I think it's when the guitarist slides his fretting hand slowly down the strings to make it sound like something is falling from the sky. It's very audible in "Welcome to the Jungle" too.

No, it's pushing down on the tremolo bar to decrease the pitch of the note/s.

Yeh it's great, but what about the bit at 3:05 in Dance Of Death when the other guitars join in on the first main electric part...OH ****ING YES!!! :D

What do you think about bands of today that are influenced by Iron Maiden? For some strange reason, a lot of them are actually pop-punk bands that occasionally throw out some homages to their heroes.

Here are some pictures of a band called Coheed and Cambria. I never thought about it before, but looking at the bassist, he is definitely Steve-influenced. Check out the sweatbands, and the way he plucks the bass:

http://www.coheedandcambria.com/images/co.ca8.jpg

If that's too subtle for you, then look at what shirt the lead singer is wearing (and the guitar):

http://www.coheedandcambria.com/images/co.ca9.jpg

So while these bands may never come close to Maiden's level of virtuousity or everlasting appeal, I think they definitely have good taste in music.

the last i heard on the next maiden releases, is the DoD tour DVD around christmas this year, and a maiden album either late next year, or 2006. they're doing another festival tour like the GMETID tour in 2003 in 2005, playing the old songs at festivals, but having only stopped touring a few months ago, i doubt they'll have a whole album's worth of songs ready before they tour, meaning they wouldn't have time to record and release by the winter. so 2006 is more likely.
then there's also Bruce's solo album, which is suposedly being released this year, but i haven't heard anything in a while.

I think Iron Maiden have what I call "Rolling Stones Syndrome".

Basically, they are around for ages, break every country they go to, have a huge worldwide fan base, and influence bands for years to come, but for some reason the media won't recognize them as a sellable rock band.

Saw them on the DOD tour. Very cool. It's quite strange that Eddie kept getting bigger. He couldn't even fit on the stage by the end of the night! lol

dive bombing is, as someone said, swinging the trem bar about 180 degrees roundto make a well, diving sound with the noise. thinking of it like an extreme string bend, but in the other direction (down the scale not up it). sliding down the strings with a fretting hand is, oddly enough, a slide.

i saw something on scuzz tv news section today.... iron maiden drummer nicko McBAIN in court.... i'm more shocked by scuzz's ignorance than the article

So, this is another What Maiden songs are bad?" situation? Unfair questions...the only bad Maiden song is Tailgunner.

how so? Tailgunner was one of the first 3 Maiden songs that got me into the band and i still think a staple in their career, keeping strong after the classic lineup was altered when H left. Excellent song that was titled after a porno movie brurce and steve saw and decided the lyrics should be about air warfare lol. why dont you like it? its a great uplifting Maiden tune that id love to hear live!

According to a posting on the IRON MAIDEN fan site MaidenFans.com, MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith has ended years of fan speculation by revealing that the 2000 album "Brave New World" featured leftovers from the 1998 CD "Virtual XI". Asked in a 2003 interview to identify the four songs that were written during the sessions for "Virtual XI" that ended up on its follow-up, Smith said "'Nomad' is one of them. The others are 'Dream of Mirrors', 'Mercenary', I can't remember the fourth one."

The interviewer, Kevin Lomax, had the following to say about the issue: "I did the interview in the Sanctuary Music London after a brief preview of the 'Dance of Death' album. The interview was with Adrian Smith. I had fears before asking that question, because maybe Steve Harris might have said 'Don't tell.' Anyway, I asked and he said that 'Nomad' (which I'm surprised), 'Dream of Mirrors' (not surprised in any way!) and 'Mercenary' (the worst song of 'BNW' from 'Virtual XI', that's obvious!) were from 'Virtual XI'. He couldnt remember the fourth one. And I asked if 'Blood Brothers' could be one of them, because it has similar melodies [to] 'Educated Fool'. He said no, it was not. He thought for a while but he couldnt remember the fourth. (Maybe didnt want to answer)

"I had a quick chat with [former IRON MAIDEN singer] Blaze [Bayley] in Istanbul, before his performance in Rock The Nations Istanbul. (Where he did a duet with Paul Di'Anno) And in that chat he said that he had written some of the lyrics of 'Dream of Mirrors' but Steve didn't give him a credit for that in 'BNW'. When he saw that he [was a bit frustrated]."

the left overs from virtual x prob their worst album were used for brave new world one of their best album  lol

YJM
09-13-2004, 12:31 PM
lol BNW is an AWESOME album man. Personally I believe Blaze's time in the band, was their worst and the 4 songs you stated being from the album prior to BNW, VirtualX, are lucky to be spared from being on that album, because atleast they can have Bruce singing them and giving them the standard they need.

the songs which, as far as i can see, are staples of all maiden shows:

2 minutes to midnight
the trooper
number of the beast

fear of the dark
one song from "seventh son"
iron maiden

i wouldn't care if they got rid of songs like the trooper, run to the hills etc. they've played run to the hills every single gig since 1982, except the NY gig this year when they couldn't play the encore. anything off powerslave and i'd be happy, or even better something off somewhere in time. they rarely play anything off piece of mind either, besides the trooper. there's dozens of great songs they've never played live, like to tame a land, most of powerslave, alexander the great etc. they should have more than one setlist for a tour, or at least change a couple of songs throughout the tour.

their not touring now... i think they said somthing about touring the summer 2005... and new album around the end of 2005/beginning of 2006(pretty much the same thing as they did in 2003...)

Would i betray my god(steve Harris) if i bought an 6 string bass? :p

edit:
Frail: :D :thumb:

no no no, not at all. go for it! i love 6-string basses, though i dont own one (i have two 4 and one 5) but a six string is alot of fun to play on, you can really get creative with chords and do alot more leads, follow harmonies better, etc...Steve wouldnt mind hehe.

they are planning to do more US shows like they did in 03's "give'em Ed till im dead" tour (i saw the Chicago date, fantastic!!!!!!!!!!) so i will be probely attending 2-3 of the shows pending on how close they are.

i own both a P and a Jazz bass (both fender) and i will stand by this...Jazz basses have a more rich tone and sound overall stronger, but P-basses play twice as easy and you can gain more speed on them.

how? that got to be straight forward playing.. cause they arent created to be technical on :p (the neck is to fat..)

if it ahs a fat nek you cnat play tecnicle. i cant do much on the higer frets because of mys mal fingers and the neck widening so if sumthign has a wide neck you cant be technicle on it because you need to get your fingers properly over it all so it myust be standard playong. but if somthign has a fat neck its hard to reach even for standard playign on the e string

originally- Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton (iron maiden)
the classic years- Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (killers-seventh son...)
the 90's- Dave Murray and Janick Gers (no prayer... - virtual X1)
the full lineup- Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, and Janick Gers (brave new world- ? )

Bruce wouldnt come back in the band unless Adrian came back as well, which i think really helped get the "true" Maiden sound back, as Adrian is such a big part of their sound.

I ain't heard any rumours like that...only rumour I've heard (that was confirmed by a certain Mr. Dickinson) was that they are going to be in Donington next year...I'm not too sure where else tho...

I'm in Australia and I heard earlier this year a rumour flying around that Iron Maiden was going to head out here for a tour. Apparently the rumour also was that Metallica were gonna head out here with them to make an incredible concert IMO :thumb: Hopefully theres some truth to this and they might be out here next year!

Has anyone heard anything about this, or know if it might be true?

 i doubt it, bruce might have hurted Lars's Ego  *racalls dickinson in oslo "Were not like 'kin Metallica!"*

you probably realise this but none of the songs you actually mentioned are on albums...
Both are B-Sides plus no WAY they are ever gonna play Women in Uniform because the whole band hate it...

It starts out kind of sluggish, which I don't really like. But when the whole band speeds up for the solo... that's just awesome.

I know this... I would like to see them included in the setlist since they are like the major pre-first album songs.

I never knew the whole band hate, I think its kinda cool.

I also like to see Killers, Phantom of the Opera, Another life, Purgatory, Prodigal son, and maybe remember tomorrow...Wrathchild is overplayed IMO

^ I usually use three fingers for speed, but the rhythm of Phantom of the Opera makes it impossible for me to do it with anything but two. I can't even get it all the time, but if I build up enough speed I can usually get it right sometimes.

I wasnt talkin to you

I play drums and Hallowed be thy name is very hard

Phantom of The Opera is hard to play, but I can manage it now, I've been playing 9 months now though, so that could explain it.

judas be my guide baffles me. but i havent been playing that long. i think im going to get my teacher to help me with it. (Ive been playing long enough to be able to "play" it, i just cant work it out, i aint no novice  )

09-23-2004, 03:12 PM
judas be my guide is a fantastic song, i found it relatively easy to play, but i guess i have been playing a little longer.

off the subject, have maiden ever released a live version of 'seventh son of a seventh son' (the track!) with a single or anything, i'd love to hear it live!

ed hunter
09-23-2004, 03:13 PM
on bass the intro the che clairvoyant is awkward because of the dead notes involved which i hate

and, mercenary, check out Maiden England - the live video/cd of the seventh tour of the seventh tour

IMO Judas is one of the best songs on FOTD as well :D

Actually the Hallowed be thy name solo isn't that bad, it was the second solo I could play (after trooper).

The hardest riffs/songs that I have tried to learn are: Intro to Afraid to shoot strangers, getting the the harmonic gallop in killers right, the intro to aces high, the futureal riff and NOTB it is kinda tricky...

GurS
