you mean outta cliff and steve right?
i'd have to say steve harris coz u can hear all his basslines in the songs really well and just watch how fast he moves his fingers when he plays

Looks Much Faster than it is, i dont know how he manage to make it look that fast... i dont much problems playing his lines anyway... But, Steve is SOO much more mighty than That Cliff...
Burton was fast, but Steve is faster.
Steve doesnt solo as in live without any instruments, but if you listen closely to some songs, some bits sound like bass solos. For example, the very last part in 22 Acacia Avenue, theres a awesome bass bit, played real fast, with the guitars playing rhythm. Theres a similar thing in Number of the Beast, right after the first solo.
Burton was great, he brought a very musical approach to metallica's music. But Steve is the main man in Maiden, he does everything. Steve always keeps in mind what is suited to a particular piece of music, he doesnt play fast just cos its cool.
Plus whats called Maiden's trademark gallop rhythm is all in the bass. Also Steve's got the click sound, which i still havent figured out how he does, and that gives him a very distinct sound.

I think it has something to do with the flatwound strings he uses. Also, he probably boosts his mids a lot.

yeah, you can hear the bass in EVERY Maiden song, and the bassline is always awesome. Steve knows when to play rhythm, when to stray from the guitar, when to do whatever.

I get that sound Every time i play an fender P-Bass of some reason... I love it though, so now im gonna buy an Fender P :D
And i think much of that clacking sound has to do with that steve always have used Much treble and little bass on his Amp to cut through the guitars...
(thanks for giving me a reason to bump this :p :thumb: )
well.. i didnt read much. all i wanna say is iron maiden brought me into metal. n inspired me 2 pick up electric guitar? haha

very true, the "ides of march" and "transylvania" also are worth a mention..."losfer words" is easily my favourite.

Former IRON MAIDEN Singers DI'ANNO, BAYLEY Perform Together - July 4, 2004
Former IRON MAIDEN vocalists Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley teamed up for a duet on the MAIDEN classic "Running Free" as part of their appearance at the Rock The Nations Open Air Festival in Istanbul, Turkey this past weekend. The three-day event, which took place July 2-4 at the Maslak venue, featured performances by both Paul Di'Anno's new solo band (dubbed SCREAMING MONKEY) and Bayley's BLAZE project. This was the first time ever that the two former MAIDEN singers have performed together.

the first maiden song i heard was "bring your daughter to the slaughter", which i thought was a decent enough song, but couldn't understand what all the hype was. i then heard "run to the hills" and "fear of the dark live" and was, in a word, hooked. I got number of the beast album and that's where it all kicked off.
On amazon, i found (on the zShop auction thing) a copy of live!! + one going for $50.

i tried to keep it on the first page, but im gues im not as populare as frail :p
'twas merely an observation.
here's a good game for increasing the thread popularity.
someone has to say AT LEAST one line of a maiden song. Everyone else then has to guess which song it is, and what album it's from. The person who said the line then has to post the verse or chorus that the line is from, making the line bold and italics. if that makes sense.
So i'll start.

Those of you in a band, look at my post about people in bands:
this is what is posted on that thread:
Aight fools... we all know that the Death Heads thread has revolutionized the online metal underground... kinda. well... how about we take the next step, and go outside of the box into reality.
Angeldeath wants to start an underground unsigned band tape trade/distro: Bands send each other their demos, cds, tapes, shirts....anything in exchange for other band's merch, and then sell them at shows. That way, were helping expose each other all over the place, plus were getting some cash in our pockets which is cool too.
SO. Any/all people who play in bands that are definitely metal, no ****ing genre exclusion... any and all metal, post your email/contacts here and what your band has, and then lets get the underground revolution started again.

"seems like someone just opened the door to life, or is it death?"
hmm a blazy song from XI, I think its The Educated Fool
"Should we keep at bay the Beast?"
Como Estais Amigos, one of my fave XI songs.
I see you like Blaze then...
now my one
So you think you can own me, well you better just think again
I think this one is sufficiently tricky enough :naughty:

Prowler has one.
Sometimes there aren't really solos but just like an interlude thingy with harmonies (Deja Vu, Flash of the Blade).

I also saw 'em, in december and I know they said that, but people were saying that they wasn't going to tour for 2+ yrs.
And I've been talking to people and everyone reckons that they are playing at that festival at donnington. And it is Definitely maiden playing not just bruce (but wasn't Janick apart of bruces solo band? and i thought that adrian helped out also).

So here's a question to bump the thread off the sixth page:
Are the Iron Maiden albums you own the originals, or are they the re-released ones that are Enhanced CDs with the computer program on them?

I have all the enhanced ones.......I want the original CDs tho. But I do own all the Albums from Iron Maiden to Sevength on LP (except NOTB, I can't find it anywhere). I have two Sevength son LPs one is the bog standard plain one and the other is the picture one.

To get a good feel for the "classic" sound of Iron Maiden get "the number of the beast" first, my favourite albums are "somewhere in time" "brave new world" and "seventh son of a seventh son" but "the number of the beast was the one that got me hooked". :) we WILL get you obessed with this band! haha

well, i started off with "no prayer for the dying" and "fear of the dark" as my first two Maiden cds (IMO the weakest with Bruce) and didnt get really hooked onto them until i heard "the number of the beast". I still have a real soft spot for "no prayer" and listen to it more than most of the Maiden albums because it was my first, but i wouldnt say its the best introduction to the band. Also, if you've never heard Maiden before and start off with something from Blayze's years he might never get into them, as alot of people do not enjoy his era as much. still, every Maiden album is great but not all are perfect to start with.

"Where Eagle's Dare" is not a good song, it's a great song! Who cares if it's too long? As for the middle instrumental part, it's ****ing awesome! Sure there's not enough of a solo, but they make up for it when Dave and Adrian are harmonizing.

maiden owns all!!!Dickensons voice is amazing, Harris's lyrics are epic, and though most of his bass lines are repeated in most of their songs they still kick ***...Murray, Gers, Smith just own all other guitarists, Nicko is probably one of the best drummers i have ever heard, him and Harris are so on cue with eachother its mind boggling

Powerslave- argubly the best song from "powerslave" and IMO one of Davey's best leads is in that song as well. Great lyrical content from Steve about Egypt (eye of horus, etc...) and a chorus to die for.
Hallowed be Thy Name- a song that most Maiden fan's say helped get them into the band, but after becoming a Maiden-nut it is easily forgotten by other fan favourites. Still very memorable and i always prefer a live version to it than the studio one. Nicko's favourite song to play live :)
Paschendale- probley the most well written song by the band in over a decade, a real opus for the group, Adrian completly shreds on his lead and has some of the most moving lyrics in Maiden history, espicaly the (cruelty have a human heart...) line. One of the most powerful tracks in the band catalog not to mention an energetic and atmospheric masterpiece.
Two Minutes to Midnight- another predictable Maiden classic that i have always thought has gotten more praise than i think it deserved. dont get me wrong, i love the song but they (espically Adrian) have written better. The outro is my favourite part (repeating "midnight") overall a great Maiden track and always a live favoruite.
Fear of the Dark- everything about this song hits home for me, the intro shoots adrenealine through your veins and interlude is fantastic. Uplifting music and a highlight of the end of their 10 year stint with Bruce in 92'...great song to end it with, even if the album had some filler.

I rarely use a pick, and never for Maiden. I only use a pick for certain cover songs with my band (Jet's - Are you gonna be my girl, for example) But I prefer fingers. I remember watching Harris' styke and he plays and his hand moves like he's usin a pic, even though he's not, it was kind of funny to watch. I guess a bass player who learned finger picking from his style would do that too, I play like Burton because I learned from his style, but either way, Harris is **** good.

wow thanx 4 all ur comments i agree with you 100%, except on two minutes to midnight, when you say they've written better, lyrics-wise i think its their best. not musically though.

but like i said thanks for giving me your thoughts on the songs, what 's your top 5?
FrailandBedazzled1979
07-23-2004, 03:50 AM
your right, Bruce did write all of Powerslave! Another reason i like Bruce at the helm of the band over Paul, Bruce can really hold his own when it comes to submititng killer tracks like "flash of the blade" "bring your daughter...to the slaughter" etc...i said what i said about "two minutes to midnight" because to me some songs are more bland in the studio but really shine live, and thats one of them...being an Adrian dominated song, i feel he's done better, but still love the song :)
I think we should all give opinions on some Maiden songs, see how each of us views them.
What is everyone's opinions of "Die with your boots on"...one of my top 5 favourite Maiden tracks in the histroy of the band. :)

Yes, i ment get the same ones Steve uses for my P-bass. If you want to help out your sound on the amp...turn all the Mid's to ( 0 ) and the bass to (4) and the treble to (7) thats how i have it and when i have new strings on it sounds alot like Steve's signature sound! the trick is elimating the mids i think.

Well die with your boots on is indeed a great song, but not one of my top 5.
Where the hell did you get to know that bruce wrote whole powerslave?
Aces high: Harris
2 minutes to midnight: Adrian and bruce
Losfer words: Harris
Flash of the blade: Bruce
The duelists: harris
Back in the village: adrian and bruce
Powerslave: dickinson
Rime of the ancient mariner: Harris
Still, the whole band are included during the writing period, so you can say that everyone in the band contributed there.

This is kind of a pointless post from me, but I hear so many good things about Maiden I couldn't help it...
I recently heard several songs off Number of the Beast, and to be honest, thought they were amazing. I would definitely like to look into buying some Maiden albums, but is Number of the Beast their best? If not, then which one is (in your opinions)?

well...The Number of the Beast is a PERFECT album to get into the band in my opinion, so id say go with that. It has so many of my favourite tracks like "the prisoner" "total eclpise" and many many more, but when you get more into the band you'll find other stlyes of the bands unique sound that you may like more. The Number of the Beast shows off their early years stlye very well and "Brave New World" does the same for the re-united style that they now have. My personal favourite is "Somewhere In Time" but you might not like that one as much, then again you might hehe. Give those other two a try "number of the beast" and "brave new world" and tell us how you like them...theres no doubt in my mind that if you liked the first one you wouldnt adore the other :) im glad you thought they were amazing!! they really are amazing :)

Somewhere in time is a great album, the best song by far on that album is Caught somewhere in time, a very fast tempo, with an amzing gallop rhythm bass, amazing solo, great vocals from bruce, its just a good all round song. The you have the "happy" anthem wasted years, which always cheers me up when I'm down. Heaven can wait is a great song, great lyrics, good solo, great backing vocals from some choir. Then the epic Alexander the great, if they used that in history lessons everyone would know everything about him. Well thats my opinion of the Somewhere in time.
I think SSOASS, should be at the top (its my first and Fave album, I first listened to it when i was 2 in 1988), then SIT, then NOTB, then DoD, then Powerslave, then BNW.
I suggest you get Piece of mind, and No prayer for the dying. And some of the live albums, it makes the maiden experience complete.

Well, first of all Adrian Smith is like my guitar idol and "Somewhere in Time" is full of Adrian's tracks and signature sound. The overall tone of the album i like alot. Adrian played really hot Ibanez's and Steve's bass tone was fantastic...probley the best ive ever heard it, not to mention Nicko's stlye of drumming on the album is brutal! The songs overall are some of my top 10 favourites, including the best they ever came up with IMO "Heaven Can Wait" and ive always held that album to a high standard when judging other Maiden albums and still enjoy it the most. Lyrically its one of my favourites as well, with "stranger in a strange lang" "wasted years" and "alexander the great" just really mezmorzising vocal harmonies. I think "the lonliness of the long distance runner" is the heaviest Maiden track and its a shame they only played it live once in Europe on that tour and put it to rest. Being a bass and guitar player myself, i breakdown the riffs and leads and they are some of their most impressive on this record as well. Steve's bass playing on "caught somewhere in time" and "sea of madness" are fantastic (among the others as well). And i think "heaven can wait" alone inspired hundreds of power metal songs with its enchanting "woah ooo ooo" verse in the interlude. Its hard to really expalin "why" something is your favourite...personal taste plays a big role in that, its the most uplifting and energetic Maiden album to me and what brings me the most joy...nothing wrong with that.

Tell me what you think about this theory of Maiden songs. I think that all Maiden songs are either a narrative of some sort, or a rallying cry against some sort of injustice. Of course, the best ones are a combination of both types, but in general you can boil down any of their songs into those two categories.
My favorite narratives:
The Number of the Beast
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Flight of Icarus
My favorite rallying cries:
Die With Your Boots On
2 Minutes to Midnight
Powerslave (sort of)
But the best ones are the combinations of the two. Like "The Trooper" or "Hallowed Be Thy Name." There's a definite story going on, but it also makes a point. That poor guy getting killed by the Russians is a comment on the futility of war, and the death row prisoner comments on the thoughts of a man facing death. I guess in a way most of their songs fit this category, but I thought it would be easier to split them up a bit.
What do you think about this?

But it also teaches a lesson against people who act like they're immortal, only to wind up dead like everyone else. I guess it's a bit of both, but I couldn't think of a third example. Is "Holy Smoke" better for that category?

My favorite narratives:
The Number of the Beast- Still to this day one of my favorite Maiden tracks. An instant classic that has the signature stlye of Steve and Adrian/Davey's leads...this signifies the bands sound.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner- wonderful epic song with well researched lyrics. I think this had to have been one of the most difficult songs (along with Alexander the Great) to compose the way Steve did...some of their most catchy riffs and a woderful vocal job by Bruce.
Flight of Icarus- Shows off how well Bruce and Adrian can write together, they always come up with wonderful songs as a team and this one is their earliest...the music is more simplistic letting Bruce's vocals take the lead in the song and i think thats what makes it so powerful.
My favorite rallying cries:
Die With Your Boots On- one of my top 5 favourite songs the band ever wrote, every bit and piece of it gets you pumped up and into the song. The prechorus is fantastic and has some awquard chords they use when playing it that make it intresting, Steve's usage of "transition" notes in the verse is wonderful and adds alot of flavor to the riff. when i saw this one live last summer i about died!
2 Minutes to Midnight- a real fan favourite, but never one of my favourites. kind of to "rock n roll-ish" during the intro and verse but the chorus and leads make up for it. a better live song that studio track IMO.
Powerslave (sort of)- Bruce took this one on himself and what i dig so much about it is the lyrics. Egyptian mythology being something i am into this is a real trip to listen to under the phryigian scales used by the band, and in typical Maiden fashion the chorus is to die for!! great drumming by Nicko as well!
