i cant find it anywhere...

Look for the remasters. They put "a real live one" and "a real dead" one into as two-disc set, simply titled "A real live dead one"...i know its confusing, you may have seen it and just not known.

Okay, so I was sitting on the bus this morning, listening to NOTB. Some other kid takes off his headphones and lets everyone else listen to it because he can't figure out what Cradle of Filth song he was listening to. Now, I had just finished listening to "Hallowed Be Thy Name" so I thought that may be it, and it was!

However, this one kid just had to say: "That's a great song, but the original version sucks."

!

Luckily someone else put him in his place: "If it wasn't for Maiden there wouldn't even be a Cradle of Filth, or any of those other bands you listen to!"

Fool.

The Cradle version i thought was wonderfully done. great leads at the end, wonderful drumming, and they gave it a nice black metal touch without straying from the classic sound of it.

as for best live cd by them......easily "live after death".

I personally think that album is one of their best, it's got that Celtic sound to it. I've been addicted to "Dance of Death" and "Face In the Sand" for like 3 weeks now.

Lord of Sword
02-06-2004, 10:24 AM
i think its one of their best, easily the best of the 90s (although the x factor and bnw are the only real competitors for that title). it has got a celtic sound on some of the songs. the 3 albums before it were like that though, and this one is different, which some heavier songs and a different sound. i like the whole celtic thing, but hopefully they'll have moved further away from that on the next album, like they started with this one.
paschendale is my favourite off the album. that intro riff is supposed to sound like distant artillery or something, like the riff after is supposed to sound like an artillery barrage. one of my favourite riffs off the album aswell. plus it was amazing live and contains janick's best ever solo.
all the songs on it are some of my favourites, except wildest dreams. but it was made as a single and to promote the album i suppose. overall its probably my 3rd favourite album, after somewhere in time and powerslave.

2 things - maiden predate power. theyre classified as true metal sometimes. i like the sound of that too. also. im really happy coz today i was rumaging through my mum's record collection and some of her brother and sister's stuff was in there and my late uncle had a copy of number of the beast on vinyl! so i took it home. he would have wanted me to have it. i am so depressed that i never got to meet him.. i reckon we would have had such a good time together.... anyway! point is that i got MAIDEN ON VINYL and its like the bes album too. :):):):)

that song is one that i think defines Maiden's sound. The "woo ooo ooo" chanting, uplifint chorus, triplets in the verse, long musical interlude with solos by both adrian and davey, and a long outro...Maiden to the max.

Its usually easy to tell the difference with Iron Maiden leads. Davey plays with his neck pick up and is more meliodic, uses hammer ons, and is very legatto. Adrian can either be very bluesly, string bends, or he can be the speed demon with long runs and blayzing picking. Janick, although a great riff/songwriter is a third leg lead player, and he is generally a speedpicker and sloopy in his leads both in studio and live.

JMetallica
02-09-2004, 08:07 PM
Brave New World is indeed a stronger album. I find that Dance of Death lacks a high percentage of quality songs and that some of them made it on there simply to beef up the track listing up. Also, most of the songs seem to be just a little less well writen than previous efforts. One of Maidens weakest albums in my opinion.

ARGH! I hate that paschendale riff also.

FrailandBedazzled1979
02-09-2004, 08:12 PM
I think that for being a bands 13th studio album it is perfect. The fact that Steve and the boys can still crank out good music for this long, so consistantly, is amazing to begin with...now that they have gotten to the point in their career where they have "Nothing to Prove" its more about good songwriting and overall enjoyment for themselves with broadening thier sound. They have kept their classic sound without being repetative vocally and lyrically, not to mention becoming very good at "word painting" with the guitars on the choruses.

Overall, people are to hard on bands later in their career. Writing the same album over and over just to please the "original" fans bore both the band, and alot of fans who respect and enjoy all their efforts over the years, reagardless of lineup changes or directions they have taken. Dance of Death is a wonderful album and im proud to have it be appart of Iron Maiden's ledgendary legacy. enough said, if you dont appriciate it...thats your loss.

I hate to say this, but I think there is a tie for greatest British Band. It's between Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. I can't decide who's better. Halford and Dickenson have awesome voices, and the talent of the two bands are equal in my eyes. I haven't seen either live, though, so I think that would be the deciding factor. Is Maiden touring this summer? I already plan on seeing Anthrax, Priest, and possibly Ozzfest, but I'm not sure.

if oyu break down Priest and Maiden, its a preety close matchup overall. Vocally, its all what you prefer...both Bruce and Rob have remarkable voices, that are distinct and godlike, guitars....to hard to judge, in riffs....leads...solos, they are evenly matched in my book. Bass, Steve destroys Ian Hill...no base for compaison at all. Drums, Clive was a powerhouse like Les Binks was, and Dave Holland was more of a "filler" drummer, but Nicko really enhances Maiden's sound with his stlye of drumming, and Scott Travis is just youy typical "run of the mill" double-bass junkie IMO. Songwriting, again...its all what you prefer. I think JP have to many filler songs on to many of their albums, while Maiden really do not, plus i feel Steve's style of writing is much more diverse (with album themes and styles) than KK n Glens. Lyrically, Priest are what define heavy metal, while Maiden are based more around history and ledgend...which is alot more impressive than singing about heavy metal in general.

my vote will ALWAYS be with Maiden over Priest, but i would never say that either are a better band.

Like, for me, BNW is very sort of powerful, crisp and cold, but DOD is more mysterious, bringing out the celtic acoustic bits.

Anyone else find this sort of thing?

OMG...i was at a used cd shop today and they were playing "best of the beast" well, "virus" came on ...so i walked behind the counter and changed the song and the people were like "what are you doing man" so i pointed at the guy and said "i refuse to listen to a Maiden song without Dickenson on vocals" and the guy said "fair enough" and gave me a high five lol.

thats 'kin childish, i take it you dont listen to Iron Maiden or killers then?

Actually yes i do. Piece of Mind always seemed kind of dark to me and the cover did too. Powerslave has a brighter cover and the songs just a like that in a way... kinda hard to explain, but I know what you mean.

oh... your one of them...

even the music from the Blayze era wasnt up to Maiden standards. Give or take a handful of tracks from both albums. "man on the edge" is identical to The Number of The Beast, and blood on the worlds hands falls appart after Steve's bass intro. I couldnt have given those albums a more positive attempt the many times ive listened to them. Their voice was gone when Bruce left, and the band did as best they could but it just isnt what id call worthy Maiden material. i know to many people who aggree with me to say otherwise.

Dunno if this has been mentioned before in this forum but im sure many people hear at the end of songs (any band) players talking or dropping instruments etc. haha. Just wondering if anyone has noticed if someone has heard the band talking at the end of a song - The last track of brave new world, the thin line between love and hate(awesome song), i heard nicko mcbrain talking, well i think its him.
After the epic song ends(make sure volume is up) i can easily hear one of the members saying "oh i f*cking missed it" and the other maiden members laughing and repeating this comment.
I found this to be quite amusing :D go listen for yourself unless you already knew that and i just wasted my time :upset:

Iron Maiden will continue to kick ***, as demonstrated by Dance of Death and BNW, and will never go the way of Metallica. If they do, I'll be very sad indeed.

Maiden's future looks more than bright, with the direction that "brave new world" and "dance of death" i am 110% assured that their albums to come will be just as memorable and wonderful additions to the Iron Maiden cataloge.

Bruces solo work, he has some good stuff. I like "a chemical wedding" best because i enjoy Adrian's guitar work on it, i found "Skunkworks" to be rather dull, and earlier works like "tatooted millionare" i also liked, but its VERY hard to listen to his voice not backed by the sound of Iron Maiden.
