Actually, no.
Angel of Retribution had a few quality tracks on it, but it was nowhere near as good as Screaming for Vengance, Painkiller or British Steel.
A matter of life and Death is one of Maiden's best albums.

Hell yes. Thats my thoughts exactly, this album is amazing I can't wait to see some of it live in December :)
"For the passion, for the glory, for the memories, for the money, your a soldier, for your country, whats the difference, all the same"
That part is so damn good.
I'm still not ready to give it a rating, because right now it would be 5/5. After another several more listens I'll do it.

My favorites are TROBB, BTATS, and For the Greater Good of God.

I don't remember if i've posted this before or not... (i think i have though) but I love The Legacy, it's just so epic. Actuallly, Longest Day too.. and For The Greater Good of God. Actually I just realized I can't just listen to a single song from the album, it always ends up in me listening to the entire thing .
Damnit, I left out the Longest Day. I always leave out something when making a quick list.

The longest day is probably my favourite on there now, it's so urgent and desperate.
Although my favourite moment on the album is that riff at 1:42 on Lord of Light.
'The Pilgrim' and 'For the Greater Good of God' are my favourite so far.

I don't find the Pilgrim to be one of the best on the album...maybe because all the songs after it are just amazing.

I haven't heard the new album yet (only listened to the 3 sample tracks), but i'm suprised that the amount of epic tracks aren't starting to bore anyone. I'm guessing they must be pretty well written, since you guys seem to adore them.
I like The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, but Brighter Than a Thousand Suns seemed rather standard. On the other hand Different World really blew me away because it was more of a dynamic song. Though I really like DoD and BNW, I'd wish that Maiden starts writting more songs ala Different World and cut back a little on the epic tracks.

According to a posting on the IRON MAIDEN fan site MaidenFans.com, MAIDEN recorded four B-sides during the sessions for their new album, "A Matter of Life and Death" — to be used on an upcoming single, currently expected to be "Different Worlds". The four extra songs that were allegedly recorded are as follows:
ZZ TOP – "Tush"
THIN LIZZY – "Angel of Death"
DEEP PURPLE – "Space Truckin'"
FOCUS – "Hocus Pocus"
There has been no official word yet on where these cover versions will end up or whether all of them will be released at all.
Thanks to Blabbermouth.net for teh info.

right, first time i've been on in ages, and here's my thoughts on the new album:
i like it, but for me it just doesn't live up to DoD, as i'm not a fan of the guitar and bass intro style of song that seems to dominate the album. however, Different World, These Colours Don't Run and The Longest Day i like a lot. :)

Thats what i was worried about. So far from the songs ive heard (TRoBB,DW) its a lot less happy toned then Dod was. ANd that was what i loved about Dod. It doesnt seem like there is going to be another rainmaker on AMOLAD, but i havent actually listened to the album yet :p so my thoughts could just be supid.

Yeah, well. Happy toned isn't what I wanted, and I got what I wanted, which was a mature album.
Maiden could have released thirty albums of happy "I'm going to war and kicking some arse" albums, and I guess that would have been cool, but here they actually released some mature lyrical material, and a more worldweary tone, which is much better for me.

Agreed, the lyrics in this album are a lot more thought out IMO, the choruses especially ie. They don't just repeat the title of the song :p

all they're stuff i pretty melodic, so picking a starting place isn't that easy, i'd probably go for Number of the Beast, Piece of mind, Powerslave, Seventh Son...., or the new one A Matter of Life and Death, which is probably my fav.

This time last year we were all excited over Nicko letting slip that AMOLAD would be a concept album, and while it all seems to revolve around the concept of the relationship between religion and war, is there a deeper "story" to the album, that we can read into it?
Maybe.
Different World - Main character is feeling lost and without direction in his life: Don't want to be here, somewhere I'd rather be. But when I get there I might find it's not for me. Don't know what I want or where I want to be. I'm feeling more confused the more the days go by.
These Colours Don't Run - So he joins the army: For the passion, for the glory, for the memories, for the money. You're a soldier for your country what's the difference, all the same? Far away from the land of our birth, we fly a flag in some foreign earth. We sailed away like our fathers before. These colours don't run from cold bloody war.
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns - Now commited to the army, the main character is starting to see the true side of war. His side is successful, but he's starting to see how much effect it's having on the civilian landscape he's in.
The Pilgrim - Main character wants to escape the army, but there is no way out, except death. However, he is concerned, with all the atrocities he's witnessed in the name of war, that he may be judged to Hell.
The Longest Day - The tedium of war starts to set in...it gets very boring on the battlefield, as killing and watching your friends get killed becomes an accepted part of life. This all creates an ominous tension which makes time pass even more slowly.
Out Of The Shadows - The main character finally succumbs to death. Eyes are closed and death is calling, reaching out its hand.
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg - From beyond the grave guilt now starts to set in regarding his conduct during the time in the army. He feels that there is no justification for killing anybody. Not even during war. Also, he may have witnessed the deaths of many civilians and not stopped it when he could have.
For The Greater Good Of God - Main character asks himself: "If god says 'Thou shalt not kill', why are so many wars fought in his name. Now in Heaven (or maybe Hell), he has the chance to ask a warmongering 'priest'. Possibly ones who are still alive, and he can visit them from the afterlife. Maybe even the one who started the war our hero got caught up in the first place.
Lord Of Light - Not satisfied with their answers, he gives his own ideas on why man shouldn't kill man, especially not in the name of religion.
The Legacy - Warmongering priests are now on their deathbed, contemplating the legacy they left behind...
Hmm...not watertight. There's plenty of room for interpretation in the words, although I think that one pretty much matches up.
Lord Abortion
09-04-2006, 06:37 PM
I think it's more of a loose concept about War and wars fought in the name of religion.
JamJar
09-04-2006, 06:42 PM
It's definitely not a tight concept as it's been said that it's not and when you watch the DVD which comes with the deluxe edition, it's obvious that it's not. However there is definitely a running theme of war and religion
it has an overly theme yeah, conept album no, me thinks their plans changed, still might be wrong, and i don't care excellent album, wouldn't change it at all

Powerslave is considered one of their best ^^
Finally got a copy yesterday, and it is amazingly good. The only bad part is I haven't heard all the songs yet. Everytime I try to sit down and listen to music something comes up, so I am hoping no one comes wanting something from me right now because i will cut them. The Pilgrim is a little boring at start but it becomes pretty catchy and picks up speed. I love every single song I've heard so far with no exceptions.
Powerslave is highly overrated. Luc, you need to get Seventh Son.

And maybe Iron Maiden for culture references.

Of course, as with alot of music I got when I first got into metal, I wasn't that into Maiden. Now, I love them, so I think I'll check it out again.
The exact same thing happened with Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Amon Amarth, and some others.
I didn't like them when I was a metal virgin, now that I'm seasoned I love those bands. Well, I don't love CC, but I don't hate them like I used to and I enjoy them.

It's really wierd for me: as much as Iron Maiden are easily my favourite band (and have been for the past 4 years or so) I'm not really a metal-head. I listen to the occasional bit of SOAD or Metallica but I tend to find that all metal bands since 1990 aren't worth the CD they're recorded on.
I guess the pattern figures: Greenday were my favourite band for a long time (and still are my second favourite) but I'm not really that much into other punk/pop-punk...
Third favourite band is Eminem...not really into any other rap...
You see the pattern?
I don't know anyone else who's like that.

Powerslave is highly overrated. Luc, you need to get Seventh Son.
I wouldnt say that, powerslave is a great album from start to finish. There is absoltely no filler (unless you count los'fer words filler). Its a great album for anyone who hasnt listened to that much maiden. Id reccomend it more the SSoaSS for people who are new to the irons.
I personally find 'These colours don't run' to be one of the worst on the album, though it's still good.
I'm finding myself absolutely loving 'Different World' which is weird as I initially found it pretty mediocre.
I would agree that Powerslave has no filler tracks but i still find it to be highly overrated for some reason.
After nearly 2 weeks of listening to AMOLAD i still can't put it down, it is really the only thing i want to listen to now. I'm very tempted to say it is my favourite album.
Apocalyptic Raids
09-08-2006, 08:49 AM
I find Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son to be stronger overall than Powerslave. Sure, it doesn't have any tracks quite as great as Aces High or Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, but it's far more consistent in my eyes.
i think SSoaSS > Powerslave
i'd say infinate dreams, and the clairvoyant are just as strong as the best songs on PS, and the song quality is consistantly better.
jversluis88
09-08-2006, 09:09 AM
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a very underrated and not widely recognized album of Maiden's. I'd say it's one of their best along with Piece of Mind, as well as The Number of the Beast.
As far as their new stuff goes, Blaze Bayley was a disgrace to the band. Bottom line is, I don't think Maiden will ever be able to put out as powerful an album as they have in the past, they're getting old, and while any new material will most definitely be appealing to us, the Maiden fans, they're not likely to recruit new fans with new releases.
I wouldnt say that, powerslave is a great album from start to finish. There is absoltely no filler (unless you count los'fer words filler).
I consider everything but Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Powerslave, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner filler.

I'm very much like this. I'll listen to my favourite or what I consider the best artist from each genre, and I never pigeon hole myself into being nothing but a metal head, or a rock fan, or classical, or blues, or punk, or funk or whatever.
There's far to much good music out there to listen to only one single genre.
I don't think Maiden will ever be able to put out as powerful an album as they have in the past.

After a tonne of listens (by now) It's definatly one of my favourite Maiden albums, it's just...bloody well written!
There are certain songs off of Brave New World, Dance of Death, and now A Matter of Life and Death that beat ALOT of their glory day's 80's stuff, they probably will never surpass that era, but they definatly have moments on the new albums that dominate the older ones.
The song writing is so much more complex. I'm glad most others share my liking for this album
Favourite songs:
These Colors Don't Run. (Steve/Adriann/Bruce dominate lyricly on this I think)
Different World (Adriann knows how to write a solo)
The Legacy (wonderfull classical intro from Janick)
Greater Good of God (amazing solo transitions)
I really do love every track on this album, but those are my stand outs, for now. I absolutely cannot wait to see them in December! *explodes*

Really? I've always loved Back in the Village, Flash of the Blade, and Losfer Words, especially the guitar work on them. The Duellists is probably the weak spot of Powerslave for me, though.
AMOLAD is pure brilliance. I'm not sure whether or not to say it's better than some of the "classic" albums yet, but it's easily the best thing they've put out since Seventh Son, at least. Keep in mind, I was never a fan of The X Factor (asides from Sign of the Cross and Man on the Edge).

I'm hoping they change their setlist in comparison to Death On The Raod (Besides obviously adding songs from AMOLD and taking out most DoD songs), would prefer The Wickerman, Ghost Of Navigator or even Blood Brothers over Brave New World and Lord Of Flies is really replaceable. I'm extremely biased in answering this because as far as I'm concerned CoB can crawl back under whatever rock they came from and die. And I love Maiden.
Whilst trying to be as un-biased as possible, The new Maiden album, really does deserve all of its hype, its a fantastically written album, the only problem I find with it is it's production (which surprised me, because the last two albums sounded amazing) but even still, it works, alot of the songs sound cool when raw like that, so in a word, yes. Buy it.

I love the production on AMOLAD. It's not "mushy" and the drums aren't too loud, like Brave New World and Dance of Death. With the choice to skip mastering, I think Kevin and Steve found something that works extremely well.

The drums definatly sound better on AMOLAD, I give it that. But the lead guitars dont cut through the mix quite aswell as on BNW or DoD I dont think, and I also agree that Bruce is a touch too loo in the mix. To be honest, it really depends on what you're looking for and what CoB album you want to pick up. If you're okay with more epic tracks, that take a few listens to fully appreciate before you get hooked on them, then go with the new maiden, but if you want something more fast-paced that is packed with tons of melodies, then go for early Bodom (haven't listened to their more recent albums).

1. Please don't take the internet too seriously.
2. The X-Factor marked a point in the Band's career where alot of bad things were happening to the band and Steve in particular, the dark tone and lack of energy you percieve is a very good thing to me, it's much more introverted, sparked by that magnificent vocal performance from Blaze, it's easily a far, far better album than the previous 2. Which really do sound tired, Bruce doesn't sound brilliant, and the arrival of Blaze on the X-Factor gives the band a much-needed kick up the arse from the frankly poor-quality albums by the standards of Maiden that are No Prayer and Fear of the Dark.
3. Brave New world and AMOLAD are magnificent albums, true, although DOD is a little lacking in a new direction and inginuity, apart from Paschendale, Journeyman, and The title track, it is a little difficult to see anything other than admittedly great, Maiden.
4. Maiden have been the best band on the face of the earth for the past 25+ years.

So apparently Nicko uses his gong in two tracks on AMOLOD. I haven't been listening out for it, anyone know the two tracks he uses it on?

I definately remember hearing a gong somewhere. I think it was on FTGGOG but i'm not certain.

Buy it.
What's wrong with the production? It isn't thick, but Maiden's sound shouldn't be thick.
EDIT:
I'm thinking of buying the album, is it worth it to get the bonus DVD edition?

Yeah, probably, it's not like you'll pay much more.
My only problem with the production is that sometimes Bruce's vocals should be higher in the mix.

I see.
I'm waiting to buy the new Mastodon first, and then I'll see what I feel like doing.

Blood Mountain is amazing.. but if you like Maiden in the slightest, you'll wanna pick up AMOLAD as soon as you can :thumb:.

The production isn't bad at all. I just prefer the production on Brave New World and Dance of Death, this one is more raw, and that's cool, I just prefer the clarity of those other two. As mentioned Bruce is a bit low in the mix a few times, and some of the lead guitar work doesn't cut through the mix so well. All in all it's still nicely produced.
Not enough memorable guitar solos is my only problem with it, other than the standard repetitive song structure criticism.
LOVE the album though.

I like the fact that it sounds like Maiden records all their stuff in real time, instead of recording certain instrument tracks at certain times.
I also like how, even in this day where you can get an album to have crystal quality, they don't overproduce it at all.

Yeah, it needs to be raw and live, otherwise it wouldn't seem right.

I heard they record AMOLAD straight from the studio or something?
As opposed to in the ocean?
Right, so, shocking stuff:
Interview with the three amigos in this month's Total Guitar.
AND I QUOTE:
Reader's question: Have you ever thought about giving Eddie a girlfriend?
H: "No, we never thought about gettin him a girlfriend, like some kind of scantily clad corpse..."
Davey: "He's always been a single guy. Life on the road is what he loves. Come to think of it, maybe he's a bit suspect..."
H: "What, you think he's gay? Eddie's coming out! There's your exclusive, guys!"
EDDIE'S GAY!
Didn't see that one coming.

What about Charlotte?
Doesn't the From Here To Eternity sleeve show Charlotte crying over a note which says "To Charlotte. Love Eddie", or something along those lines.
I also have the feeling that somewhere in the Live At Donnington version, there's a lyric "Charlotte and Eddie make quite a pair" or something like that.
Eddie isn't as innocent as he seems!
He's BI!

Nah Eddie is like the guy everyone knows that is always rocking but really wants to get a lady, but he can't because he's too hardcore...
<_<
>_>
And when he does he gets a girl that stabbed him in the back and now they are friends...
<_<

On a related note... Live at Donnington.

I believe you are thinking of the 'twilight zone' cover.
Yeh, it's twilight zone cover. He's also got a buxom lady with her arms around him on the "BYDTTS" cover.
But that was, like, 15 years ago. He may have come to terms with it by now...

That is the 'women in uniform' cover i was talking about. And about FotD, un-fortunately there is no where we can view the alternate cover which is why it would be cool if he included it in his book.

EMI press release...
Metal legends IRON MAIDEN'S new album ‘A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH’ has not only been released to enormous critical acclaim across the globe but has also resulted in some of their highest chart placings ever. In addition to their Number One chart debut on the Billboard Pan-European Chart the album has now debuted at no.9 on the Billboard USA Chart on their US-label Sanctuary Records and at no.2 in Canada.
This is the band's first ever US Top 10 entry in their long and illustrious history and a remarkable achievement, this being their 14th studio album. The album is also No.1 in the US Independent Album Chart. It has even crashed in at No.4 in the official album chart in India which is far and away the highest placing any heavy rock act has ever achieved in that country.
Band founder Steve Harris comments; 'We really enjoyed the process of making this record and were delighted with the reaction. It’s very gratifying that our fans all over the world seem to agree by supporting us so strongly. We are now very much looking forward to the forthcoming tour and intend to play live as much of the album as we feel works in the set. This tour will be very different to the last one in terms of the songs we play and we will very much enjoy the challenge of playing this new material live.'
Manager Rod Smallwood adds; 'This is great news for the band, especially – finally - a Top 10 US Billboard entry. During the 80s we had six straight million-plus selling Platinum records and all of these would have been at least Top 10 under Soundscan with three or four probably debuting at No 1. Having said that though we are very pleased to finally make it and this, along with great sales all over the world and number one in Europe, really is a testament to Maiden's and Metal's ever increasing popularity. We very much look forward to starting our World Tour in the States and Canada in early October and if ticket sales are anything to go by it will be quite an event for our fans over there.'
Maiden's Top 10 US debut comes hot on the heels of the band's No.1 album in Europe on Billboard’s pan - European chart with nine No 1 and eighteen Top 5 chart entries in Europe alone. First week sales in the UK were also at their highest since 1990. In just the first week the new album has shipped over a million copies Worldwide and impacted on the charts pretty well everywhere in the World.

Thats SO awesome how well this album is doing, well bloody deserved, Steve also seems to have just shed some light on the new setlist, looks to not be all of AMOLAD, but most likely a good chunk of it.
