Anyone heard of or into this guy's playing? Check out his bass.

For those of you who don't know he played in the metal band "Death." You can hear some great songs and basslines on Death's album "Individual Thought Patterns." You should really check him out, he's great.
Yeah for metal heads! Yup, he plays a esp custom fretless. Pretty damn good, he also plays with Testement.

Yeah he's played for a lot of groups. He was also in a Jazz group. I think he's pretty underrated.
Yeah, him and sean malone are the only fretless metal players i know. Actually Sean Malone wrote a Jaco Pastorius tablature book.

What's Gordian Knot like?
What's Gordian Knot like?
Prog rock, its more of a small side project.

and Cynic is like thrash/death or something right?
Prog/tech metal. Most of his playing is pretty technical.

Sweet I'm going to check them out. Any recommended tracks to start out on?
I'm not really a big fan of cynic's vocalist but the intrumentals are pretty good. Check out How Could I and Veil of Maya.

Gordian Knot is far, far superior to Cynic, in my opinion. It's easily the best instrumental rock I've ever heard. The songs have very listenable, catchy and enjoyable melodies as well as incredibly technical (and emotive) leads. The best part, though, is the layering - there can be so many riffs going at once that you don't know whether it's noise or a very tightly woven tapestry of sound. A good example of this is Code Anticode.

You just think it's better because you're a jazz guy:p
Even though I feel the same way

Gordian Knot is in no way jazz. Cynic is in no way jazz. I hate it when people say they have "a lot of jazz mixed in there". By that logic, any music with a seventh chord in it is jazz. You want jazz, you listen to John Coltrane or pre-fusion Miles Davis and I dare you to make any comparison to what Sean Malone is doing. Sorry, I'm elitist like that.
The reason why I like it is because it's superior. It's not about taste, it's about fact. Cynic's music was not as developed harmonically, conceptually, melodically or structurally. It's not a matter of liking/disliking the death metal vocals and the robot voice (I kinda dig the combination actually). You can easily tell that a lot more thought and heart went into the Gordian Knot project.

I didn't say it was jazz, silly. But it's pretty obviously near-fusion, and fusion is a bit more jazzy than tech-death, methinks.
Regarding your 2nd paragraph: Relax, it was a joke.

steve digiorgio, tony choy, and sean malone are the best metal bass players in my opinion. steve and sean both lay down very tasteful and fun lines with their fretlesses, and tony choy is a fiend on his bass . . . all three of them play some very technical stuff too, and surprisingly, all their lines blend in perfectly with their type of music, which is heavy, fast, thick, and loud death/thrash metal . . .

well, you have to keep in mind that focux was released in 1993. gordian knot's first album was 1999. that's six whole years, and within that time, sean malone got his Ph.D in music and whatnot, so you'd think his sound would evolve the least bit within that time, and sean malone, after all, is the chief composer in gordian knot . . .
and that's DR. malone to you too i guess :p . . .

It is funny what kind of bands Steve plays with, he is coming down with Sebastian Bach from Skid Row to do a couple of shows in Australia. He is an amazing player, his work with iced earth is really solid, and testament sounds awesome with him. Great bass player, one of my favs.

Wow I havent been here in ages! :p
Steve is not just one of my favourite Metal or fretless bassists but in general.
One group I dont think anyone has mentioned yet is Dark Hall, his Fusion band. I've only heard 4 or 5 tracks but I'm a huge fan of the stuff! I recommend to all!

I love DiGiorgio, especially his playing on Individual Thought Patterns, but I'm almost positive that he had absolutely nothing to do with The Sound of Perserverance.

Though I agree with you completely, even Gordian Knot themselves call themselves Jazz Metal, go on their myspace and they blatantly say they're rock / death metal / jazz
Though I like Death (i like any Math Metal band), I dislike Steve DiGiorgio's playing, his fretless tone isn't that great and hes the only bassist I would ever call a "wank solo" man. I hate saying players wank but I think Steve DiGiorgio is one of the few bassists who actually wanks badly

First of all, it says on the Gordian Knot myspace that it's a fan-run myspace, so its not like Sean Malone manages it. Second, they classify it as "nu-jazz", which is definitely not the same as jazz.

Wow.
Just checked out Gordian knot's myspace and I love their stuff, I might have to get the self titled album somehow, especially if Myung and Trey Gunn worked with him on it.
