I honestly don't get it. I can see why people like the music and everything, but I really don't get some of the praise it gets. Many people around here have the Sufjan Syndrome, and I'm wondering if anyone can explain to me why it's so powerful.

It's pop music that makes people feel sophisticated.
I don't think he's terrible or anything, but very undeserving of the amount of attention he's getting.

you seem to forget talking in one big sentance cause it makes you look mysterious but really you are just way to indesicive when it comes to naming your songs-itis.
I like him, but I'd much rather listen to something with more substance, and less pretention.

I like him because some songs sound good. I'm not going to listen just for indie cred.
No "Sufjan Syndrome" here.

No. There wasn't. Bring up links and legal documents and I will just deny them.
My threads are original.

I support this notion of this motion, let's consult the ocean. Oh, look a drowning Croation, with this proclamation, as a nation, we Will save him.

Yeah, I guess he's kinda overrated but I like at least a handful of songs on Illnois. John Wayne Gacy Jr. Casimir Pulaski Day, Decatur are probably my favorites off the album.

I like him a lot. Beautiful music.
Personally, I think the challenging of Sufjan is more of the "syndrome."

His music doesn't bother me. I enjoy some of it. It's easy for me to see why people would be crazy about his music, but it's also easy to see why others can't stand it at all.

indifferent to his music.
why do you have to get it? you either like it or you don't. a lot of people are into this kinda stuff. i'm not really into it that much at all, but i mean it's not like i sit around wondering "why the hell do people like that guy". i'm pretty sure all music is like this. or at least a vast majority.

I don't understand the Mew syndrome. But I'm not that crazy about Sufjan either.

Many people enjoy alot of things that are overatted. I personally like his music very much and I wear a scarf....when it's cold.

After much wait, I decided to check him out today, and after listening to a few songs on Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lakes State, I like what I'm hearing.
His music, or at least what I've heard of it, feels very delicate. But without analysing it deeply, I've already found a number of tracks that are instantly likeable.

I don't get the big deal. His music is enjoyable but I don't understand the fuss surrounding him though.

Wasn't he on The OC or something? Thats why non indie kids like him. Also it gives them some credibility. And indie kids do like him to get the attention of the popular kids who watch The OC. So its really just one vicious cycle that anyone who knows good music won't fall into.

I think he's a fairly innocuous musician, and he doesn't really deserve as much discussion as he gets, negative OR positive. His music is pretty charming, but certainly nothing to write home about. I like him.

Seven Swans is a pretty badass album. It's the only one of the three I've listened to that actually sounds like someone was around telling him, "No, don't add that interlude;" "No, that song sounds exactly like that other one;" etc. If Illinoise were edited at all, it'd be a much, much stronger album than it turned out.
But still not totally great.
I like him a lot. Beautiful music.
You also like Islands, so you don't count.

Why do people say there's some huge fuss surrounding him? I've never heard anyone make a big deal about him. Everyone I know that likes him doesn't think he's the greatest thing ever or anything.
I think the only people who blow Sufjan out of proportion are the people who dislike him. This is the truth. I really don't think this hype over Sufjan that people complain about actually exists. Yeah, he was written about a lot when his album came out, because it was good, and it received a lot of attention because the New York Times and some other big media liked it, but nobody actually overstated its greatness or importance in the way that Anti-Sufjan Syndrome portrays it. A lot of people said "This is a really good album," which is a valid and justified response, and that was about hte extent of it.
By now, the people who dislike him are giving him way more attention.

And your name is Sam, so you don't count.
What's wrong with islands?
I'm just saying. You like Islands, so of course you like Sufjan.
I like him in small doses.

Um let me give some perspective.
I live in an area where hardcore music rules the scene and kids are starting to finally open up their horizons.
Enter Illinois by sufjan. This may not pertain to all areas across america, but there certainly is a sydrome here. It's like mentioning sufjan stevens unlocks this animalistic obsession in people that has been hidden away for a great many years.
