ive been playing for about a year and half (no lessons, all self taught)
EDIT: meh i have about 135 posts in here
I have lessons, but it's mainly theory and whatnot, which is good because I can do most songs on my own.
Though last night, my teacher and I were attempting to go through "Scavenger Of Human Sorrow" by Death. Go get the tab for that, good times .

the fourth one was taken during his solo in NOTB at RiR, if you watch the whole solo he looks rather disordly throughout it. 'Tis most humerous :)

Yeah. There have been a lot of penguin user titles/user names around (including a couple of death metal penguins).
I think I'm the original penguin here though :)
To keep this topical, what odds would you give me for the word "Penguin" being somewhere in the lyrics of Iron Maiden's next album?

Hopefully by the end of this week.
He's having trouble with the fills, given that Nicko has 9 toms and 12 (I think) cymbols, compared to Chris's 3 toms and 2 cymbols.
I'll go over to his tomorrow to "produce" for him, I think.

I don't think we should do that, first person to mix it, all the levels will be off and unless you want to be sending huge mix files across the net (I use Cool Edit Pro, so I don't know if that's compatible with Audacity).

Perhaps. I can handle it so long as I know what parts I'm mixing.
Incidentally, Chris doesn't want to do an internet recording project (he thought it was a live project when I asked) because he's recording for four bands already...anyone else want to do drums?

We could MIDI the drums or summat like that.
If I was mixing, I'd split up the tracks this way;
Ash Solo
Ash Rhythm
Ash Acoustic (if needed)
Crag Solo
Crag Rhythm
Crag Acoustic (if needed)
Andy Solo
Andy Rhythm
Andy Acoustic (if needed)
Creeping Deth Bass
Creeping Deth Acoustic (if needed)
Drums
Vocals
If we were gonna be fancy, we could split the drums up into two tracks; Left and Right, it's hard, but it's cool. Those are all the tracks that I could think of, there might be more if we want synths .etc

Hi, I'm a big Maiden fan, I hav all of their studio albums apart from their self titled. My favourites are Powerslave and Brave New World. I love the feeling of Powerslave, I'm not sure what it is about that album but it's awsome. I also love Brave New World for its somewhat progressive style.

Hey, whats going on?
For an English project right now, we must chose a song and change it into a story. I obviously chose Dance Of Death :).
My teacher orignally said that the story had to be 200-300 words but when I told her the Dance Of Death lyrics were 435 words she told me to write whatever and then she'll check to see if it's ok.
So basicly I've come to one of the few points in my life when I wanna do a school assingment. I also don't think I coulda picked a better song, DoD is already basicly a story so I just basicly have to elaborate apon that which is written and then I have an amazing story, as long as I do it properly.
Anyways probably around next Friday I should have it ready and perfected so I'll show it to you guys and see what you think.

No, it was like a big transit van jobby. I didn't have my camera phone on me either, but I was with two of my friends, so they can back me up here if more evidence is needed... :p

So...here's my current rough copy of the story, I've yet to really fix anything up so if it sucks really bad just tell me...I also just used Bruce as the main character, rather than make up a new character. I always picture Bruce being the main character when I listened to the song anyways.
__________________________________________________ _______________________
On a summer night the life of one man would be changed forever. Bruce Dickinson walked out of a bar as the moon shone upon his dark world. After talking to a friend about the day’s events and having only one drink, he decided it was time to set out for home. With the fresh air of the everglades all around him, he walked down the road from the bar, in the direction of his home.
As he walked he didn’t notice an ever following shadow, an ever following presence, from the tree’s beside him. They watched him as he walked, gazing at the stars, laughing out loud to himself about the conversation he previously had with his friend. The wind blew and rustled the tree’s and leaves around him, and then that’s when it happened.
A stick in the tree’s beside Bruce snapped, causing him to turn and look right at a hooded figure. He dropped to his knee’s in fear, hoping that what he saw was a dream. The figure rushed towards him and pulled him back into the tree’s.
When Bruce opened his eyes he saw the unbelievable. A ring of fire in the middle of a forest clearing. Within the circle stood twelve hooded figures, beckoning towards Bruce. He could hear their rasp, thin voices calling his name, telling him to enter the circle of flame. The thirteenth figure, the one who had grabbed Bruce, pulled him back to his feet and walked into the flame, where he met the others.
Feeling drawn towards the thirteen inside the circle of fire, Bruce found himself being pulled, as if by an invisible force towards the flame. He stepped into the fire, and was amazed to find that there was no pain at all. Now inside the circle, Bruce once again heard the rasp, thin voice of these undead. They told him to dance, to dance along with them, to dance the circle of death.
He danced along and sang along with them. While part of him tried to leave, but his body was like a puppet, being controlled by a greater being, by a puppeteer. As he danced a few of the undead began to argue and out broke a fight amongst them. At this point the trance which had seemed to be upon Bruce was broken, and he ran, he ran knowing now was his only chance.
Running as fast as he could, like the wind, and he did not dare look back . Home was where he was headed and he knew he must get there fast. Behind him the fight stopped as they noticed he had left them. Now with the sound of the voices again calling his name from behind, Bruce looked straight ahead and ran.
To this day, one thing he will always remember is the night he danced with the dead. The circle of fire will always burn brightly in his memories and the undead, their ever lasting voices stuck in his head, calling out his name again and again. Calling out his name, beckoning him to dance with them again. To join into the dance of death.

 i've just been on a website that says the DOTR dvd won't be released until November 22nd
That sucks.
HMV.co.uk (http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/simpleSearch.do?pGroupID=5&simpleSearchString=death+on+the+road&primaryID=5) still says October 24th.
I'm thinking: should we use the drum track of HBTN that Nick recorded for MXaiden, instead of doing the Trooper, then we can find someone (or persuade Nick) to do more drums for us later?

Hey guys I noticed that alot of songs were written by only one band member. Does this mean they do absolutely everything? Including solos? Like for instance how could Bruce write a solo thats as good as Dave or Adrian(maybe Janick but ive never heard him play), I mean hes not even a guitarist.
One more question. What guitar does Adrian play on the Number Of The Beast video clip?
Glass Onion
10-03-2005, 05:46 AM
Bruce does play guitar. I've read interviews where he said when things where getting bumpy with Maiden he started presenting ideas which where mainly acoustic. Also on one of the concerts on the Early Days DVD during Revelations you see him play a guitar to help out for abit.
Harris wrote everything on most of their older songs apart from the guitar solo's which where wrote by the guitarest, The same happened with other members who wrote the song with only their name at the credits I believe though I'm not as certain.
EDIT: Expanded up.

Yeah we could do, but we'd need the full drum track done, since the drumtrack doesn't include the intro...

Hey thanks. But if a song is shown as written by one person, does that mean the riffs too? Cos every Iron Maiden song's riff has that "Maiden" feel to it yet its always a different writer.
The melody, song structure and rhythm are written by one person, so it's basically the whole song. Sometimes someone else does the lyrics, and the guitarists do their solos, but if Harris wrote a song on his own, he basically did it all.

All you'd need to do for that is play along with the original song, and match a bell up to that also. Then you got your intro.

Anyone go the Nicko Mcbrain drum clinics in the UK last week? I went and got my Eddie bass drum head signed, he held it up to the audience when he spotted it. (I was on the second row). He played with a guitarist and bassist from the 'We Will Rock You' shows, they covered several Led Zep/Maiden/Jimi Hendrix songs. Brilliant night.

But still both Nicko, the owner of the drum shop that hosted it, and the owner of Premier drums all commented on how good it looked, and how it was a good idea to do that. Absolutely amazing night, they opened with Led Zep - Moby Dick. Mind blowing.

I know a lot about them, but since I know **** all about anything drumming, I want to know how you guys think Nicko compares to other drummers (in an unbiased impartial opinion). He's got style, creativity, and he just generally puts good use to his kit for all his songs. His personality also goes along well with that.

He considers them 'un-drummerish', and generally just disagrees with using them. He is EXTREMELY good at single bass, he can play a lot of double bass stuff with one foot, as demonstrated at his clinic. But people just summarize his playing by his single bass skill, but his stickwork is absolutely amazing too, he blew me away at the clinic. I'd rate him higher than most metal drummers, plus he can play many different styles.

Travis has amazing stick speed and accuracy and a very distictive style, which would make many a drummer very jealous.
I'm told by someone who knows a heck of a lot more about this then me, that Travis' speed and accuracy are more or less unrivalled...I put Nicko ahead of him because he's not far behind on speed or accuracy, but he has a more distintive style, and isn't leant on so much to make the song special.

Well I guess this means, from what you've said here, that Travis Barker is officially overrated!
Seriously, Tim Alexander from Primus kicks Travis' skinny tattooed ***, and he's not even the most distinctive member of that band! And Weekend Warrior is overrated. I still think Childhoods End is a great song from that album, but no one seems to like it much. Its got a great intro to it.
when did Bruce say that?
Says it on the Early Days DVD if I remember correctly.

I take it you're not a drummer? :D
"The Wicker Man" is one of the greatest metal drum tracks of all time. McBrain plays with so much groove and feeling...he's a huge inspiration to me. Some of the single bass stuff he does is just incredible (everything up until Dance of Death was single bass).
Anyways, someone sent me guitarpro. Although I'm not a guitarist, I am a keyboard player, and it's been fun going through some ole Maiden tracks and trying to learn the guitar parts on piano. The intro to Hallowed Be Thy Name is a BITCH.
The Wicker Man is easy despite the insane bass drum work. I play along with it all the time and the only thing I Don't do the same is the bass drum, just because it's to hard for me to do.

I love The Wicker Man, period...I'm not a drummer. :p
Come to think of it, I should learn that on guitar...tis a bit easier than other Maiden songs.

the vocals in the chorus are just awsome...you just cant help but sing along "YOUUURRRREEEE TIMMMMEEEEEE WIILLLLLL COMMMMEEEEE!!!" ....maybe
the wicker man is great, but i prefer the live version to the studio, the Whoa-oh-oh-oh bit sounds a bit cheesy IMO on the studio version.

Nicko has his own style. He's all around amazing, he's absaloutly stunning. Clive wasn't any of this, but he was still also good. Hell Clive was an awesome drummer, but he didn't seem to stick out like Nick does.
Nicko's a monster.

My band cover The Wicker Man. It's really wierd because we normally do punk rock...I changed the pre-choruses though.
You watch the world exploding everysingle night
Dancing in the sun a newborn in the light
Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death
Hello to eternity and live for every breath
You watch the world exploding everysingle night
Dancing in the sun a newborn in the light
Brothers and their fathers joining hands to make a chain
The shadow of the wicker man is rising up again
Becomes:
You watch the Ducklings* playing every single night
The greatest punk rock band to ever see the stage lights
Say goodbye to rubbish bands and say goodbye to pop
With George** on our side, we're gonna hit the top
You watch the Ducklings* playing every single night
The greatest punk rock band to ever see the stage lights
We're online at Suicidal Ducklings dot TK
Log on to the website when you get home today
* Ducklings=Suicidal Ducklings, my band
** George=Our mascot. A kind of aquauatic Eddie.
It's lots of fun, and really shameless.

imo can i play with madness sounds the best i have ever heard it live on maiden englands.
Death on the road's "can i play with madness" was quite disapointing. The backing vocals ruined it for me, still a awesome song live though.
Anyway, i would recommend anyone to buy maiden england, its probably my favorite, and i have seen every dvd they put out.
also to crag: i have also been getting into a ton of blaze aswell (considering i have just bought x factor and virtual xi) hes a ton better then i expected.

Steve isn't the best backing singer. Nor is Nicko...I think he has a go from time to time.
It's wierd, when I listen to LADonnington the backing vocals sound much better, but then I guess it's a two, not three part harmony.

^^^i think this was posted a few pages back but it doesnt matter anyway, its a new tribute cd with the likes of anthrax, motorhead, kiss, acdc, judas priest and tons more
another interesting note is that derek riggs will paint the cover :):):):)
"The cover of every official IRON MAIDEN album has featured a zombie called "Eddie." Eddie has been painted by artist Derek Riggs for 20 years. "Numbers from the Beast" cover art was naturally painted by Riggs and is a must-have for any MAIDEN fan."
they seriously need riggs to come back and paint the album covers again. Dance of death's cover was pitiful.
