My dad just showed it to me. The things they do with their throat are insane.

It was Paul Pena on his album Genghis Blues.

Is Paul Pena that blind guy? Didn't know he did this kinda stuff.

yeah. apparently the story goes like this:

he's blind, so he was bored as hell. He was going through radio stations and heard it. And he was like "wtf is this" then tried to learn it. He eventually had to teach himself chinese to learn how to do it. Then he went to Tuva and won a competition for it. All while being blind.

I don't hear much extremely different from other singing I've heard before.

whoever does the singing sounds like a chinese tom waits when they go low

I guess he was determined. Pretty cool.

The links on the site weren't working on my slow connection, so I listened to the Tuvan national anthem on another site. Nice. For some reason, I kept picturing Kuato from Total Recall singing.

If these recordings linked to here don't make it clear (I haven't heard them), I've got Genghis Blues as well as Kongar-ol Ondar's (the Tuvan singer collaborating with Paul Pena on that record) most famous album, which you can grab from me on slsk.

The thing that's most amazing to me about throat singing in Tuva is its original purpose. Before Western influences came into Tuva, throat singing wasn't a concert art; there weren't throat singing performances in Tuva. They just do it like we whistle, while they're herding or harvesting or doing other chores, they just throat sing as they work.

Maybe I can grab that album from you at some point.

I had some workshop through school with some throat singer. He tought us the physics to it, aswell as a crack at the basic technique. Fairly interesting.

My music teacher attempted it, and it was really hard not to laugh.

My music teacher attempted it, and it was really hard not to laugh.Same thing happened to me. But one of my dumbass friends, and a self-proclaimed musical retard at that, practiced it for like two days while driving his Philly Connection delivery route and now he can DO IT! WTF!!?

I couldn't hear it in the sample I listened to, nor when my teacher attempted it, but we heard a recording where it was quite clear. It's a little mind-boggling. I want Genghis Blues
