Thanks for the info Eddie, but back to the topic. It's true. Nicko's only double bass is for Face in the Sand. If you still don't believe any of us, watch Rock In Rio.

my drummer friend told me that Nicko used "ludwig speed king" single pedals, the same ones Bonham did and that you can get speed on those things that are unthought of on most single pedals...overall, Nicko's drumming is one of a kind :)

^^Because he doesn't live in the UK and it's only available here.
Nicko doesn't use a double bass! He probably has the best bass-drum pedal technique in the world... all rolls etc are done with a single bass drum. You can see on the maiden site, it's got The Wickerman live (Drum cam) and you can see he does the chorus with one foot.
I don't care about the Wickerman, it says all over the place that he used one on Face in the Sand.
http://www.metalmasters.net/i-nicko_mcbrain.html
interview with Nicko taken after the release of DOD, in which he claims he still only uses 1 bass drum pedal because 2 pedals would be too much trouble.
go figure.

It says he only uses a single pedal, not that he's only ever used a single pedal.
The intro is a long intrumental piece with a few Celtic nods and grows into a great crescendo, with Nicko using a double-kick for the first time on an Iron Maiden recording – although he admitted himself that he had suffered a lot playing this song, and would be rather pleased not to have to play it live, which is a shame as it would be a great moment during a concert.

i can see him not using one in the 80's and early 90's but on the chorus of "out of the silent planet" hes doing galloping triplets...and i dont see WHY a drummer would go through all the trouble of using a single bass pedal when they could use the double. a double and a single have two different sounds because of the timing, say what you will about it im not believing it.

I have Rock In Rio and I am fully aware that Face in the Sand was released after Rock In Rio. To be precise it was released on September 9, 2003. But I was clarifying that he doesn't use double bass and was using Rock In Rio as a mock verification. Now if you still don't believe me, then go out and buy the new DVD being released in time for Christmas....GAW!!!
Gaw?
eh... well, i dunno. i DO know that out of the silent planet was with a single bass drum pedal (even though the bass drum is faster then on face in the sand) coz you can hear him opening and closing the hi-hats.

Hey guys,
I love Iron Maiden, but can't say as I know to much about them. Anything specific I should know?
know? ok... there's the greatest band in the history of forever, they've got the best bassists and vocalist in rock/metal today, and probably the best drummer aswell. the guitarists are amazing to (all three of them). the band was founded in 1973 by Steve Harris, called Gypsy's Kiss. The band released it's first album in 1980, and the only members who are still in the band who played on that record is the bassist steve harris and the guitarist dave murray.
that enough for you?

Thx,
I hope I get to know a lot about them. I just did start listening to them, I almost got beat up at a concert when I told a guy i didn't know who they are.
ahah.... there's some background info in my review of the self-titled album in the cd review forum... you should go check it out.

Well, if Iron Maiden's bassist can play with inhuman speed and precision with only two fingers, then I'm sure their drummer can do the same thing with a single bass pedal. This band is used to doing more with less.

I love the songs that Adrian writes, they are so perfectly thought out!!!!
I also Love his Solos becouse they are not just pure showof but they realy fitt the song...... and his wha wha solos!!!!! :naughty:
Gers on the other hand is mostly a Great riff writer!! he also plays Great solos
but I think that he is my favourite becouse he is shuch a great showman  and I love his personality!!!! and I look a little like him :naughty:
Now then Davey:
A GREAT Guitar Player!!!!how is it posible to improvise that kin fast man!!! :amaze:

Not just due to his leads, but his songwriting is much stronger than Davey and Janicks.

Adrian Smith. He's my favourite. I don't even know why :)
maybe because he is the most melodic in the band. and his solos fit songs perfectly.
does anyone know which solos on Dance of Death belong to Adrian? it seems to me as if he wrote all the solos on DOD :)

I like Dave and Adrian equally. They both have a helluvalot more soul beihnd their playing than Janick does. As for the best song, Aces High. Now their best bassist? I dunno could it be Steve Harris? But that's a trick question because he's the bestest bassist ever.

just because he has been in the band the longest, but overall id say Adrian / Janick play just as many on the albums as Davey does. On tour it matters what songs are played, like on the "somewhere on tour" dvd Davey only plays a few leads because alot of the songs they picked are mainly ones Adrian plays leads on, and on Rock in Rio Davey plays the majority of the leads...all a matter of whats picked. But i like Adrian's style of playing, and songwriting more than any other guitarist in the band. IMO hes the strongest asset to Iron Maiden save Steve and Bruce.

the bass licks on Somewhere in Time are every bit are rough to play as the ones on Killers, he gets much more brutal triplets on caught somewhere in time than he did on any Killer's tracks, and how he follows the guitars on the lonliness of hte long distance runner is wonderful. i dont know what the hell your talking about, this comming from a bassiest of many years. EXACTLY!!! like they describe his sound as "a lead bass" , judging that Steve writes the largest majority of the material the guitars are normally written after the bass lines. but in cases like "wasted years" or "sea of madness" where Adrian wrote the whole song, it leaves Steve room to roam with his bass and thow in fills where necessary...which is the part of his playing i like.

I think Davey is the best guitarists in Iron Maiden.
Not for being the best songwriting guitarist, but as a guitarist he leaves the other two in his wake. His solos are far more fluid than Adrians or Janicks, he can rip without it sounding like he's even trying and he knows when to play the melody.
I just like his style more than the other two.
As far as songwriting goes Adrian wins, and Janick wins the live show.
i think murray is the best, simply because practically all his solos are improv, whereas smith sits down and writes em (according to the NOTB dvd, anyway). jannick's little marchy-type thing annoys me. i dunno. i think bruce is great live on RIR, going round on those zip-wire things. mmm - maideny

its funny how if your a diehard Iron Maiden fan you can pick out who's playing what lead.
Davey- legatto style, mainly hammer-on short scale runs.
Adrian- alot of bluesly bends, speed picking, tapping, pull-offs, starts n stops in his leads, pinch harmonics.
Janick- quick picking, sloppy speed leads.
bassismylifecuziamaloser
05-24-2004, 05:13 PM
steve did slow down, but look at players like Flea and Tom Delonge (yes i like early "true punk" blink 182, when they were still just blink). when they slowed down their style, they achieved more success with normal people, because normal people don't care how cool the bass line is, or how complex thissolo is... they care about the SOUND. Look at B.B. King. I guarantee that man does not play one note more than he needs to.

Being 19 and writing the song "Iron Maiden" and beind almost 50 and writing "Paschendale"...i dont see a problem with Steve's speed. You cant blame the chap for playing slower at his age, though the live songs from their earlier years still have the speed of the olden days. As Bruce Bruce used to say " 8 fingers on the bass...Mr.Steve Harris".
ashman
05-25-2004, 09:03 AM
^Well I have heard that some rock bands play the F-beat, which is the speed of what they make "love", so if the band members are young they usually play very fast an dwhen they get older they play slower.
I think Nicko has a good chance at being the best bassist as he did write the bass for new frontier (I know he wrote the bass for one of the songs on DoD, and when he played it to steve, steve said "do you want to play the bass on this song?").
And Nicko only used a double bass pedal on face in the sand.

It's so true it's not even funny. You listen to Holy Smoke and you hear Janick's fast portion of the solo and then you hear something a tad slower and you go, "Hot **** that's Davey all right." I would take Adrian's solos than any of them only because he's probably got the most soul behind his guitar playing than the rest of them.
On to something different. Adrian's first guitar: purchased from Dave Murray (on account they grew up like...half a block from each other) and the action was two inches high off the bastard. The action on my guitar was that high until I reset it.

yeah, Adrian admired Davey alot when he was first playing and Davey taught Adrian his first few chords and Adrain was most impressed with Davey's confisence he had in his playing, i think thats very admirable that Davey took Adrian under his wing and that him and Steve honored Adrian's decision to stay with his band Urchin, when they wanted him to play with them, i think we can all say that everything worked out brilliantly with the band :) what a great group of chaps!

By the way, I agree with you about vocals by Steve and Adrian. but I don't think any of them could reach that note in the end of Aces High chorus. I think Bruce recorded it twice and then put together. what do you think?
FrailandBedazzled1979
05-29-2004, 12:24 PM
part of the reason they dont play Aces High anymore is because Bruce cant even reach it lol, the air raid siren cant wont be shattering anymore glass globes in this lifetime lol. Steve is no vocalist but still chooses to sing on the songs, and Adrian is a great singer...listen to the b-side "reach out" where he sings, very talented singer. He was the vocalist in a band called "Evil Ways" that he was in with Davey before Iron Maiden.
PS: everything on "a real dead one" sounds bad :) not their best live album, Janick ruins alot of Adrian's leads IMO.
btoto
05-29-2004, 02:58 PM
Well actually Janick always ruins Adrian's leads :) why does Janick always change solos during live performances? I think he changes it too much
-----------------
And I downloaded Reach Out (thanks to you Frail :) ^). Wow, Adrian is my favourite in the band, but I didn't know he had such a beautiful voice. I knew that he was a singer, .......wow I'm shocked :)
I liked his voice more than Blayze and Bruce.
Anyway, my favourite Maiden vocals is Paul. His voice is awesome
FrailandBedazzled1979
05-30-2004, 03:50 AM
Paul is not a natuarlly gifted vocalist like Bruce is, but his agression and the way he carries the notes is what made his stay with Maiden so memorable. I like Paul's voice alot and it suited their more energy driven music in the early days, yet i simply can no immagine him singing anything that Maiden evolved into....thats where Bruce comes in. Both are vital to the sound that is Iron Maiden, yet Bruce's voice amazes me...one of my favourite vocalists. I like Adrian's voice more than Blayze for sure, he simply didnt sit to well with me. as far a Janick, i think hes one hell of a riff writer...but easily the third leg lead player. to sloopy for such a well polished band IMO, but what hes written for Iron Maiden is wonderful and i have no complaints other than his versions of Adrian's leads. If you'd like to check out Adrian's band he was in after Iron Maiden (before he re-joined) they are called "Psycho Motel" preety cool music, though i wish Adrian sung on it.
bruce can't do sanctuary nearly as well as paul did (IMO)

ill give Paul that, Sanctuary really is a vocal harmony bult for Paul...but the majority of older songs done by Bruce (like Wrathchild and Running Free for instance) i enjoy alot better. Bringing a new singer to sing another vocalsits style is always difficult, and i belive Bruce does Paul's songs wonderfully with a hint of his own style as well.

trills on some frets, dont know which, while sliding the edge of your hand down the strings, just lightly touching them. you get the trilling sound, and a sliding harmonic over the top. then he switches to a lower string.
dont know what you call this technique though, he uses it on about 3 or 4 songs, cant think which others he uses it in off the top of my head though, one on x factor i think.
about whoever was talking about janicks live solos, i prefer adrian live, his solos are usually almost perfect to the studio one. janick usually just improvises most of the solos, and they usually sound worse and nothing like the studio one. they are sometimes better though, like brave new world on RiR with the added pinch harmonic. daves solos dont sound like on the albums always, but he's been playing them like that for years, like the trooper which he's played the way he does now for years.
about the backing vocals, a lot of the time its just adrian. on songs like Aces high and the trooper, i dont think steve could go that high. plus if youve ever heard him when the others stop singing on Iron maiden and other songs he does do backing vocals on, he isnt the best singer in the band, probably just beats nicko.
if you can get them, theres some bootlegs of adrian singing at an 'entire population of hackney' concert, which was him on vocals and guitar, nicko on drums, and some other people, who did a few gigs. some of their songs (like reach out and that girl) became maiden b-sides for SiT (and Juanita on 7th son i think). his singing live on those isnt as good as on the studio version of reach out though.

Oh yeah, I know what I was gonna ask you lot.
Which live version of Fear of the Dark do you prefer?
The one on Edward the Great, or the one on Best of the Beast (which I believe is Rock in Rio)?
The best of the beast one isn't rock in rio. I think it was recorded at the ishallen in helsinki.

my band and i want to do an iron maiden cover but alot of em have quite difficult solo :upset: so i want a kind of easy solo doesnt really matter about that vocals my singer can reach quite high. we were thinking of out of the silent planet. any other suggestions
your drummer has to be bloody good for out of the silent planet - there's the galloping triplets on the bass drum, but it needs opening hi-hats,s o you can't use a double bass drum pedal.
i suggest running free. the "solo" is fast but easy providing the pick fast. and it's got a rocking drum beat. BumbaBOOM-babumbaBOOMBOOM bumbaBOOM-babumbaBOOMBOOM
etc.

Best version of Fear of the Dark is Live at Donington in 92. Sent shivers down my spine (might have been the rain!) and still does when I listen to the CD.
i say that's the best live album, but fotd ain't to hot on that one. i'm gonna say the released live version (from real live/dead one)

I was a huge Maiden fan.
Funny though.. I recall being sorely dissapointed when I read in an old Creem magazine that Paul Dianno was leaving the band.. and Bruce Dickerson was taking over.. Man I feel old..
Anyways, I have long loved Maiden, but I admit I love the Dianno stuff more than the Dickerson stuff. I dunno. I just thought Dianno's voice fit the original scheme of the band.
Of course, I would be proven wrong with the following releases, up to Powerslave. After that, it got played. But they are talented song writers, and Steve Harris continues to be an inpsiration.
I saw Iron Maiden on the Piece of Mind and Powerslave tours, and I also had the pleasure to see Paul Dianno's Battleground.. though they didn't play any Maiden tunes..
Either way, when I was a kid, I did Maiden jackets. I dunno if anyone remembers that either. It was cool to have a jeans jacket, with painted backs. I still have mine.. It was the cover of the European single release for Number of the Beast. Eddie was standing menacingly, with strings coming from his fingers, and each string hung down to seemingly control a little demon guy.. Like Eddie was the puppet master or something.. Was very cool.
I loved Maiden for their great lyrics, and great songs. I haven't purchased an album since Powerslave though, as I did buy the album after, but I recall being very dissapointed with it.

I had an older brother who loved music, and took me to concerts all the time. I was 12 or 13 when I saw Maiden for the first time, and when I saw the Powerslave tour, I was blown away by the opening band.. Queensryche! They were on the Warning tour..

Hey guys, I'm just getting into Iron Maiden, and I'm going to buy my first Maiden album tomorrow! I consider myself a die-hard metal fan, but have been broke for about 4 months (due to the massive scale buying on guitar and guitar stuffs). So I have yet to buy a Maiden album.
I've heard some Maiden (don't ask which songs or which albums, I can't tell you), and I like it, which is mainly why I'm buying on of their albums. :) Duh.
Anyway, I was wondering what album you would recommend as either their best or the best one to start out with.
Thanks for the help!

Quest for Fire is incredible, lyrical content i think is great because it tells a good tale of how ealry man survived in a harsh landscape. the rhythem riff is killer, not to mention Nicko's great triplets on the ride cymbal!! I like "Revelations" and "Children of the Damned" not because they're slow songs, but because they start out slow and then kick it up a few notches. My favorite part of "Revelations" is the sudden "Dah duh dant!.....Dah duh dant!.......Dunnn Daaannn Doon Dun!" and then it goes off into dual leads. Awesome stuff.
why was this on page 5?

maiden are my all time favourite band and along with metallica they got me into the guitar. i havnt been a fan for that long, i first discovered them after hearing 2 minutes to midnihgt on GTA Vice City about a year ago. since then ive got 6 of their albums. Heres my list of the ones i have ordered from best to worse (although they're all amazing).
1.Powerslave
2.Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
3.Number of the Beast
4.Somewhere in Time
5.Brave New World
6.Dance of Death
i also have the Visions of the Beast DVD.
Peice of Mind is next on my list, ive already downloaded the Trooper and the flight of the icarus.
and don't think that just because dance of death is on the bottom that it isnt a good album, because it definately is, it has my favourite maiden song on it (which i find id hugely underrated), Paschendale.
When are people gonna wake up and see what an amazing song it is?
Man i've got so much to say abou8t iron maiden they are such a great band and unlike metallica (another awesome band, prob my 2nd fav) they havnt gone downhill as they got older, but they are now all over 40 and still making great music and havnt sold out or anything, u gotta admire that.
while we're at it, you could say rainmaker has two soloists (jannick joins davey for the twin-soloey bit).
Also, would do ya'll prefer: The acoustic version of Journeyman (on DOD) or the electric version (on the No More Lies ep)

do you even look at steve and janick? the way they do it at stage, they have to be in shap... and adrian and dave are like they always have been... wandering around and smiling, well, davey atleast :P
adrian has definatley grown oldest.
From seventh son to brave new world, the guy not only grew beard but must have but on a couple of stone. which sucks. also, he's losed his niche as "the one who doesn't play strats"
<3 adrian's ibanez destroyer from live after death video. his les paul in the wickerman video is sweet too (unfortunatley he doesn't use it live)

i'm an idiot, in retrospect
i put strange world as the worst song on iron maiden. GOD **** IT it's my joint-best
worst on that album is probs transylvania
Ashman, infinite dreams is a GREAT song. but all the other songs on the album are just better. that album rocks :D Another life is ok, but not as good as the others (unless i'm thinking of innocent exile :/
I don't like the nomad. oh well.

Whats that i saw Maiden live on the Dance of Death world tour. LAST EVER WORLD TOUR. Nevermind i'll still watch them tour UK still. I personally like Brave New World.
it's not their last ever world tour.
it's just their last HUGE tour.
so instead of doing an 8 month world tour, they'll be doing like 3 or 4 month world tours.
so there. and that means more money can go towards the stage show \m/

And the Geddy and Steve had a bass off? This goes back to a post I had made a few months back. Anyways...I look forwards to hearing yer comments.
i don't 'do' rush.
better question:
burton or steve?
aye, burton was faster, but he couldn't play in tune worth a **** (neither can the rest of them, though :p). And, well, what did burton ever do, creativley, for metallica? not much. what has steve done for maiden? hmm, i wonder [/sarcasm]

good question for the Maiden thread, where we're all unbiased
Harris wins, so much better bass lines (I don't care if Burton could solo better, that doesn't do it for me as much as an interesting bass line)
plus, Harris wrote a whole lot of Maiden's stuff

And, well, what did burton ever do, creativley, for metallica?
I don't know. Half of their first three CDs?
half their first three cds? er... on master of puppets he wrote a little section in orion and a little section in damage inc... i'll get back to you on the other two cds in a sec
Ok, on kill 'em all he wrote pulling teeth. Yeh, played some part in 6 of the songs on ride the lightning, but they could all be as major as he did on master of puppets (which was the intro to damage inc and the middle section of orion)
Now for harris:
Iron maiden: 8/9 tracks (including 5 by himself)
Killers: 11/11 tracks (including 10 by himself)
The Number Of The Beast: 8/9 tracks (incluidng 5 by himself)
So, in metallica's first three ablums cliff contributed to 9 out of 26 tracks, writting one by himslef, where as steve contributed to 27 out of 29 tracks, including 20 by himself.
Heck, i'll go on
Piece of mind: 6/9 tracks, (including 4 by himself)
Powerslave: 4/8 tracks (all by himself, including the 13 mintue 36 second 'rime of the ancient mariner')
Somwhere In Time: 5/8 tracks (including 4 by himself)
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son: 7/8 tracks (inclduing 3 by himself)
No Prayer For The Dying: 7/10 tracks (including 4 by himself)
Fear Of The Dark: 7/12 tracks (including 5 by himself)
The X Factor: 10/11 tracks (including 4 by himself)
Virtual XI: 7/8 tracks (including 4 by himself)
Brave New World: 10/10 tracks (including 1 by himself)
Dance Of Death: 10/11 (including 1 by himself)
What's that - you want statistics as well?
Ok
Steve's contributed to 100 of Maiden's 126 tracks (not including B-sides)
That's nearly 79.5%
Steve's written 54 of Maiden's 126 tracks
That's approximatley 43%
In all the songs that steve's been credited with contributing to, he's written 54% of them by himself.
Now, compare this to cliff.
Cliff contributed to 34% of Metallica's tracks from when he was alive, writing just 4% of Metallica's tracks by himself.
So, Cliff wrote half of their first three three albums, then? He contributed to just over a third. Steve contributed to 93% of Maiden's first albums.
