I just picked up my bass for the first time in two weeks....my plucking finger is nearly bleeding. Maybe playing Out of the Silent planet and double speed isn't a good idea :p

Heaven Can Wait might be Maiden's best "singalong" song. The chorus is so addictive, as is the woah-a-woah part. Seriously, there've been times I'll be walking through school, and suddenly realize I'll be inaudibally muttering that part. The rest of the album is just as good (except a few tracks, of course.) They really need to break out more Somewhere in Time tracks live (not that it matters if they don't tour the ****ing US. Damn Ozzfest and your driving Maiden away.)

Trivium is better than most bands of their genre, but for the most part you probably won't notice it. You can tell that they are HUGE Maiden fans because sometimes their choruses turn really anthemic and catchy. This is probably a dream of a lifetime for them, so think of it that way :)

They, the Iron Maiden label chaps, have asked me to write you a little recording studioupdate, and keep it off my diary - but I'm not promising! They'd have to pay me for that! What I will do, is let you read it in the Fan Club first!

After our first week of knuckling down and beginning to cut basic tracks, we had a very interesting second week. We've cut 10 long songs for the new album, as well as four songs for B sides, which show quite an interesting side to the band. Don't worry, there's nothing like the "interesting-or-maybe-not" B sides which were all that were left over for the Dance of Death singles. These are great cover versions with a terrific and humourous spirit!

Nicko was due to wrap up the album drum tracks this week, which he did - celebrating the end of each new take with very fine and expensive French wines - some Margaux, some Chateau Palmer - you get the idea. Because I join in the celebrations, I bought some wonderful £3.99 Australian Shirazes, which I cunningly decanted before serving them up to our esteemed battery-boy! He seemed to enjoy them JUST as much, and seemingly didn't notice the changes in varietals, regions or vintages! I know a little of wine, as I owned a wonderful cellar of French wines myself, which I sent to auction late last year, as I never got to my house, and the bottles were running a serious risk of becoming thousands of dollars worth of vinegar - and I didn't mind the young Aussie drop at all!

Anyhoo, the spirit in the band is as high as I've ever seen. Wing Commander Biggles (as I call Bruce) is running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, singing every take live, like it was his last - 'Arry, or Steve is sounding better than I've ever heard since I began producing the band, galloping along very strongly - and the material is definitely the "groovingest" in a decade. The songs are very progressive, with catchy choruses and I have to confess to being VERY optimistic about the material. The Three Amigos are roaring in their guitar booths, and I have been running around with a video camera, capturing the session as it unfolds, which has been annoying the **** out of Janick, but as he bought me beers in the pub all night long last night (a first!), he can't be too annoyed at me! Anyway, you'll get to see his "bad time of the month" tantrums on the next behind-the-scenes DVD, as well as some stunning acoustic playing he's delivered! Davey is as amiable as ever, playing flowing leads seemingly effortlessly; and Adrian is as concerned as ever - he really is the worry-wort of the sessions. Always quizzing guitar tones, song tempos and second guessing his amazing performances, which are always the most precise of the 3. His wife tells him to go fishing to chill out, which she assures me, calms him down!

We've had a few guests in - Nicko went out with Manuel from Fawlty Towers -I think his name is Andrew Sachs - and then he came by with his rather attractive brunette daughter, to watch me putting the finishing touches to a B side song.

Thursday, Jimmy Page dropped by to see me, and I dragged him into the studio, where all the band were in their positions busy playing, and they had no idea he was coming and were very happily surprised! Jimmy still is the consumate rock star/legend/icon he's always been! And of course, my beloved son Josh, has been watching the sessions unfold, as he sits quietly in the corner doing line drawings of Eddie on pads of foolscap, before he heads out to the pub with his buddies, and fake ID in his pocket! He's the only one who's been allowed to watch the sessions - and he thinks the material is awesome. He's a big fan of Avenged Sevenfold and Chiodos, so...... I think it's going to be a mighty album!

Last night, the 3 Amigos, Wing Commander Biggles and myself (and many Sanctuary personnel) were part of a pub crawl to bid farewell to Jackie da Costa, who's been part of the Maiden camp for some time; and then Biggles and his wife, myself and Mrs. Smith went to dine at the up-yer-bum establishment that is The Electric, on Portabello Road. Adrian was being dad and fishing (?), Nicko had a wisdom tooth removed, and was by all accounts "well out of it!" and didn't make it, and 'Arry "hates that ****" and avoided the two hour drive from Harlow just to drink on St. Paddys Day! So, while Mrs. Smith and Dickinson pretentiously dined on fish and white wine at our fabby, if horribly smoky dinner, I had a burger and a Coke, and Bruce had beer, broccoli florettes and ketchup, and french fries! He insisted that the Lycopene and anti-oxidants were all part of an all-round healthy diet! It was just a classy affair all 'round, really!!

Next, I'm in the process of going through all the takes, selecting the best ones, then the band will be in mid-week to begin the overdubbing phase.

Back to work. Monday saw me alone in the studio, going through the tracks and picking the performances, editing and fixing up the few blatant stinkers where necessary. Nicko has left the building, for the sunny shores of Miami, Flahdah - and kindly left us all with his stinkin' lurgy, so there's much coughing and sputtering around the console!

Tuesday, all the lads came in and I played them rough mixes of all the basic tracks, and they're sounding incredible (even Adrian was thrilled!) - then we went through who's doing what guitar solos where, where the Three Amigos are playing harmony melodies, where keys would play melody and pad - and the album is a terrific Iron Maiden album - full of trademark gallops and canters, hard rocking choruses - perhaps a little more tough prog riffing spirited about than on record lately, and definitely a couple of well grounded groovers in there too. Long melodic intros abound and the rocker that's probably the single, is as tough as it gets on radio. There's one about a famous eccentric and novelist, who's memorabilia is sensitively distributed throughout the studio for inspiration. It turns out that Janick is a bit of an avid collector and an anorak about this fellow, and he isn't Pawtucket Pat!! We call the song, The Rime Of Billy Bunter!

Wing Commander Biggles has been absent all week - flying sorties to Egypt and Sierra Leone.

'Arry been in a fine mood as his beloved West Ham are through to the quarter finals of the F.A. Cup, although we did have a loud and heated argument about a guitar harmony (it wasn't a debate) - he insists he's right, but I know I am! I pedantically threw out "I've studied classical composition" to which he maturely countered with "well, I don't give a toss as I've studied rockabilly!" Anyway, you had to be there and the moment will forever be shrouded in the mists of time....but most importantly the harmonies came out AMAZING, and I know I'm right! If he needs to say otherwise, he can do the damn diary! Well, we all want the best record possible - and then some! Here are some pictures of his rig - and the bass on this album is the best sounding it's been in years - not that he's doing anything different - but I certainly have! It's definitely going to be the best Maiden record since the great Martin Birch left the dark and dingy control room for greene r fairways. That's genius.......

As I mentioned, the Three Amigos were in yesterday, doing guitar melodies on a couple of songs - their lilting tones playing along the sing-a-long tunes that only 'Arry can write, and Davey put a solo over one that just lifted it into the stratosphere - with a Celtic lilt to get Steven Hawkins doing the jig! Today, I'm just waiting for Davey, who's going to do some more soloing, and we're moving along with him (not that he's in a rush), as his family are all in Hawaii and he must be looking forward to spending time with them, before the Maiden trucks roll out for the tour at year's end!

Anyhoo, that's it for this week - there's actually not that much to say - because that's what making a record is. The same slog and grind day after day. I only do it, because i can't do anything else!! If I raise the seat on my bicycle, I invariably strip the thread - even though I always have. My dad used to yell at me about being more sensitive, but I just don't know when to stop.........

omg, more prog-sounding than before...
should be great :)

But, now to think of it, when listening, you dont really get that X-factor feeling. Which is dark and depressing. They should have just made one more album with blaze and put all the songs that didnt make virtualXI and Xfactor on it.

Daves solo tone at the moment; is (I think) Bass and treble nearly full, mids scoop. about half way on your Reverb, some sort of combination of Phaser, Flange and Chorus, I'm still working it out. Been struggling with it since I got my V-amp 2 :upset:

DOTR and FOTD are both awesome, go buy buy buy. And apperntly the new album is going to be a concept album along with being a double album. They have already cut 10 tracks for it. Also, more acoustic stuff.

Josh
04-01-2006, 06:55 AM
i don't think it's going to be a double album. 10 long tracks would probably only make it 80 minutes or so.
links to the studio reports, so you don't have to look back a few pages:

also, the "more acoustic" thing could refer to more Dream Of Mirrors-style tracks, Janick does the acoustic on that.

I've always thought it was someone else too.

He greatly reduced his film work from around 1975, as horror itself suffered a slump, and increased his narrative and voice work. For example, Price's voiceover is heard on Alice Cooper's first solo album Welcome to My Nightmare; in Michael Jackson's music video, Thriller as well on Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast"'; and, in one of his last major and one of his favourite feature film roles, as the voice of Professor Ratigan in Walt Disney Pictures' The Great Mouse Detective. He also starred for a year in the early 1970s in a syndicated daily radio program, Tales of the Unexplained.

Didn't he die before they made the album? And plus 'Run to The Hills' and every over source except wiki says it was only a guy who sounded like him...

i meant the backing singer. the other bloke. i dunno which one it is, its either adrian smith or steve harris i think. it wasn't bruces voice, it was backing.

they use a synthesiser on that song too. they shouldn't have.

It is Bruce that say's 'Agnes'. If you watch closely you can see that his mouth does not close in order to create the sound of 'M'. He also had a cold on that night which may have added to it.

on Piece of Mind, on Still Life, some jamaican guy says something which is recorded backwards. what is it?

Im not exactly sure what he says but it's taking the mick out of all the hoohah over satanic messages and like being heard if you played a record backwards. There's supposed to be something like that on stairway to heaven and judas priest almost got in trouble with the law in america (breakin the law breakin the law...sorry had to put that in) because two boys committed suicide while listening to one of their songs because apparently the record said 'do it do it' when played backwards. Anyway, Iron Maiden were mocking such things

Yeah, it was poking fun at the people who called Maiden satanists after The Number of the Beast.

Still Life is probably their best little known song.

Isn't there supposed to be a hidden message in one of Maiden's songs that when you play it backwards it says something like ''what are you listening to Iron Maiden for, they're ****'?

well im confused then. because there is a backing singer, and he was the one who sang it without the M. the lead singer sings it normally. unless Bruce is doing the backing() then it must have been the backing singer.

newest Studio Report is up on the IMOC:
Greetings again from Maiden Central.

Another week has slipped by, and the album is prrogressing at an amazing pace - we have 2 songs finished, apart from the vocals, and they are pretty mind-blowing. The "single" I guess, was the first which features a terrific solo from Adrian and is fairly compact, along the lines of recent rockers - and the second is a tour-de-force, with a quiet intro, really great chorus, some proggy staccato riffing, a sing-along guitar melody section, and again two phenomenal solos, one from Davey and one from Adrian, which almost sounds like a fusion solo - a la John McLaughlin - amazing!

Davey is winging his way to sunny Hawai'i now, and the Wing Commander will be in today to sing, after which we'll be off to the Royal Albert Hall to see Gillan and friends, Judas Priest and the Scorpions. Even Steve is coming, whatever next? Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Janick and I went out on Wednesday night, to the local pub, and I got myself thoroughly ****-faced. Not very attractive, after which I scolded the cabby for taking me the long way home and it costing me £10 instead of the normal £5. He insisted that it was the only way, and I could never do it for £5, so I bet him £20 I could. So, he turned around, went back to the pub (with a thoroughly inebriated me in the back, and having a right old giggle) turned the meter on again, and asked me the route I'd prefer. And, he took me home again. At the front door, the meter read £5.20. So, he said "see, it's impossible for £5!!" So, I laughed and coughed up the £20, and he dug around for change, but I figured it was a fun enough cameo that I insisted he keep it.

As I got out the cab, I got a text message from Janick saying "Police have found a man's body in the park. Beer belly, wrinkly arse, small **** and a face like a slapped arse. Text me back so I know your (sic) OK." All I could text back was "I am having a bet" because I couldn't read the letters on my phone with all that whisky in me, to which he replied "Thank God you're safe, I was sure it was you!" Cheeky monkey!

And that's all really - we're working away - very diligently and moving along - and as I have said before, it is going to be stunning!!! I really love the songs and sonically, I am very pleased with where it's at, so...........

that's all - there's not much to write that isn't more of the same. Janick has more of his BB nonsense in this week.......... I'd never even heard of him!

Until next week - keep your feet on the ground and reach for the stars! Up the irons!

I like that concert they're going to: Ian Gillian and friends, Judas Priest and Scorpions. I guess the guys from Maiden can only attend it because if they played it would be too much metal for one venue to handle. The club would collapse under the weight of its own \m/ -ness.
