Blaze Video:

That was painful. It was the Trooper, and it still managed to be the worst Maiden song I have ever heard.

Blaze had no stage presence, his singing was mediocre, and Janick butchered Adrian's solo.

Thank goodness they are better now :D

I picked up 7th Son... recently and it's great. It's a concept album right? If so, can someone explain to me the concept. Thanks.

The concept is slightly woolly, but heres the vague lowdown:

Moonchild: 7th son (note: not 7th son of a 7th son.....just 7th son) is born. Good and evil will struggle over him and he will be tempted by both. The seventh son has mild occult powers, not the full power of HIS 7th son later on.

infinite dreams: The 7th son has disturbing dreams where he sees into the future. He is tempted to look further and further into the future to see what happens when he dies. He is horrified when he sees that he will spend eternity in the afterlife and never live again. (PS this is possibly my favourite lyric of all time)

can i play with madness: link to the concept is slightly tenuous in this one, i think that the 7th son is consulting a prophet over whether it is fine to concieve a 7th son and therefore release great power. He begins to become enslaved and tempted by his powers

The evil that men do: 7th son concieves his seventh son, therefore sinning as the 7th son of a 7th son leads a tortured existance.

7th son of a 7th son: this ones fairly obvious, similar to moonchild but this time its the birth of the 7th son of a 7th son rather than his father.

The prophecy: the child is now a young boy and tries to warn his fellow villagers of an impending natural disaster which he forsees. (volcano or something i think). They dont believe it and when it does eventually happen they accuse him of causing it with his powers, and he leaves the village. (think hes kicked out or something).

The clairvoyant: The 7th son leads a solitary life, harbouring his powers and seeing the future. Im not sure why but here i always imagine him gradually twisting into the disfigured eddie portrayed on the front cover as he becomes more and more powerful.

only the good die young: this isnt directly connected to the tale, but it more of a 'moral of the story' kind of song, reprising all of the themes covered so far.

Wow that took longer than i thought....theres a lot of speculation involved but many hardcore maiden fans would agree with me on this one i think. Bruce dickenson has once stated that "seventh son has no story....its about good and evil, heaven and hell, just like any other iron maiden album" but steve and the others seem to view it as a propper concept album. The band has provided very little info on it...i think its up to the fans to work out.

Frail, cancel that bid NOW. That Japan CD is just a bootleg that can be obtained for FREE through a Maiden Direct Connect hub or by trading... you're being ripped off. There's an amazingly good bootleg from Chile floating around on the net - same setlist, great performance, superb quality - that you can just download. I'll track down the link if you want.

According to MaidenFans.com, IRON MAIDEN's recently issued "No More Lies" souvenir EP has entered the singles chart in following countries:

Hungary: #1
Spain: #2
Finland: #3
Italy: #10
Ireland: #25
Canada: #34
Germany: #36
France: #70
Switzerland: #93

Due to the EP's extensive content, "No More Lies" did not qualify for the U.K. singles charts, where IRON MAIDEN have traditionally performed extremely well.

As previously reported, the "No More Lies" souvenir EP features the track "No More Lies", the seven-minute epic from the "Dance Of Death" album, plus special mixes of "Journeyman" and "Paschendale" as well a live video of the band's performance of "No More Lies" from the sold-out "Dance Of Death World Tour".

According to MaidenFans.com, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson announced during an appearance on MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" that bassist Steve Harris would shortly begin work on a "Dance of Death Tour" DVD. In addition, Bruce mentioned that he would be releasing a solo "Best Of" DVD (including live footage) sometime before the end of the year.

album...id list them like this!!!

1. Somewhere in Time
2. Brave New World
3. The Number of the Beast
4. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
5. Piece of Mind
6. Dance of Death
7. Powerslave
8. Iron Maiden
9. No Prayer for the Dying
10. Killers
11. Fear of the Dark
12. Virtual XI
13. The X Factor

live albums:

1. Live After Death
2. Beast over Hammersmith
3. Rock in Rio
4. Live at Donnington
5. A Real Live / Dead one

Thats just me and what i like...Somewhere in Time to me is flawless, id say five of my top 10 Iron Maiden songs are on there (heaven can wait, the lonliness of the long distance runner, caught somewhere in time, stranger in a strangeland and wasted years)...Adrian being my favourite member of the band, had alot of input on this album which enhances it for me. Not to mention the bands tone (bass, guitars, drums, vocals) is just wonderful...some of the heaviest they have ever sounded.

PS: this in no way at all disregards my love for any of their albums, i love them all to death...song for song, just if i had to choose...they would go like that. UP THE IRONS!!

Nicko_McBrian83

for me it would have to be in this order:

1)Brave new world
2)Somewere in time
3)Powerslave
4)The number of the beast
5)Piece of mind
6)Seventh Son of a Seventh son
7)Dance of death
8)No prayer for the dying
9)Fear of the dark
10)Killers
11)Virtual XI
12)The X factor

man did i ever have problems doing that list, they are all so good, had a real problem choosing the number one and number two spot, and when i saw dance of death sitting at the number 7 spot i was shocked beacuase i love that album just as much as the ones at number 3. anyhow, you gotta love maiden

Yes, Harris' voice isnt quite the air raid siren! He was all they had left after H left the band, who's voice if you ask me is remarkable.

my only problem with Raising Hell was that Bruce and Janick were so hard to hear. Not to mention the tone of the guitars was weak, as i think it was the entire tour in 92' 93.

Even though its reached new heights,
I rather like the restless night.
Makes me wonder, makes me think,
There's more to this I'm on the brink.
It's not the fear of what's beyond
It's just that I might not respond
I have an intrest almost craving
But would I like to get to far in?

Mainly those because 7th Son was the last album I listened to and Infinite Dreams is my fav song from that album.

Lyrics.
From Flight of Icarus:
Now the crowd breaks and young boy appears
Looks the old man in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of God my father I fly.
His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the wings of a dream.
Now he knows his father betrayed
Now his wings turn to ashes to ashes his grave.

Just awesome, the way it is sung.

I also love the first verse of out of the silent planet:
Withered hands, withered bodies begging for salvation
Deserted by the hand of gods of their own creation
Nations cry underneath decaying skies above
You are guilty, the punishment is death for all who live
The punishment is death for all who live.

what reasons do you all have for liking dickinson better than dianno? ive seen threads about it and im usually one of maybe two people out of 40 to say diannos better. i like dianno better because of his tone, the grunge in his voice, the way some of his extended notes turn to growl type things (ex. 1:35 - 1:39 in Killers) and his voice i think fits the music better, and its easier to listen to for an entire album. i could list the things that he does with his voice that i love enough to put him at #1 so easily, but it would take forever because he does soo much. hes my favorite metal singer of all time!

Steve Harris is the best song writer EVER in the music biz. And one of the greatest bass players. It's so amazing how Steve can write some of the best lyrics in the world! Take Out of the Silent Planet (I accuse you, before you know the crime it's all too late) Its just hauntingly chilling how he writes. And how he can take a piece of history, and tuen it into a peice of music that kicks butt! Pashendale and Monsegure for exp. Maiden really saved me from todays crap.
I say today's music is awefull! No talent what so ever! Its bands like: Maiden, Dream Theater, and Queensryche. Who tells people how to rock and write REAl lyrics. and actually have melodic bass lines. Todays crap has only gggggg aaaaaa bbbbbbb over and over and over again. today's bass players have no imagination. Thank the Lord for Iron Maiden! The Savior of Rock!

P.S. Nirvana did not save rock, they ruined it

what reasons do you all have for liking dickinson better than dianno? ive seen threads about it and im usually one of maybe two people out of 40 to say diannos better. i like dianno better because of his tone, the grunge in his voice, the way some of his extended notes turn to growl type things (ex. 1:35 - 1:39 in Killers) and his voice i think fits the music better, and its easier to listen to for an entire album. i could list the things that he does with his voice that i love enough to put him at #1 so easily, but it would take forever because he does soo much. hes my favorite metal singer of all time!

its opinion, all opinions. Dianno in terms of his actual voice, has nothing on Bruce. Paul cant hit the notes nor get the emotion Bruce can get, but Pauls energy when singing was his strong suit. Overall, Bruces voice is a signature part about Maiden and they wouldnt have achieved the success they did without him, not to mention a number of their great songs were written or co-written by Bruce, he had alot more input in the albums he was in than Dianno did. Deal with it, Dianno is gone and the fans prefer Bruce.

i love this lyric from Heaven Can Wait:

"i can't believe that really my time has time, i don't feel ready there's so much left undone, and it's my soul and i'm not gonna let it get away...heaven can wait, heaven can wait till another day!!" -Steve Harris 1986

Dianno voice did suit the first and second albums, but when bruce sings songs of the first album they usually sound pretty crap (with exceptions). I suppose the lyrics were written for that specific singer, because if you listen to X-Factor and Virtual XI, they aren't that bad, but they are just rubbish maiden albums, if you get what I mean.

My fave lyric is from Paschendale:

"Cruelty has a human heart
Everyman does play his part
The terror of all the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still"

Pretty poignant
I also love the lyrics from No Prayer for the Dying.
I also think that Steve Harris doesn't really try to get the song across by the words but by the music, which is one of the main reasons why I love them.

Bruce is a great vocalist, probably my favorite. But Steve's bass playing and lyrics make me happy too, because I'm a bassist and such.

I recently got Piece of Mind, and I think it's great. I had to fly on a few airplanes in the past week, and listening to "Flight of Icarus" while in the air is surreal to say the least, and freaking awesome and emotionally moving to put it best.

Funny Maiden Story...

Tonight i saw Children of Bodom and Iced Earth in St.Louis, MO and in between bands they played "heaven can wait", "stranger in a strange land", "wasted years" and "two minutes to midnight" and i was singing so loud, that about 20 other die hard Maiden fans joined in and before ya know it we had half the pit area (about 100 people) all chanting "heaven can waaaaiiiittt". no one sang along with me on the other two songs excpt for "two minutes to midnight", but that didnt stop me. lol.

Hey Everyone
What are your favourite Iron Maiden songs,
1.In terms of Vocals
2.In terms of guitars.
3.In terms of Bass
4.In terms of Drums

Fire away Maiden Fans!

1. Thin Line Between Love and Hate springs to mind for this one.
2. Paschendale, so many great riffs in one song, and all 3 guitarists get a solo.
3. Phantom of the Opera, one of Harris's most impressive basslines.
4. Dream of Mirrors, or the classic but simple beat to Running Free.

That sounds really cool Frail, but you shouldn't be able to be heard over bands, you must have one crazy loud voice, or they hadn't put on the PA system :p

Fave lyrics would also have to be paschendale.

My favorite lyrics would have to be from "The Trooper" or "Hallowed Be Thy Name." I've only heard two entire albums plus "Phantom of the Opera," but I would still go with the latter for most impressive bassline. You have to play that beginning riff with two fingers because the beat just doesn't work with three-finger triplets (like in The Trooper), so it's really tough to nail.

I heard Maiden hasn't played "Flight of Icarus" since the Powerslave tour because Bruce and Steve had a big argument about it (something concerning the tempo?). Too bad, because that's a really good song. Even though a better choice for a single from that album would have to be "The Trooper."

the thing is about their newer shït is that they have three guitarists. now, i agree fully that their newer shït is just as good, if not better, than before. but, three guitarists wipes out the bass in the recording. maiden's sound is a heavy bass (probably because steve harris writes all the songs, and hes a fücking savage). all i hear in the wicker man from the bass is the popping. i say get rid of janick gers and go back to their 80's lineup, when they recorded most of their best shït. janick gers is a good guitarist, and wrote what is perhaps maiden's best song, be quick or be dead, but he isn't needed anymore, because they got adrian back. o well

^ hahah that made me laugh, good one.

Now I have a question for everyone:

What do you think is Iron Maiden's most underrated song/s?

I think there are two. The first is Purgatory off the Killers album. This is a good fun rocker with a cathcy chorus and the pre-chorus is also cool. I think it goes underated because most people think Killers is probably the worst album of Maiden's golden years and its far up in the track list on Killers.

The second I think is Still Life off the Piece of Mind album. The album alone I think is quite underrated. Still Life is right after one of Maiden's best and most recognizable tracks: The Trooper. It's got a great verse and a really catchy chorus; almost as much as Flight of Icarus. It also contains an awesome solo (like most Maiden songs though).

You don't have to write all that i did but im just wondering.

I bought NOTB recently, and have borrowed 7th son from a freind. I was completely blown away when I heard the whole thing all the way through, because there really isn't a song that is less than amazing on it. Has to overtake BNW as my favourite Maiden album, although not by much.

Steve Harris: "So, now you get to find your first band and say, 'Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so.' " Then he'd run away laughing like a maniac and finish the DVD he's working on.

I've been a Maiden fan since kindergarten (Literally). Recently I've been hearing people and columnists say that English Black/Goth Metal band, Cradle Of Filth, is the new generations answer to Iron Maiden, mainly because their British, have a unique singer, deal with somewhat Satanic themes, and have covered "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Fear Of The Dark". Now I think CoF is a great band, but saying something like that is a bit much. Has anyone else heard this, what do you think?

HondoII

CoF cant compare to Iron Maiden

FrailandBedazzled1979
05-07-2004, 03:50 AM
^^^^

COF are diehard Maiden fans, but dont play anyting like Iron Maiden. Though some of their harmonizations im sure came from being avid Iron Maiden fans. COF's cover of "hallowed be thy name" is incredible, a good black metal twist on an old classic without losing the key sound of the song. and COF dont sing about satanism in the least bit, Dani is more into depressing gothic love stories...though his ways of writing lyrics hardley show unless you pay attention to them....

but most importantly, Iron Maiden are a more tight knit band and i like them better in all aspcts :) , but i still love Cradle.

Mick

I play them as equal-length notes, so I call them triplets. "The Trooper" uses triplets with the last note in each triplet accented, and "Run to the Hills" uses an eigth note followed by two sixteenths for a "gallop rhythm." That's how I tell the difference.

FrailandBedazzled1979

Dickenson era is without a doubt their greatest. it had the most material, the best of their material, and contuines to be wonderful. Di'anno's era was great as well, but i doubt they would be taken where they are today with him. Paul isnt the song writer Bruce is nor has the voice that solitified the band's sound. Blayze had his moments, but they are easily the weakest of the Maiden albums.

**FLASH!!**

has anyone in here read "The Da Vinci Code" yet? its a story about the catholic church's cover up for the truth behind Jesus Christ and the real reason behind the holy grail...if not i suggest it.

what does this have to do with Iron Maiden? well ill tell you!! I was listening to "Montsegur" earlier and noticed the lyrical content in the song realtes to many topics discussed in the book:

1. the templar knights and their true mission
2. catholic church's pope killing to hide the truth
3. secret sociesties ("what secrets they took to their grave" and "to die and be free")
4. the old testament
5. the holy grail's inspiration on the catholics

if anyone has read the book, "Montsegur" makes so much more sense (not that it didnt before). Steve Harris is very well knowledged in this subject matter as i am now aware of, and anyone intrested in the topic should check out the book and re-read the lyrics to "Montsegur" the way Steve wrote the lyrics is simpley breath-taking when you have a good understanding of the topic....-Frail

If you got the programme from the DoD tour and look at the montsegur song, It explains what they were trying to get across, it even explains the line:
"The eye in the triangle smiling...." as reference to the roswell cover up.

I have to admit montsegur isn't the greatest song musically, but it has to be the most researched song which makes it a masterpiece.

I defintelty think Maiden are Heavy metal 'cos they started (along with other bands) of the New Wave of British HEAVY Metal.

Iron Maiden have power metal-ish sounding songs at times, like "heaven can wait" and "sun and steel" but are not power metal. They influenced ALOT of power metal bands for sure but lack alot of important elements that would make them power metal, overall...Iron Maiden > any metal band so it dosent matter! lol

Clive was great, more of an agressive power drummer...but with Maiden's sound when Bruce hit the band they became more melodic and less agressive (good change IMO) and Nicko's triplets on the ride and galloping double bass fits the band like a glove.

er... he doesn't use a double bass. never has and never will. Yes, even on "face in the sand" and "the wickerman", it's all one foot.

Nicko didn't use a double bass till 20 years after he joined the band.

like i said, how it fits the band "now" i couldnt immagine clive playing on Brave New World or on Dance of Death...and it sure Nicko used double bass on Caught Somewhere in Time, approx. 3 years after he was in the band. basically, i dont see Clive sound being necessary for how Iron Maiden came to sound as their careers went on.

Nicko doesn't use a double bass! He probably has the best bass-drum pedal technique in the world... all rolls etc are done with a single bass drum. You can see on the maiden site, it's got The Wickerman live (Drum cam) and you can see he does the chorus with one foot.
