string, and things seem to quickly get muddy below E at high volumes. The active eq helps a fair bit with that, but I just wonder if I had a different bass then other amps would have taken low notes more gracefully. The problem being later on a buy a new and better bass, and dont like the cab anymore.

I guess I just need to try other basses in the shop while trying out these amps hey.

Also this rig should be loud enough keep up with the rest of my band in a rehearsing situation yeah?

^^^It sounds like you might be doing some funky things with the EQ on your amp to produce the mud you're describing. Have you tried cutting bass and treble a bit and adding some mids? That will tighten everything up considerably... just a thought...
