I bought "visions of the beast" a month ago, (used for $12) why would anyone trade that in? I have all there cd's now, is there anymore dvds? probably live stuff right?

There's an old live DVD and there's Rock In Rio, which is amazingly good. I prefer the CD of RIR though, the crowd are louder.

And I was dumbstruck by Hallowed be Thy Name. Well thats enough of me, but could you guys tell me if dickinson ever left Maiden (Im a maiden n00b)

Josh
03-03-2005, 06:33 AM
dickinson left after the fear of the dark tour, i think that was 1993? and he came back a few years later, 1999 or something. they'd released 2 albums with blaze bailey doing vocals while bruce was away, but the first album after bruce came back (brave new world) IMO is one of their best. (it was also their first with 3 guitarists)

rippa32
03-03-2005, 06:35 AM
Okay thanks. How does it sound with a third guitarist? And what was the need for two lead guitarists in the first place?

Josh
03-03-2005, 06:42 AM
it was just how it worked out, dennis stratton left after the first album, and the brought in adrian smith, the way he and dave write songs tends to make some of them twin lead.
adrian left after seventh son of a seventh son, so they got in janick gers, but when bruce had left and was doing his solo work he got adrian to work on his solo stuff with him, and when he rejoined maiden he wanted adrian back as well, but by then janick had been in the band for 12 years and they didnt want to kick him out, so they just had a 3 guitar line-up

Floyd, the song women in uniform was released on a special live EP. Side 1 has women in uniform (studio version), and side 2 has drifter and phantom of the opera both live. I believe it was released right before the killers album because it still had dennis stratton playing on it.

The twin lead guitars was mainly to harmonise with each other, it's not really noticeable on Number of the Beast album (I can't think of a song that does use both leads). A good song that uses the twin lead guitar extremely well is; Infinite Dreams, the riff before and after the solo and with Steves bass all the way up to 11...*drools*

Also, question, Afraid to shoot strangers, that lick right as it gets heavy is that an example of the 2 lead guitarist harmonizing? sounds like it. Thats one of my favorite songs.

Mr. Kcender is nearly entirely correct. The EP was called "Live!! + One" (The one being Women in Uniform), and featured the studio version of Women in Uniform, and three live songs: Phantom of the Opera, Drifter and Sanctuary. It was released a few months before Killers.

Oh, ok. I thought you meant writing riffs. :)

Well, there is no one lead, or rhythm guitarist. In the coverslips, on stage, and in the music itself, the boys (Adrian, Dave and Janick) are always all described as Lead Guitar. You can hear in some of the BNW and DOD songs that the lead changes several times, as they switch from melody to solo.

the_uber_penguin

I thought Bruce and Steve wrote most of the lyrics...
Adrian is fairly prolific too...he wrote some of the best stuff (Passchendale and The Wicker Man are both music by Adrian Smith, Words by Bruce Dickenson)

Also, no there is no set lead guitarist and no set rhythm guitarists. They're all pretty similar in their rhythm playing, but you can tell apart their leads quite easily:

Jannick: Off the wall, crazy solos with lots of bends
Dave: Jazz influenced, very fast improvised solos
Adrian: Rhythmic, pre-written solos. He doesn't improvise much.

You probably know that Blaze Bayley does vocals for these albums which isn't saying anything bad, but there's no one like Bruce. If you wanted to complete your studio album collection, then I'd say yeah get 'em... but it basically comes down to your taste. Some people like the X Factor better than Virtual XI, some the other way around.. and then there are those who don't particularily care for either. X Factor has a dark theme to it... Sign of the Cross, Lord of the Flies, and my favorite on the album 2 a.m. stand out to me. Virtual XI can seem a little repetitive with songs like Don't look to the eyes of a stranger, but the clansman and the angel and the gambler (some may disagree) are standouts.. my favorite is When two worlds collide. I'd get Maiden's "classics" from the 80s and BNW & DoD 1st and then maybe look into getting them. Both Virtual XI and X Factor are better than NPFTD in my opinion. Buy them if you're looking for money to spend.

I thought Bruce and Steve wrote most of the lyrics...
Adrian is fairly prolific too...he wrote some of the best stuff (Passchendale and The Wicker Man are both music by Adrian Smith, Words by Bruce Dickenson)

Paschendale was Smith/Harris.

I'd definatley say that nowadays, it's 'Arry, H and Bruce who do most of the song writing, though Jannick does a lot too. They all have different writing styles, but they work amazing together - it was the Harris/Smith/Dickenson combo that wrote most of 7th son. Dave doesn't write too much - from memory, he wrote Charlotte the Harlot on the S/T, but didn't write anything on Killers or NOTB. I don't think that Jannick wrote many good songs before today's line up - he wrote part of both The Apparition AND Fear is the Key. However, he DID help to write Montsegur

dave/janick and adrian tend to just dance around at their sides...

And also, why don't people like "The thin line" that much? I think it's one of the best songs on that album along with Wickerman, Blood Brothers And Out Of The Silent Planet. I learnt to play the chorus to Out of the silent planet the other day which sound awesome.

Who wrote the drum music for some of their earlier songs such as wrathchild, Santuary and Iron Maiden? Was It Doug Sampson or Some of the guys before him. I thought Clive was there very first drummer till i saw the early days.

And also, why don't people like "The thin line" that much? I think it's one of the best songs on that album along with Wickerman, Blood Brothers And Out Of The Silent Planet. I learnt to play the chorus to Out of the silent planet the other day which sound awesome.

I love the thin line... 2nd best song on that album IMO. Nice and dramatic.

What is Early Days? And to the christian argument why did stevie get banned for expressing his opinion but the christian didn't?

The History Of Iron Maiden Part 1: The Early Days is a dvd that was released in December 2004. It's a two disc set, and features various bits and bobs from Maiden's past, from it's inception through to 1983's Piece Of Mind album. The main focus of the dvd is 'Early Days', a 90 minute documentary which is ultimately a re-done '12 Wasted Years', which in itself was a 1988 documentary about Maiden, and one which I feel to be superior to the Early Days documentary. Also included on the 2-disc set is live footage from 1981 (Live At The Rainbow), 1983 (Beast Over Hammersmith) and 1983 (the Dortmund gig from the World Piece tour). It also features a rare 1980 video recorded at the Ruskin Arms, a small pub where Maiden gigged frequently before it was famous. Other bonuses included an editon of 20th Century Box, an 80's TV program, about Iron Maiden and the growing Metal scene of the 80's, pictures, steve's diary, some music videos and more.

Get it, it's pretty good. But get 12 Wasted Years too, if you can track it down.

Everyone is allowed to voice their opinion as long as it isn't offensive to anyone...

Thin Line is such a great song, it has a cool intro a good rhythm and great guitar work from Davey near the end :thumb:

an opinion is always offensive to SOMEONE.. he was just unlucky and was offensive to a Christian Mod... nothing he said was that wrong...

I love the thin line....

No, he expressed his opinion in the most offensive way possible.

Very similar to me going 'I hate jews, they are all bad and idiots.'

I'd wish they would come down under. I thought it was funny when they tour Australia on the early days and had to play in an outback resturant.
