REPOST from BEGINNING BASS:

Hi there,
I am looking at purchasing either a http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Schecter-Stiletto-Deluxe5-Bass?sku=513048

or a

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Schecter-Omen5-5String-Bass-Guitar?sku=513489

or is there a better bass out there in this style and range for a better price?

I am also looking for a middle of the line bass combo amp. I am planning on playing gigs with this amp so it needs to be of the right wattage and speaker size/etc for mic'ing.

I am an experienced guitarist (around 6 years or so) but I am completely ignorant on bass shtuff.

thanks for any help!

(I play metal/progressive rock)

PS: any tips on effects pedals too?

Both good basses, but if I were you I would check out some Ibanez basses as well. Yorkville amps are great as are peavey amps.

Have you tried them out?

I love Schecter, but I know for a fact, that it is not for everybody. Go and try them out.

With effects, you just have to try some. No one can tell you what effects you will like. And don't feel a need to use effects. They can add a ton to your sound, but use them conservatively. If you use them too much it just will sound bad.

I've played an Omen 5, which I can't say I liked very much. Maybe it was the really old strings or the crappy amp, but I didn't play it for too long. I wasn't big on the feel of it either.

Of those two get the Stilletto. Much better bass IMO. It plays better and a has a better over all tone. And by the looks of it you'd prolly be drop tunning? I assume that's why you wanted a 5 stringer. If your not or you don't mind down tunning...

If your looking for a good metal/prog bass that you don't mind down tunning you could try a Fender MIM Jazz. Huge after market for them. Great scooped tone for metal.

If your going to save up a little more you can always check out the Schecter Stiletto Deluxe series of there basses. Awesome basses for the money.

As for amps, you'd prolly want at least 100 watts or so. You should check out the Fender Rumble 100, and some Ashdown combos. Both have good reviews, and I personally like both quite a bit.
