Rubbish! It's a song about a drunken tearaway - not really appropriate for clean living Brucie! Plus Di'anno had a much rawer voice

Paul's voice is moer agressive and raw, but the sound of Iron Maiden is to polished for it IMO and the band wouldnt have reached where they did today with out Bruce. Bruce's sense of songwriting as well brought the band to a new level where Paul was more just a frontman, I enjoy some of the Paul era material with Bruce more but some songs just arnt for him to sing like "Drifter".

yeah, drifter i will agree dont fit for bruce, but if running free hadnt fitted his voice, iron maiden wouldnt played it on about every tour...

and, GET BACK THE TWINS! i start to miss em...

very true, i like Running Free better with Bruce as well as Sanctuary. But Drifter and Another Life (anything that is more "punkish" at times) goes better with Paul, but i like how Bruce handles old classics like Wrathchild and Iron Maiden live as well.

haha, Yes...Rush are tied with my other two favourites....Iron Maiden and SP, and Megadeth is tied after that with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath haha. its like groupings!! if you ever have any Rush questions just ask me in here or e-mail me at * geezerbutler@hotmail.com * and ill be glad to help! ive liked Rush for almost a decade now, i used to hate them when i was little, but when i got my bass at age 13 i instantly fell in love with Geddy and when you have musicians like Alex and Neil along side him its really a one of a kind group. No other 3-peiece band can match their live sound nor their songwriting talents, even Neil's lyrics are phenominal in theirself!!! When im at a rock show i tell people my favouite band is Rush, and at a metal show i tell them Iron Maiden haha.

Edit I have just been looking at the last page, and the longest anybody here has been listening to maiden is 5 years.........I'm shocked, I have been listening to Maiden since I was in the womb (my mother used to listen to powerslave and somewhere in time when she was pregnant with me) and I have been listening to them non-stop since then (except on two occasions, the first being when we lost all the LPs for 1 whole year, and the second when Bruce left, but I did listen to the olders albums I had, I just didn't follow the band as much. oh and by the way I'm 18 in 3 weeks and I get my A-level Results on the same day </spam>

Here's a question I think you could help me with:

Whenever a band member's name is credited to a song (i.e. "Harris" or "Smith/Dickinson"), does that mean they wrote both the words and music, just the music (with Steve Harris writing all the lyrics), or just the lyrics (with each band member writing their part)?

FrailandBedazzled1979
07-31-2004, 04:07 PM
hmmm it depends on which member your talking about. I havent known anyone to write lyrics except Steve, Bruce, and Adrian really. Someone may come up with a guitar line, another with a vocal melody, and a third might do the chorus or an interlude...basically they all throw in bits and pieces to make it fit, depends on the members really.

PS: ill be in london for a week, so if i see Romford on a map ill be like "hey mom, lets go here!"...she knows what im up to though lol.

and go up to random people and ask if they know where he lives.

As for the writing of songs, the whole band kinda sits in a little circle (kinda like a campfire) and wirtes songs..........I know this, 'cos on the wildest dreams DVD single, there was a "making of Dance of Death" and there was a bit where they were practising montsegur, it sounds weird without distortion

Its easily my least favourite of the Dickenson years. Not only is his voice weaker but it's the only album with filler tracks IMO. The songs on there that i like are some of my faovuites (wasting love, here to eternity, etc...) but some of the music on there you can see why the majority of it has never been played live. A bad choice for a first Maiden album to get into the band.

Question time: What is that weird bass that Steve played only a couple of times, apprarently? It's on the inside of the CD booklet for the remastered Powerslave album. It's blue with a rosewood fretboard with stylish inlays. I don't really know how to describe it, except it's weird. I think I also saw it in one of their videos (like "Aces High" or "Number of the Beast"). Can anyone tell me what it is?

GurS

that's the steve harris custom bass: the Lado Steve Harris Uniform (i think is the one you're reffering to) and yeh, i think he used it in the 2 minutes to midnight video, maybe aces high aswell... i assume you mean the one with the radioactive-symbol inlays. check the lado website (not sure of url, run a google search) and there's a picture there with the specs

yeh, it was absolutley amazing, cheers for the welcome. and also, i can't believe you live in donington! (bubbles green with envy). i wanted to go to download last year but i didn't, which really pissed me off because, well, maiden were headlining... and this year i have stupid f'ing exams at the same time (i think... as's are roughly download time, no?) which pisses me off even more... *cries*

well I don't live in donington, i meant to say I live in the uk, but hey, my bad.

haha, I just finished my A-levels, so next year I should be able to go, as long as uni doesn't clash....**** education :upset: .

That DVD looks very impressive, I already got the "live at the rainbow" video, one of the first things you see of the band on that video is paul diannos lycra covered croutch, not something to show the young'uns.

First few albums were good, but I think they were just experimenting and getting used to each other and writing together, and they really took off after NOTB.

didn't Dianno do acoustic versions of the first album with his new band? hard to imagine phantom of the opera acoustic. lol

wow!! really? Infinate Dreams is argubly my favourite track from SSOASS and the Prophecy has a fantastic intro and interlude, very Murray-ish hehe i enjoy it alot! Infinate Dreams i like alot due to the lyrical content, and how Bruce handles an extended chorus, its quite a doozy to get through "its got to be....etc..." lol, and the interlude is wonderfull...espically the live version on the Visions of the Beast DVD where Steve's bass is cranked up like crazy oh how i love it!!

since were on that album id probley rate the songs like this.

1. Moonchild
2. Infinate Dreams
3. The Clairvoyant
4. Only The Good Die Young
5. The Evil That Men Do
6. Can I Play With Madness
7. The Prophecy
8. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

i LOVE every song on that albumt to death, but if i had to rank them thats how it would go.

GurS
08-07-2004, 01:29 PM
i'd rank 'em like this

1. The Evil That Men Do
2. Moonchild
3. The Clairvoyant
4. Can I Play With Madness
5. Only The Good Die Young
6. Title Track
7. The Prophecy
8. Infinite Dreams

I dunno, I find infinite dreams quite bland personally... the prophecy's outro more than justifies the more irritating aspects of the song.

well, the album isn't the best... probably 4th best album imho.

the albums in order (for me)

TNOTB
Powerslave
Brave New World
Seventh Son
S/T
Dance Of Death
Piece Of Mind
Killers
No Prayer For The Dying
Fear Of The Dark
Somewhere In Time*
The X-Factor*

I would rank SSOASS as

1. Moonchild
2. Infinite Dreams
3. The Clairvoyant
4. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
5. The Evil that Men Do
6. Can I Play With Madness
7. Only the Good Die Young
8. The Prophecy

Although SSOASS is number four, the bit in the middle with the quiet-buildup part is incredible, and is my favourite piece of music I have ever heard. But the start of the song kind of lets it fall to number four.

well, i don't know much maiden on bass, and that which i've learnt i've forgotten (i haven't REALLY played bass in nearly a year)

guitar, i know quite a lot of the songs, but not the solos (my time is spread between 4 or 5 instruments, so generally i don't have enough time/patience to learn the solos, the only one i've learnt is the 2nd one in blood brothers)

drums, i only know flight of icarus, running free and the mercenary (due to nicko being so **** good at drums, a lot of his fills etc. are hard to emulate)

iron giosba
08-08-2004, 07:21 AM
this is my classific but it is very difficult to put a iron's song last

1. The Clairvoyant
2. Infinite Dreams
3. Can I Play With Madness
4. The Evil that Men Do
5. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
6. moonchild
7. The Prophecy
8. Only the Good Die Young

when i bought that album i used to really dislike it...but in time it has become one of my favourites. So many WONDERFUL timeless Maiden tracks "sun and steel" "die with your boots on" "revelations" "still life" etc...its just phenominal...i know some songs on there have never been played live (sun and steel, quest for fire, and to tame a land very very few times but no recording of it) but the majority of the album are concert favourites...hell they did 3 in a row on the "give'em ed till im dead tour" last summer!! \m/

Steve's bass lines on there are phenoinal but that has his worst tone of all the albums, he has it at a much lower register as opposed to his usual high treble metallic clang that we all know and love, id like to hear it redone like that...but i dont let it get to me :)

our drummer may have a hard time but our two guitarist are **** good. we just all come from different backgrounds of rock. me and the rythem are the only two serious Maiden fans but he doesn't have enough of a backbone for it I think. We almost convinced them to learn Screaming for Vengence (Judas Priest for those who don't know) though. However, I got to thinking which war is being talked about.

Key points to consider:
Fighting against Russians.
Soldiers riding horses.
But guns exist, as stated in the song.

What war do you think is being talked about, or do you think it's just some random made-up war?

I have a question. Out of all the Maiden songs I've heard so far, The Trooper is my favorite.

However, I got to thinking which war is being talked about.

Key points to consider:
Fighting against Russians.
Soldiers riding horses.
But guns exist, as stated in the song.

What war do you think is being talked about, or do you think it's just some random made-up war?

it's actually about the Charge of the Light Brigade during the crimean war, which was mainly Britain against Russia, but Prussia and some other countries also fought in the war, Prussia being on the Brit's side. i don't know what the war was about, but it happened around the 1850s/60s. i always used to think it was about WWI aswell, but we never fought the russians in WWI, and horses were used for a few months before they got blown to pieces by shells while stuck in mud a few meters deep. the song also mentions muskets, which were never used in WWI. if you've seen the video you'll know it's not WW1 also, it's clips from some old movie, cant remember the name but it's about the charge of the light brigade.

Yeah. I like the title track from Brave New World and Dream of Mirrors alot. IMO, his voice matured very well on that album. Although he may not be hitting quite as many highs as in the classic era, his timbre is excellent and songwriting incredible.

But...I've got to say, every time I hear "2 minutes to Midnight," I can't help but sing along.

E.vil_N.ever_D.ies1344

yeah he did mature nice at that point. NPFTD and FOTD were a dark time for him(well not all the tracks) but he did nice on Brave New World and Dream of Mirrors and The Nomad are two of my favorites off that album.

I like 2 minutes but it got boring after awhile (sorta like Run to the Hills)

I'd love to jam with some people and do some Maiden. Sadly, Jersey isn't really a rockin' state. Not anymore anyway. All the rockers are either old or mainstream crap. Oh and we have lot's of emo and rap too. Not much real classic rock or metalheads though.

where in Jersey do you live? I live there too, Bergen county.

its hard to hit em like Bruce NOW, forget hit prime, he's just that good :)

Out of curiosity....what, in your opinion, are Dickinson's best vocal performances?

The Trooper, Hallowed be thy Name, Aces High, Flash of the Blade, Invaders, Revelations, Paschendale, Dream of Mirrors, Blood Brothers, and I can't get enough of the verses to Moonchild. Of course, the list could go on and on and on.

Yeah. I like the title track from Brave New World and Dream of Mirrors alot. IMO, his voice matured very well on that album. Although he may not be hitting quite as many highs as in the classic era, his timbre is excellent and songwriting incredible.

And for the kid who dislikes the chorus to run to the hills. What would you do if you saw them live? They always end their set to it because it IS the greatest maiden song. (I love all their songs, but you all know that song gets everyone pumped (well if you have ever been to their concerts or seen the concert vids.)
