I think the tunes on the blaze albums are good, but the vocals are nowhere near the quality of bruces, my other problem with blaze was he couldn't sing the classic tunes like the trooper i just don't think he has the range, but maybe the live versions i've heard he's been a bit off.
As for maiden t's Somewhere in time, aces high, killers, piece of mind, dance of death, death on the road, i was there for clive.

Just remember, the music would have been the same with or without bruce. Steve wrote those songs based on the experiences he was going though at the time. The experiences made the x factor dark not blaze, remember that.

Hey, this is my first post in the Maiden thread. I'm a huge Maiden fan, and lately I've been listening to Fear Of The Dark. One thing that really strikes me about Maiden is that I find that changes in tempo in some of the songs on that album are very ... umm ... abrupt. Not really smooth at all. I feel they have improved that on Brave New World though.

I like them better live because those abrupt tempo changes really get the crowd going alot easier than some other bands do. I like the general Maiden sound too, the guitar harmonies really work for me.

As for Blaze, I'm not very keen on him, but thats just from hearing one song: Virus, so my opinion is probably not very valued regarding that. Haven't heard any of his solo stuff either.

Bruce's solo work is good. He's got a great voice, with alot of range and power. Balls to Picasso is a great album

* Iron Maiden Recording Diary - April 29, 2006 *

Greetings - winging my way to Germany to go and see the last show in Joe Bonamassa's European tour in Lorsch, Germany tonight. Had another very productive week with Maiden, and some hedonistic nights out with long-time Maiden photographer, Ross Halfin, but that's another story!!

Mixed another two songs this week - the first (and #8 on the album) is one of my favorite mixes so far, it's almost 10 minutes long and sounds huge and very cinematic and I am very happy with it. The lads came in and 'Arry says that's the way he thinks Maiden should sound - and wished he could remix some older material - but I think older stuff is to be celebrated because of it's chronological perspective, and should be left alone! Wing Commander Biggles rushed in on Monday to pick up a CD, as he was piloting a commercial flight to India later that day and wanted to listen to some mixes, and got back on Wednesday after a visit to the Taj Mahal and is ecstatic about the album's sound. I'm sure all you anoraks out there will find plenty of stuff to keep the bulletin boards and forums on fire for a while to come!!!

Adrian was in and played a killer solo over Song #9, sounding a little like Trevor Rabin meets Pat Thrall - with an octave divider - and then finished off with some kinda theramin sounding histrionics, over the solo section reserved for Janick - but it sounded so great, and Janick was away with his family, so we're decided to keep it!! Hope Jan doesn't mind............

Landing now - more later!

* Thursday, May 4 *

This will, in fact, be the last recording diary, as I finish the final mix today! And I love the album. Bruce was in again on Monday to do the last vocal track, which is so high, only dogs can hear it - and then we painstakingly compiled the early verses - as Steve has a very particular thing he wanted to hear on the vocals. Maiden do-all-chap Dave Pattenden came to the studio to do a recce for new Maiden pix with the photographer - Adrian called in to see how things were coming along - Davey's wife emailed me about their flat in London where I'm holed up (although no word from Davey, who's work on this record is stellar!), and on Tuesday, as I entered the studio I was suprised by the sight of Nicko in neon pyjamas, just landed from Florida, who embraced me very warmly (well, you could if you would, old boy - shouldn't you!). I love that man, but not as much as he loves me! It's true! Haha! 0h, that's an "in" joke, sorry! * To stop him talking, so I could work, I stuck my iPod into Nicko's ears, and played him the final mixes. He was very impressed, and so we sent our assistant Alex out to get Nicko his own iPod (which they no doubt put on the recording budget so now I'll never recoup!), and I dumped the Maiden tracks onto his iPod, along with some Alison Krauss and Miles Davis, before he went to see the Queen review, We Will Rock You, for the umpteenth time! There's no accounting for taste, really! After that, Wing Commander Biggles cycled in on his bike to pick up a CD before flying a sortie to Sierra Leone, as 'Arry looked over gigs for his gorgeous and talented daughter Lauren, who's becoming a star in her own right! Must be in the jeans.. er .. genes! Check her out at www.myspace.com/laurenharrisuk * So, it's like a bustling train station in there!

Jan was in on Tuesday, and we started the long and laborious process of overdubbing guitars onto the last song on the album. It's a lengthy process, because it's a song that he has written a lot of the music for, and has demo'd it with a very straight drum machine program, and not at all like the skip and galloping that Nicko and 'Arry have played on the track - and so we had to find the middle ground between the versions, which is ultimately how Iron Maiden sound! There are also layers af acoustic guitars - 6 and 12 strings - and after the lead solo Jan added late last night, all we have to add today are a few keyboard washes and then I'll finish the mix! Album done!!! And the title is............... I don't bloody know, and if I did, I couldn't tell you anyway, could I? Tomorrow I'll get the B side mixes started and then next week, I'll be mixing some surround sound live material for later use - before i head off to Barcelona on the weekend or the Formula 1 race, and then back to California.

And so, that's it folks - hope you've enjoyed the little I've managed to write for you on our studio shenanigans - and I hope you love the album, as much as I've loved being part of it again! See you at a show sometime - come up 'n say hi!!

Up The Irons!!
so, how long 'til release then?

It can still go pear shaped, the only free bass player we know likes super heavy and fast grindcore and there are like 3 drummers in Hull. It has taken me like 4 bands to get a chappy that likes Maiden.

-The Frank
05-06-2006, 10:28 PM
The rest of my band dont really listen to maiden anymore, that is except my drummer. we've only played the trooper and the wicker man. And to piss the rest of the band members off , in the middle of a song me and the drummer will just go straight into RTTH.

Iron maiden destoys band practices.

I must change this.

Josh
05-07-2006, 05:44 AM
oh dear god. i...tolerate Fall Out Boy, but only because my gf listens to them. Dance Dance is bearable, but Sugar We're Going Down is officially the most annoying song ever.

when she gets her mp3 player back this week, she wants me to put a load of music on it, that i have (RHCP, Lostprohpets, Maroon 5, Green Day, etc) and "anything she should like". i think i'll give her a load of maiden, metallica, bruce, etc, i'll just leave out the death metal.

My band wants to do Sugar We're going Down. I like Dance Dance and we've played that before so I'd rather do that.

I'll only play it if I can play the tetris theme halfway through.

I'm gonna try and get us to do Hallowed be thy name.

My area is a weird one, there are a lot of chavs and emo/indy folk in my city, there are a few core metalheads and we all seem to know each other somehow and most are elitist pigs, so only like Metallica and 'heavier' bands.

Gods own truth...

Sadly Sonata's cover of Die With Your Boots On is...regretable at best. Seriously, their guitarist doesn't come close to recreating those awsome harmonies, their drummer doesn't hold a candle to Nicko, the keyboards are poorly implamented, and worst of all the bass is non excistent. And Tony's a good power metal singer and all, but he's woefully outclassed when trying to sing Maiden. Oh well, I'll just go listen to the original.

That is rather lame but I also found a link to an entire Opeth show so I'm happy for the next hour.

Haha, well yeah, if I wasn't so desperate to watch it I wouldn't be too happy myself. I'll be buying it as soon as I get the money, I've just been in debt for ages and I've been wanting to see this for ages. :p

i have Ollie's copy of DOTR on my coffee table at the moment, i'll either watch it tonight, this weekend, or early next week, depending on how quickly i get me coursework and exam prep done.

And to whoevers sending it, I'd love Bruce's version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Send it to Aboodaboodabi@gmail.com

Josh

They'd be better off just playing their entire discography. That would make such a marvellously fantastic concert:)

I was thinking how awesome an encore of the entire SSOASS album would be.

Jesus.

there's a thing on the IMOC of 20 questions to ask Rod Smallwood. anyone got anything they want me to enter, to see if he chooses to answer it?

Ask him if maiden will ever try to tour china.

On the live songs subject, id really like to hear public enema #1 live, infact, it would be very cool to have any song from NPFTD to be in the setlist.

I think HBTN is overrated but still damn good. Sign Of The Cross on RiR has to be one of Maiden's best.

They should have done that for a DVD instead of Death On The Road.

But as i was listening to DOTR i noticed bruce didnt hold the long note at the beggining of HBTN, the "RUNNING LOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWW"
part.

Is he getting that old?

Nah..he had to sneeze
he had a cold that night. when i saw them that tour, he held that note fine, but he couldn't hold "hiiiillllllsssssss" in RTTH, but then that was at the end.

at Leeds last year, he was just perfect on all the songs.

is it sad im sitting here, listening to death on the road, crying cos i cant get tickets for maiden?

shall i get seated and see them from the balcony, or not go and risk them not touring again?

would be my first ever maiden gig, ive wanted to see maiden live since the age of 12, im 16 now...

but seated...

earls court btw

Josh

you'll get a good view from the balcony, but i wouldn't worry about them not touring again, i think they'd tour on zimmer frames if there was no other way.

Josh

I was actually doing some calculation last night and decided they have at least 6 more tours they have to do:

1 upcomming tour
2 more history tours
2 more album tours
1 farewell tour

Josh
