I convinced my band to learn Fear of the Dark finally :D They started learning their parts today and me and the rythem guitarist already know our parts. We plan on learning it and saving it to close up our next Battle of the Bands with.
Besides that I really just wanted to save this thread and it took me forever to find it again.
yeh, it sucks that this thread is getting a little slowish

did? what do you mean did? they aint done yet!!! :D
a good point.
yeh, adrian's lado on live after death is my joint favourite maiden guitar - the other being adrian's les paul from the wicker man video
The Mercenary
08-20-2004, 08:21 AM
i havent seen the wicker man video....ill have to try fish it out..
if he used a les paul on that track, why did he change to a strat for the live rock in rio?
i have no idea... which is a shame, as it's a bloody nice les paul
it's not the sanest of videos... it's got bruce playing with a giant ballon, eddie hypnotizing a guy, some teenage maiden fans going crazy and human sacrifice

^ just the kind of stuff i like!!
are there any plans to release any more of thier stuff from dance of death? i know they dont tend to release many off of any album, but wildest dreams and rainmaker did quite well, for a 30 year old metal act!
i think they got 6th with WD and 14th with rain didnt they (uk charts anyway...)
yeh, i think so.
they normally only release 2 songs from each album:
Running Free, Sanctuary
Purgatory, Twilight Zone
Run To The Hills, Number Of The Beast
The Trooper, Flight Of Icarus
Aces High, Two Minutes To Midnight
Stranger In A Strange Land, Wasted Years
Etc.
They should've released Face In The Sand and Montsegur... but they're probably too long for radio.
The Mercenary
08-20-2004, 09:53 AM
i would have thought they might do journeyman, just because its so mch mellower (is that a word?!?) than the usual stuff, but yea, probably too long for radio.
eletric journeyman > acoustic journeyman

you cant go wrong with any maiden albums, but try and avoid 'The X Factor' and 'Virtual XI', they are relavtively good albums, but with a weaker singer, at least avoid until you become an avid fan!!
Try Somewhere in Time (this was the first maiden album to incorporate synths and keyboards, which is something they stuck with for a few albums)
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son - Widely thouht of as being the 'best' or at least better album, again, some of the song feel more radio friendly 'can i play with madness' 'the clariovet' and 'the evil that men do'
Number of the beast - i recommend this one, its whrn bruce dickinson first joined and the maiden sound really got its feet off the floor, classics like 'number of the beast' 'hallowed be thy name' and 'run to the hills'
brave new world - one of the best maiden albums, after 4 somewhat more disenchanted efforts, this is an excellent album, sounds so fresh, and will beat the rap out of any nu-metal act around today
dance of death - thier latest offering (2004), and an excellent one at that, you may have been dissapointed with 'St Anger', but this is truly a sensational album, they havent strayed from their roots and original sound one bit, not quite a masterpeice, possibly for one below par track 'gates of tommorow'
Then there are the two live albums, which i any every maiden fan will recommed, 'Live after Death' (widely though of as being the best live metal album EVER!!) and 'Rock In Rio' - two supurb albums which any maiden fan could not live without!!

all you need to do is avoid virtual XI and X Factorm they are the only bad ones, the rest are all good. but the best are the ones with bruce singing, so the earlier ones arent quite up the godlike standards that involve bruce.
er, there are more live albums than that
Live After Death
Maiden England
A Real Live One
A Real Dead One
Live At Donnington (my personal favourite)
Rock In Rio
Beast Over Hammersmith (part of Eddie's Archives)
BBC Sessions (part of Eddie's Archives)
Live At The Rainbow (Video Only)
Maiden Japan (EP)
Live!! + One (the first live album, with the original guitarist duo of Murray and Dennis Straton)
Behind The Iron Curtain (Video Only)
Raising Hell (Video/DVD Only)

I know great song. I was talking about before Bruce came along....
in urchin, dave's band before maiden, adrian only got in because he said he was a singer (as they did not need more guitarists). then dave left for maiden, adrian took up guitar, adrian joined maiden, adrian left maiden (just before the sound house tapes, hence only1 guitarist). tony parsons joined, tony parsons left, dennis straton joined, recorded s/t album, straton joined praying mantis, adrian re-joined maiden in time to record "killers"

ashman

Well Dave Murray often plays a fender strat, sometimes a jackson (don't know the model or anything)
Adrian plays a strat, used to use an Ibanez destroyer, and a gibson goldtop, I think they are hes favourite guitars
Janick uses some poor training guitar with no frets (well there has to be some reason for his sloppy playing)
Steve uses fender Precision 1 bass.
Thats just a quick list, I'm sure GurS will tell you every instrument ever played by Iron Maiden, that guy always surprises me with how quick he learned everything about maiden....

hmmm... steve use mainly one Fender Precision bass(the white one with red and blue binding..), but he has like 7 of them, you can se him use them in different cocerts..(like a real live dead one he uses an red...) But his main bass is the, and always have been the white (1971 i belive) P Bass(it was the blue sparkle before, and before that the black one used at Live at rainbow...) when it got repaintet the first time he changed the bridge and Pickups, and now all of his Basses are equiped with Badass II Bridge and Seymour Duncan Pickups ... :p He also have been seen with Lado Unicorn(Aces High Video) and an Ibanez Roadster II(Run to the hills video..) he is also supposed to own an Gibson Thunderbird... hell, the guy probaly owns 'kin lots of basses...
by the way, anyonknows about an place wich sells the colour blue sparkle? :p
I've always wanted to get my bass painted like his black and white chequred one.

i think he have two painted like that... or he have changed the the neck on it... becouse thoose pics i see of a black/White checkered one is from 1990 - 92.. and then it had an Rosewood Fretboard... on later pics it have an Maple Fretboard... i think its an bass from 59... atleast it says so in Live After death... but realy when i see the headstock(due the shape of fenders logo on later than 70's basses..) itr seems like its from the 80's until now...

I was wondering how does Blaze compare to there other singers being I have never heard him.
The two albums (The X Factor, Virtual XI) with him singing on got, and still get a cold reception from most fans. They arent bad albums, as you can tell from the live 'sign of the cross' and 'the clasnsman' from the rock in rio DVD, but after 7 studio albums with Bruce, the change wasnt hailed as good as Bruce had kind of made the maiden voice his own.
Di'annio from the fisrt two albums was an excellent singer. But Bruce is, and i dont doubt, will always be the voice of maiden

Topic time: What's the deal with Iron Maiden and movies? I don't know if they've ever been in any, but they've definitely been mentioned.
Like in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" when the king says "Put them in the iron maiden!" And Bill and Ted go "Sweet!" And at the end where Bill announces the Wyld Stallyns as opening for Maiden in their demo video.
Also, I think the stoner older brother in "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" had a Maiden poster.

alright, wich iron maiden guitarist made you wanna start guitar? for me its janick(the blood brothers solo, im realy an bassist, but i realy want to be able to play that solo :P) im on the hunt for an guitar to buy after i get an fender vintage Precision Bass, an repaint, new pickguard and bridge for it(yes, the "Live After death" Bass also known as the 1982 - 1990 colour:p) i was thinkin of an fender mex. strat maple fretboard guitar and maidenify it :p

erm...it would have to be Adrian Smith, I dunno what it was about him...but he compelled me to pick a guitar and start making several guitar noises. Infinite Dreams was the song that made me start guitar (bass as well, I love the bass line :p).
Janicks solo on Blood brothers is surprisingly easy. But janicks delivery isn't too good, I think if adrian played it, it would sound 100 times better... (janick hasn't heard of vibrato, and adrian is the king of vibrato)

Being an avid guitar (and bass) player, i easily find Adrian to be the most creative and well rounded of the three boys in Maiden. Janick's lead in blood brothers is fantastic, but his "wasting love" solo is my favourite by him. What also puts Adrian on such a high perch for me is his ability to write such incredible songs, something Dave contributes less to. Janick's strenth in the band is song/riff writing, not leads. While Adrian's strenth is in both lead playing and song writing, hes always been my favourite member of Iron Maiden and i can't stress enough how important he is to the bands sound/success.

i agree with that. Davey has been there since day one. I look at it like, where would the band be without a certain member. Musically his solos are fantastic and vital to the sound, but his contributions to writing songs has always been very limited, where Bruce is not only the voice that gained them a whole new audience over Paul's, but he has penned many of the bands most ledgenadry tracks.

Hmm, that wasn't the point he made at all... He did make a good point: Priest's solos are way better. :D .... and they are. :D
i got into Maiden first and belive Maiden are superior in all aspect, including leads. KK espically dosent have what it takes to stand up to Dave and Adrian, Janick id say so. Glenn is a very very well rounded lead player and id say has the most musical muscle solo's out of all of them, but i wouldnt say i think his leads are any where as pationate and experimental as Adrian and Davey's where their solos are alot more flavorful and fit the music much more. Iron Maiden in all aspects ive found to out perform Judas Priest (who are one of my top favourite bands by the way) espically in terms of their rhytem section. Clive and Nicko have much more original ideas than what had been presented with the majority of the Priest drummes whereas only Les Binks and Scott Travis were the only ones who i felt enhanced the music at all. Bass wise, i dont even want to chart those waters. Vocals, its even keil to every level. Both can hit'em low, and both can hit'em high. Rob and Bruce have the ability to be unforgetable frontmen and have voices that are hailed as influences to countless vocalists since the early 80's. Riffing...Priest are alot more cut and dry than Maiden are and didnt have the wonderful "tone" that Maiden have on their albums. Priest follow a basic riff formula as does Maiden, when you break it down it comes down to preference and ive always sided with Maiden's guitar riffs over Priests, they are more diverse and certainly have less filler tracks on albums (if any on most records). lyrically they are two different giants, Priest are more friendly to the average listner as Maiden's are more well researched and well thought out, i find Maiden's enchanting as Priests are more sing alongs. Solo wise, ill say it again...Glenn and Adrian have the most difficult pieces to play but it comes down to the feel, and Priest have more "solo just for the sake of soloing" ethic than Maiden do where its more "if a lead is needed than we'll use a lead, if not why bother?". Comparing two of the greatest metal bands of all time is hard, this is alot like the eternal battle of "Metallica vs Megadeth" where in this case Priest are Metallica and Maiden are Megadeth, more people are into Metallica and Priest becuase tehy are more friendly to the average listners ear, but when it comes down to it...the more diehard and dedicated fans are more into Megadeth and Maiden. Id say with the exception of slayer and kiss, there arent any fans who are as diehard about a band as the Maiden fans are and i stand by what i feel. Iron Maiden are a superior musical talent and their songwriting has proven it worldover, making them in what id say as the most well respected metal band worldover.

I can usually tell them apart pretty good (Adrian does most of Revelations, right?), but there was a website with a quote from Steve Harris that says "If you're keeping track of solos, this one's Davey" or something to that effect.
FrailandBedazzled1979

just watch the video lol.
how i tell them appart is by their tone. Davey uses his neck pickup with is naturally (on a stratocaster) more low tones and he has a very legatto style of playing, more constant notes with alot of hammer-ons and fewer notes are picked. Adrian's is the most wide ranged, he can play the best speed metal solos but also incorporates alot of bluesy licks (if you a guitarist you know what i mean!) into his solos, he also finger taps more often and uses the wah at times. Janick is the sloppiest and generally has a more rough and strait picked tone to his. after hearing years of Maiden telling them appart gets as easy as parents telling their triplet children appart hehe.

other good songs on the album are monstegur, no more lies, dance of death and rainmaker.
i dont really care for the firsat track (wildest dreams) though
dance of death is very good... some say better than BNW. the last solo on icarus is davey... i always thought it was adrian but the video says otherwise... maybe he's just using his bridge pick up.

When the land was swamp and caves were home
In an age when prize possession was fire
To search for landscapes men would roam.
Then the tribes they came to steal their fire
And the wolves they howled into the night
As they fought a vicious angry battle
to save the power of warmth and light.

Quest for Fire is helluh cheesy. I cringe at the lyrics to that song. Well, what do you expect from a filler?

Piece of Mind is awesome except for Where Eagles Dare. Except maybe like 2 minutes into it.
Does anyone else find some songs are ruined by their chorus? for instance Blood brothers, brave new world and no more lies all great songs, but for me the chorus lets the song down.
the chorus of blood brothers is great.

All three songs have great a great chorus. But I am sick of Brave New World. I would much rather hear dream of mirrors.

The Brave New World chorus is quite sweet on Rock in Rio.

I love the choruses or however you say it.
But anyway today I got Dance Of the Death and I personally think its better than Brave New World even though that is a nasty cd.

I love the chorus on Bllod Brothers, BNW and no more lies, its really amazing live in the pit, great atmosphere. The whole crowd is chanting "A BRAVE NEW WORLD!! IN A BRAVE NEW WORLD!!" and "NO MORE LIES!! NO MORE LIES!!" 'tis 'kin awesome.
how bout the apparition and fear is the key? they are sins against nature and crimes against humanity.

Gurs, I pretend those songs are not by Maiden, but by steves evil twin...stephen
Maiden are supposed to be releasing a live version of DoD on CD. At the moment there are rumours in magzines (metal hammer) saying that they will be releasing a new studio album in 2006/7...

blood brothers is one of maidens best songs, how can you say anything like that?
jannick's solo on blood brothers was the first maiden solo i learnt to play on guitar
unrelated, i reckon adrian's divebomb during the chorus of "aces high" is the best divebomb in a song ever.

I know its a great song, one of my favourites but repeating "we're blood brothers" 4 times as a chorus doesn't really appeal to me.

I just felt like saying Nicko is god.
so did i.... so i made it my title...
so, about that dive bombing thing, who agrees?
other random thoughts that have come to my head recently: dave's the most mellow one in the band, adrian put on a lot of weight during his 12 years of absence, nicko's hair looked better brown, bruce with short hair > bruce with long hair, jannick looks like a tramp on the back of the FOTD sleeve, and steve should use his signature bass more often.

Jannick looks evil but hes cool. And ya Adrian does look a little more flabby. And Dave always seems to be smiling.

And what do you mean by dive bombing.
Does anyone else get overcome with how good the part in "afraid to shoot strangers" is at around 2:45 when that guitar riff kicks in. God I ****ing love that.

Yeh it's great, but what about the bit at 3:05 in Dance Of Death when the other guitars join in on the first main electric part...OH ****ING YES!!! :D

I think it's when the guitarist slides his fretting hand slowly down the strings to make it sound like something is falling from the sky. It's very audible in "Welcome to the Jungle" too.
