View Full Version : How Do I Find Like-Minded Jazz Musicians?

Please post any advice you can give on how to find like-minded musicians?
my problem-
I want to find other people (specifically a bassist) with a taste for avant jazz and such like late Coltrane, Dolphy, Coleman, Ayler, Taylor etc.
I have had a little luck on the internet but it's run out.
When I do go to clubs and ask people it doesn't usually go too well. It's possible that will change when I turn 21 in a few months, and I'll be able to go to a lot more clubs to meet people.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thank you in advance

Grab your gear, set up on a street corner in a district you think you'll have more luck in, and start playing. There are about two different reactions people will have to avant-garde jazz, and it should be easy to tell which reaction comes from the people you're looking for. :p
Sorry, I don't have any real advice (although I'm sure the above would work, you would probably receive some complaints, and might be a bit embarrassed). I just happen to be lucky that I have a friend who's as in to avant-garde music as I am.
P.S. What do you play?

I play guitar and percussion and I'm learning alto sax. I have a diverse sound, you can hear Coltrane, Cherry, Dolphy, Hendrix blues, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler Trio... it's funny, I dont listen to much guitar.

add in the paper, go to other gigs and nick the bassist from there

Where are you from? I only know one bassist who's into avant-garde jazz, and he's from somewhere in Alberta, on the off-chance that you're from somewhere around there. My only other advice is to put up ads at your local music shops, provided they have a board for that kind of thing.
Be so avant-garde that you don't use a bassist.
College campuses and other "open-minded" institutions are usually a good place to look. Or ask your school's band director if he knows of anyone.

You listen to Derek Bailey? If you like avant-garde/free guitar, he's your man.

I'm from Minnesota. I guess I've never checked to see if there are things like that at music shops, I'll do that. Thank you.

Thanks, but I already do that, but I really like bass, it just makes everything right. And I don't go to school, I am a slacker in that respect.

I'm not crazy about him. He is inspiring sometimes though.

I realized today that it's really just about luck and of course, talking to a lot of people. Eventually you will find somebody. I had crazy luck today and (long story short) I will be meeting with some old accomplished avant jazz guys that I met at a screening of a new documentary about Albert Ayler.

Minnesota eh? Where about?
Look for a band called Mojo Dojo on Myspace. They played at this Open Mic night a few hundred times in the Warehouse District of MPLS, alot of Avant Jazz going on there. Also, check Guitar Center in Roseville.
There's a guy in the Pro Audio Department that plays Keys, he should be able to hook you up, he's tall, bald, looks like that Smashing Pumpkins guy, and his name is Derek. He seems knowledgable of the Jazz Scene here in Minnesota.
Post flyers at some of the Rehearsal Spaces (Twin Cities Sound, Kooler Sound, etc). And also post flyers at the U of M! Lots of Jazz wierdo's stalking that place. If you're bored, hang out in Dinky Town. You'll meet alot of them.
I'd say I would help, as my band is a Jazz/Grind/Death band, but I don't have a bass and I'm the guitarist. Sorry.
Hope this works out and you meet some Avant Jazz guys and Pioneer that Genre.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
I just happened to meet some people yesterday through a friend and I found a bass, sax, and drummer. I finally have people to play with now!
It's just crazy luck. :D

1. Ask your friends
2. Classifieds
3. Internet
4. Street corner idea
5. Study other musicians at gigs and take down their names, they may come in useful for later, or just for contacts

Yes I do. Yes I do.
I think I'll do that when I feel I'm at full strength. That and New York... :thumb:

There is a lot of really dumb **** that miles said, that people are always quoting, but in the context of this thread,...that was awesome.

Move to New Orleans.
If that's not an option just try to find jazz shows to go to, etc.

It seems like people are always lifting statements from his autobiography, and placing them into extraneous contexts, where his statements suddenly sound much more profound than they actually were.
It happens alot with quotations, but I guess I've noticed it alot with Miles.

Why don't you just ask a local band if you can sit in at a practice or gig (if they play one spot regularly)?
Jazz isn't built on bands like rock, it's built on individuals who know their ****.
