I'm just listening to Rhapsody's Power Of The Dragonflame. It kinda rocks.
I think I prefer AMOLAD though...naturally.
Anything it would be fun to hear Maiden cover a Rhapsody song?
Quiksilver26
09-18-2006, 07:59 PM
Yea, that'd be something to hear... although it'd also be interesting to hear Rhapsody covering a Maiden song... Just imagine Paschendale or something with full out orchestras, and have the lyrics take on a new meaning.. perhaps about dragons and wizards and everything .

ie. once i start uni next week :)
the new albums grown on me considerably since i was last on, but it's still not one of my all-time favourites, i reckon it'll be much better live.
not many bands could get anywhere near as close as maidens though, it's a lot to live upto, especially if they're doing a straight metal cover, i'd like to see more obscure ones like the zwan one of NotB
anyone know of any?
Quiksilver26
09-19-2006, 08:34 PM
 I didn't even know Zwan did a cover of NotB... And tbh I really can't imagine wtf that would sound like in the slightest.
The only covers I know are the mostly mislabeled ones on Limewire or whatever.. covers of Aces High, The Trooper, etc.
Iced Earth did a good cover of Hallowed. Good, not great.

I think The Trooper is quite a coverable song. It's very distinctive with its riffs, but still something that is fairly easy to put your own style onto.
EDIT: It's worth mentioning that my band covers The Wicker Man.

Iced Earth did a good cover of Hallowed. Good, not great.
They've also covered Transylvania on their Horror Show album. I thought they did a good job with that one, it wasn't bad.

Ehh.. I've been meaning to get into Iced Earth for a while now =\ All I've heard aside from some assorted songs, was my buddy's Horrow Show cd in math class one time. You guys have any suggestions of what some chillin IE albums are? :) (i've heard great things about The Glorious Burden)
Night of the Storm Rider or Something Wicked this Way Comes are my favorites. If you can find Alive in Athens, buy it immediately, it's my favorite live album ever (3 discs!)
The Glorious Burden is good, but unlike typical Iced Earth and I've seen many mixed opinions. But the Gettysburg trilogy is the best thing they've ever written.

You can find it up on youtube.
Ok now that i have listened to the album the hwole way through, i can now share my thoughts.
To be honest atm this defianetely isnt my favorite maiden album. It has a few bum tracks and a few good(awesome) tracks, but in a whole its pretty good. I can definately see why this album is described as a grower. And it will probably grow on me in the future. But i must say, the lyrics on this album are phenominal, best lyrics in a long time. One major problem i had with this album was how low bruces vocals are. I could barely hear it durring a few parts of the album. I also dont really like the 'live-ness' they did with his voice.
Tracks:
Some compared OotS to tears of the dragon, to be honest i like tears of the dragon better.
i didnt really like the pilgrim on first listen
FtGGoG = pwnage
I didnt really like LoL aswell as the legacy
Everything else was awesome
The longest day is amazing
In a whole it sounded alot different then anything else i have heard from maiden.

Wow, The Frank.
OotS-Your right, Tears Of The Dragon is better, but I'd say it's compared as they sound alike in some ways.
The Pilgrim-I kinda' agree, and still do..It's still yet to REALLY catch me.
LoL- Quite good song. The intro is complete garbage, but once you get past it... (A good eek lol)
The Legacy-Probably my new all time favorite Maiden song. It's insane. Just..Pure awesome.

I prefer OotS because it doesn't have an annoying ska section, and the solo is by Adrian instead of Roy-Z. Also, the acoustic guitar in the background works really well.
LoL is slightly weak, but the chorus is pretty anthemic. I agree with everything you say though.
Also, The Three Amigos were on the front cover of Guitarist magazine this month. It's pretty cool article: probably nothing you didn't know about the band before (if you've read RttH and been on here for the past six months or so). Some interesting pictures of them in their old days and some stuff on gear, naturally.
Also, Adrian has some intersting things to say about modern bands, most of which I think he's dead on with:
Q: Do you hear Maiden's influence in younger metal bands?
A: [His son] plays me bands like Atreyu and they have guitar solos, which is good. A lot of these bands have got the attitude and great sounds, but it would be nice to hear a bit more playing and actual singing from some of them. [I agree so much with that: Trivium, take note -P]
Q: Do you think there's enough melody in modern metal?
A: No. I think it relies too much on shock value, which is great to a point [not really -P] but for longevity you have to have something more. But even Slipknot have done that - their Wait And Bleed is a very melodic song, for example. [/me slaps H with a flipper]

Atreyu & Slipknot
Anyway, i took a break from my AMOLAD listening to listen to 3 tracks off of SSoaSS (the prophecy, only the good die young, and clairvoyant) and to be honest it made me really sad. To know that maiden will never sound like that again :(
The Pilgrim is starting to really grow on me though, i love the 'turn water into wine' part.
Quiksilver26
09-21-2006, 10:12 AM
Well the direction that they'll take on the next album remains to be seen.. but I agree with you, it'd be amazing if for their last ( hopefully not  ) album they created something more like in their golden years and just show up every single other band out now :)
didn't steve say he'd changed his mind, and that it won't be their last (like originally planned 15 maiden albums), because they're so happy with the way this one came out, they just want to keep doing it.
And i know i'm a bit biased but to me AMOLAD really does show up every other band out there.
Quiksilver26
09-21-2006, 10:40 AM
Yeah i'm pretty sure Steve had always thought of them releasing 15 albums then quitting, but recently he said something about just seeing how it goes or whatever... They wouldn't be in their right minds to quit any time soon =\
AMOLAD does completely crush everything else out right now too! unless of course they release another album this year :amaze:

Yeah but I don't like the 80's synths so I'm cool with that sound never returning.
Anyway, next money batch I'll get AMoLaD, because I couldn't decide whether get this or Amputechture. Amputechture won because I didn't buy Frances The Mute (when it was cheap ergh student lol), but I'm not feeling bad at all for choosing it. Now, when it comes to 10,000 days...

Hmm, yea this new album isn't really like their older ones. Most of these songs are epic like, they start slow, and then later gets heavy. Most of their older songs just started heavy and hard. lol. Actually this album is alot like Tool ones imo structure wise, although I like Maiden songs way better for many different reasons. It definetely doesn't sound like DoD either though, except couple of first songs.

Such a dead thread lately.. =\
Anyway, the NA tour kicks off in a couple of days, I'm sure there are users who are going to it, I seriously can't wait. It's like 14 days or something until they come here, I don't think I was even this excited before the first time I saw them :).

Yeah, to the like 3 cities they are playing for their NA "tour".
It saddens me that maiden really dont give a crap about touring the US and Cananda. And the fact that AMOLAD has totally surpased BNW and DoD in sales makes it even worse.

Good stuff.
Out of the shadows has really grown on me. I really love how Bruce sings the verses.
It's really good. My favorites are still TROBB, BTATS, These Colours Don't Run, The Longest Day, and FTGGOG.
-The Frank
10-05-2006, 12:47 AM
I find TROBB is one of the weaker tracks on the album. Extremely fun to play though.
The legacy still hasnt caught my attention yet. But i have defiantely warmed up to lord of light though
I hated TROBB when it was released as a single, but love it within the context of the album.
-The Frank
10-05-2006, 12:52 AM
I liked it as a single when it first was released. But i think i just over listened to it :(.
I was also thinking the other day that the intro to TROBB (the little guitar solo thing) sounds like something that could be on SiT
Hmmm. Yeah, I can see that.

I just got back from seeing them.
They played AMOLAD in its entirety.
I don't remember everything they played but here are some.
Fear of the Dark
The Evil that men do.
2 minutes to midnight
Hallowed be Thy Name.
A tank popped out at the back of the stage behind the drumset in the middle of 2MTM.
No trooper =/, and the set seemed kind of short because of the playing of AMOLAD. But still, they are amazing and remain my favorite band.

Pretty nice, but it would have been better if they had some of the older ones in there.
Also 2M2M looks really out of place on that setlist.
And seriously, who would have thouight that they wouldnt include RTTH and NOTB, that kind of shocked me.
Apocalyptic Raids
10-05-2006, 10:51 AM
I think that's pretty lame. I would be very annoyed if I was seeing Iron Maiden for the first time and didn't get The Number of The Beast, Run To The Hills and The Trooper.
But I like that they're finally changing it up.
-The Frank
10-05-2006, 11:04 AM
Exactly.
But like i said, they should've included a bit more classics or songs they dont often play live.

The Wicker Man
Revelations
The Clansman
Phantom of the Opera
Iron Maiden
Looks good to me.

w00t! 2MTM, TETMD, FOTD and HBTN, as well as all the album? i always wanted them to play TETMD and 2MTM the first time i saw them :D
although i'd rather have them play some stuff off Somewhere in Time than all of AMOLAD, but still, they're gonna pwn live.
NP: Different World (on my awesome new speaker set)
i love the philosophical aspect of this song.
Ugh, i can't say i'm to fond of this set list, FotD and Iron Maiden really could have been changed to rarer songs :(
But at least they changed some songs. I was expecting:
AMOLAD
FOTD
The Trooper
RTTH
NOTB
HBTN

To be perfectly honest...Every song on the setlist is awesome, and I will enjoy (FotD was one of the big ones I was hoping for).
But for a band with such a massive back catolouge (full of awesome songs) to play the entirety of a new album is ludicrous, 5 or 6 songs, I would have understood. I would have hoped for a better setlist for my first time seeing Maiden.
Seriously though, its still going to pwn the face off me and I'm still hella excited to go see them.
I think it's perfectly legitimate. They have a new album, which they are promoting. It's not their responsibility to play everyone's favorite songs every time they tour.

very good point. plus, they tried playing Charlotte the Harlot on the last tour and swapped it for Wrathchild, as too many of the fans didn't know CTH
Wow. I would love CTH. When I saw them last summer, at my show they decided to swap Wrathchild with Murders in the Rue Morgue, which was a nice surprise.
they did both at mine
they came on while a tape of The Ides Of March was playing, and launced into Murders... at the drum-roll part, just before the vocals start.

Quiksilver26
10-05-2006, 05:46 PM
That was just the set for the first show too, so there's a possibility of the setlist changing slightly. They could be waiting to see everyone's reactions to each of the songs. I would kind of like to see maybe 1 or 2 more songs added at any rate though.
but remember that the new album is 72 minutes long, or something like that, so that limits how many others they can do...
MrConeman
10-05-2006, 06:16 PM
Even with that though, that is a pretty short set list tbh.
I was just coming to post exactly what Quiksilver said, It occoured to me that maybe they played all of the songs at the first gig as a sort of launch of the tour special, and mainly to see which songs go down the best so they can keep them for the rest of the tour.
A long shot, but I have no doubt the set will change at least a little.
it will almost certainly change a bit, but when they first finished the album, they did say that they thought the album was good enough to be performed all the way through live.
either way, it'll be an awesome show, i can't wait. it'll be my 3rd time seeing them.
Quiksilver26
10-05-2006, 09:15 PM
Yeah, it'll be my 2nd time only, I think i'm even more pumped than before first show though :). I've seen so many people complaining about the setlist.. but in reality it's a fricken tour to support the album. And the album just so happens to crush all in its path.
With that said, I also cannot wait for a Golden Years tour :D
Interesting set list for sure. I was expecting the whole album, but the other songs seem a little unorthodox. Why not:
Hallowed
Iron Maiden
The Trooper
Paschendale
Infinite Dreams
And yeah, Out of the Shadows does seem out of place.
Quiksilver26
10-05-2006, 09:38 PM
Paschendale would be the greatest blessing ever received... anyway, I just read a post on another board (the official IM forum actually) from people who were at the first show. According to them, Bruce announced that they'd be playing the entire AMOLAD album as a special treat... so MrConeman's assumptions about it being a tour kick off type of deal could be right on.
Or maybe as a special treat to North American fans for this tour? Or for everyone on this tour?
-The Frank
10-06-2006, 12:57 AM
If we all remember the DoD tour, they actually played more songs of their album, but since the crowd reaction wasnt very good, they changed songs out for like wrathchild and stuff.
My first maiden gig was extremely short (50 minutes anyone?) so they just went though all the classics which wasnt bad.
it went like
1.Intro/ides of march (missed this came late)
2.Wrathchild (missed this came late)
3.the trooper (cam right when bruced yelled 'THE TROOOOOOOPER! when of the best experiences of my life)
4.revelations (i didnt know this song at the time so missed out badly)
4 1/2. Burce yelled about corporate america for a while.
5. Phantom of the opera (amazing, never thought i would get to hear it)0
6.Run to the hills
7. Number of the beast (niko threw one of his drumsticks into the corwd durring this song which was kind of un-usual)
8.Hallowed be thy name
9.Iron maiden (my first time seeing eddie :extremelyhappy:)
-break-
10.running Free
11. Sactuary
They blew me away.
I had that set, except exchange Wrathchild with Murders in the Rue Morgue. Indeed, they were amazing.

I'm insanely happy that I'm getting to see them. After wanting to see them for 15 years and not being able to, this is by far my most anticipated concert in a very long time, if not ever. BUT...I am going to be disappointed if they don't play their classics. I know they've got a new album out that they're promoting, but seriously. 99% of the people going to this tour will already be familiar with the band. Most will have already heard their new album. And honestly...do Iron Maiden really need to promote themselves? They're one of the biggest names in the history of rock and metal. I guess I just think that they should play more of their classics. Obviously throw in a few new songs, but don't skimp on the rest of the playlist. Oh well. I'm still geeked about going and I'll still love the show I just really hope they do play more of their classics.

For those of you going to see Iron Maiden on this tour...
Don't get your hopes up.
At my show (and the other two shows from this tour), they played 15 songs
10 of which are from A Matter of Life and Death.
Yes, they are great. BUT, They didn't play:
The Trooper
Aces High
Number of the Beast
Run to the Hills
and many more. They played 2 Minutes to Midnight, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Fear of the Dark, and two others I don't remember.
It was awesome, but don't go in expecting some awesome old stuff.
We already knew about the setlist.

Paul looks so wierd now. If he wasn't introduced as Paul Di'anno, I wouldn't have believed that it was actually him. He certainly still can sing though :)

i love the "enter hell's gate" bit, Bruce sounds so evil on that part  and on all the verses really.
one of my favourite songs on the new album. i just downloaded the bootleg as well, so i'll give that a listen soon.
The bootleg is pretty enjoyable.
i'm printing off a load of lecture notes, so i'm going to de-compress it and listen in a few minutes. are all the tracks tagged?

I would download the bootleg but I don't want to ruin the live experience of the current tour (that and my computer is totally out of memory)
EDIT: Page 1000 claimed
gah, you bastard.
:p
i know i'll still love seeing them live, it's just because i'm curious as to how the songs will turn out live.
Yes the tracks are tagged.
goodie. just putting them on my mp3 player, then i'll give them a listen :)
EDIT: just put it on now, i love that they use Mars from The Planets as the intro piece :)
EDIT2: onto the end part of Brighter Than..., IMO the songs are coming out much better live. :)

That part is one of my favorite parts on the whole album :)
Could anyone possibly upload the boot to YSI or something, megaupload keeps saying that there is not enough ports for my country :(

It's all about the second verse for me:
" The rising dead, faces bloated torn
They are relieved, the living wait their turn
Your number's up, the bullet's got your name
You still go on, to hell and back again
Valhalla waits, valkyries rise and fall
The warrior tombs lie open for us all
A ghostly hand reaches through the veil
Blood and sand, we will prevail"

^ Yeah, maiden have really surpassed themselves with lyrics this album. Bruce really knows how to write 'em!

Yep.
Some amazingly good riffs as well.
Most of the ones from TROBB, as well as the counter-riff behind the bit where Bruce is singing "For the greater good of God!" come to mind.
It's just a damn good album overall i can't fault it in any way, even live it sounds fantastic :)
i reckon it sounds better live, the vocals definitely do.

I finally caved in and downloaded A Matter Of Life and Death this weekend. I was trying to hold out until I had some money to actually buy it, but if that's 98% of what they're playing on this tour I figure I better at least know the songs. I'm still going to buy it when I get some money though. It's decent. I don't think it's nearly as good as some reviews I've seen have made it sound. It's definately not "The best album by Iron Maiden since Number Of The Beast" as so many have said. It's still good though.
Exactly one week from this time I'll be almost to Detroit to see them. :D
i have to wait 2 months 7 days :( but it should be worth it :)

Yeah I'm taking a half day at work. I figure if I leave work at around 11:30, by the time I get home, get changed, pick up the guy that's going with me and get on the road it'll be somewhere between 12:30 and 1:00. About a 3 hour drive puts me in line sometime between 3:30 and 4:00. Plenty of time to stop somewhere and get a case of beer to drink in line before we get in. And I'm taking the following day off work altogether so I'll be able to sleep in a little bit since I probably won't make it home much before 3:00 in the morning.
Sounds like a fun day Legions. A couple concerts I went last year to required 5+ hours of transportation. I got home at 6am for both of them. It was fun until about 4am. :p
i have to wait 2 months 7 days :( but it should be worth it :)
