I use one (which I found on my school's bandroom floor) because I'm waiting to buy some really nice cymbals, at which time I will still only have one because I'm cheap :D
Your way cooler if you have 2 crashes, or Crashi.

I beg to differ.

Having two you have two different sounds to choose from. One may be more appropriate for a different part in a song, or a different style of music. You may want a dark crash sometimes and others a very bright crash. It's really just opening up your options. Even getting two of the same cymbals but 2 inches different in diameter is nice because you can use one to accent the other. Just my 2 cents.

Ringo used one crash throughout the Beatles' entire career. Since then he's upgraded to more, though, but he used one back then.
I only had one crash for a little over a year. As someone said, two crashes allow a different tonality, which is IMO quite important in music, especially if you are a melodic player.

i use 3, one would sound better for certain things your playin. for example, in heavier music imo 16" and 18" sound better but for softer things 14" sounds better. and like brokensticks said 14" can accent the 16" and stuff like that

That's what I do. 16" and 18" FTW. Though I wouldn't mind having more. They're both A Zildjian Med-Thins. At first I wanted to get a 17" to add to it, but now I'm thinking Ks all the way. But yeah, more options are always nice. Nothing wrong with having one crash though.

I don't like the 14" much.....even in softer music (I have one, want to get rid of it).

I've got one, nameless crash/ride...because that's what came with my set and I don't think I've really gotten to the level where I need to upgrade just yet [but I can't wait til I do~].
Not to mention I don't have a job.

That, and it is much easier to do quick accents with the cymbals.

I do this too. I have 16" and 18" AAX Stage crashes. Go great together. This is the one thread where i have been a bit helpful. Cheers!:chug:

I use 2 crashes, 17" and 19" AA Mediums. Most songs I play I feel like one crash sound just isn't enough and 2 works out perfect. On a few songs when I feel I need more than 2 I just crash my Stage Ride.

Buy them one at a time. You definatly don't need 1000$

i hear ya NC im 15 (getting ready to turn 16) and its very hard to earn money for your kit. somehow ive managed to put about 2300 into my kit lol but it took a very long time. it sucks not having a liscence lol

I use 1 crash because I don't have enough money for another one. oh wait, technically I have 2 crashes since I crash my ride. Soon enough though, I'll have enough money to buy a 19" vault crash =D

I only have one crash, 18" A Custom. I'm starting to find it a bit restricting, and I tend to overuse my china, so I'm thinking about buying another, possibly a 16" AAXplosion.

I'm gonna check out a couple 2002's as well. I've been more and more impressed by Paiste lately (since I got my Sig Sound Edges).

08-13-2006, 02:12 AM
well I just got an 18" 2002 Crash. Good cymbal. Brighter then I thought it would be, seeing as its roughly the same size/weight as my 18" AA Medium Crash, which is pretty dark. It could be because of age/use though, the 2002 was mailed straight from the distributor.
If anyone can help me out over at the Cymbal Finder thread, please do so :D

I have two crashes at the moment. One of which isn't mounted, because I don't have a stand yet.
18" HH and 16" AAX Stage (which is lying on a table). I'm planning on getting an 18" AAX Stage crash to go along with the other 'ne. I'm saving, damnit.

I use 5....
Alot of jazz drummers use one crash. I guess it just depends on what you need
TormentorScott
08-13-2006, 09:25 AM
I used to use 3, then two
and on my new setup I'm gonna go with just one, and a crashable ride.
I just want to, I don't know why. I guess using 1 crash and crashing on your ride is like using two crashes and a ride you never crash on, which I used to do, so not much of a change really.

i use one because its all i can afford.
drummer with 1 crash: meg white of white stripes, guy from maroon 5, guy from jet, tons of other pop groups etc.
I believe Jonah David from Matisyahu uses 1 crash, who is a very good drummer.
There are a decent ammout of pros out there with 1 crash.
some advantages to having one crash is keeping a simple kit that is easier to carry on the road, especially when a lot of times you can get by with 1 crash, especially if you have a crashable ride. Some people just prefer smaller kits.
and obviously the advantage to having more crashes is a broader range of sounds that you are able to use. It doesn't really matter how many crashes you have tho, just because you only have 1 crash doesnt mean your a bad drummer or anything, and by no means does having a lot of crashes make you any better.

I use 2 because I like having a 16 and an 18, and I can afford it, they're only wuhans.
No doubt whenever I sell up and get my new kit i'll be living with one crash for a while though. (Paiste 2002's cost more)

I only use two. I have a 16" Sabian HHX Studio crash and a 16" HHX Stage crash. They sound amazing together. I guess now I'd just like a larger crash, and some effects cymbals.

i've got 2: 17" and 18".
I know a player who has 4 17" crashes. all different models and makes, but he says he likes the 17"s all because they have the same time of decay yet alls ound different. too similar for me though.

ive got a 16" and 18" paiste prototype...the 18" sucks balls.
i got an 18" UFIP which sounds a lot like the 18" proto.
i got a 16" amir with an enormous crack.
and i got an 18" vintage avedis crash.
of all those, i only use the 16" proto and the vintage avedis.
!aaa!

I've got my Sabian Pro 16" crash (quite good) and a, um, crash/ride that came with my first ever kit (a pulse kit). The latter is, for such a bog standard cymbal, actually quite good and almost oriental. No matter what the cymbal it's good to have more stuff to hit.

I use 4 crashes for two different reasons. A) different sounds. B) accessibility. Try playing a roll around the kit at 230 bpm and then going back to the crash on the left side. Not going to happen.
Ethan.
08-13-2006, 02:57 PM
Yeah thats one reason I would like more crashes. And if you want to hit three or four crashes in a row kind of fast (like the drum fill/solo part in Tom Sawyer) 3 or 4 crashes would sound better than 3 hits on one cymbal. The attack kind of washes out.
Superman
08-13-2006, 02:59 PM
I have 14" and 16" crashes with a 10" Splash for variation, I am looking at some Chinas at the moment. After that I will proabably look at some more Crashes as the accessability isnt good with just the two.

I play a lot of funk and some jazz, and 1 cymbal is easily enough for jazz. Having only the one cymbal (15" AAX Dark crash, which is excellent) has made me get more creative with using the drums and fx cymbals, and not relying on crashes so much.

I use 4 now and it consist of
18" Istanbul Alchemy Power Crash
17" Istanbul Agop Med-Thin Crash
18" Wuhan Crash
16" Wuhan Med-thin crash.
I just like the different sounds I can get. I am hoping to replace the 2 wuhans with more Istanbuls in the future though. Because sometime after I am crashing the stannies I dont even want to hit the wuhans anymore.

I used to use two crashes, but mainly just stick to one now for the sake of simplicity. I rarely bring my whole kit anywhere unless I need everything. Plus, the less time you spend setting up cymbals, the more time you can spend tuning!
