View Full Version : Would you rather be in a Band that is . .

Horrorshow34

I couldn't really think of anywhere else to post this, so I thought I'd stick it here. All info is up there for you. Would you rather be in a short-lived, hugely popular band who are around for a year or so and make a lot of money and sell millions of records. Or would you rather be in a 'cult' band that has a small army of devoted fans, a number of hit underground records and are around for years? :)

I can't see anyone picking the first option in this forum unless they were to do it ironically, in which case I wouldn't put it past them.

Horrorshow34
08-12-2006, 12:29 PM
I just wanted to see if people would choose the 'cult' band option and stay to the Alt/Indie spirit or if they'd just to like be another ''next big thing'' type band

Big band for me. Because then I could play a stadium show which would be awesome.

Your dad probably owns a stadium.

Um second one even though I'm already pretty damn big in Japan.

Horrorshow34
08-12-2006, 12:45 PM
Right . . . any reason why?

Sepstrup
08-12-2006, 12:54 PM
Reasons? Try writing a review of Tool in which you rate the album less than 3...

Horrorshow34
08-12-2006, 12:56 PM
:( am sorry I ever doubted you sir

[EDIT] Tool aren't really that cult anymore. They headlined Download (biggest Metal festival in England) this year, they've sold millions and everytime they release a record, all their fans (434364736434746 people to be approx) treat it like it's the resurrection of Christ or something

They still suck of course

nutty_bar
08-12-2006, 01:40 PM
Very hard question. Probably number 2 because if you last long you are probably really good friends with your band, and have a community feel with your fans.

But... If you were popular for a year, think of all the money. I think it depends on the music. If I had to lessen the music quality for popularity, no way.

Final decision... #2

Matt?

millions of records so i can be on vh1 celebreality

randomthought9
08-12-2006, 03:03 PM
Well by successful do you mean commercial or artistic? Like I'd rather be in a band that had a huge impact on music, but fell apart for some reason than a band that was good consistently, but never great. I know it's the Alt/Indie forum, but I wouldn't mind being in a big band though.

Robert Crumb
08-12-2006, 03:10 PM
This presupposes the idea that a popular, one-hit wonder type band can't make worthwhile, lasting music. I'd be happy to be in band that made a sound I really felt and that had a huge radio hit but subsequently fell apart rather than sticking it out in a crummy band with a bunch of cult fan suckers. Of course, the opposite works just as well. Cult band doing something you love, rather than a shitty pop band making crap. And generally that's more common. So whatev.

Zappa
08-12-2006, 03:48 PM
For me, the best possible thing would be to make an OK Computer. A record that does not compromise my vision at all, but is hugely successful and inspires an entire generation of musicians.

Nah, but some of their fans are quite 'cultish'... It's the best example of annoying fanboys I could think of...

I picked cult band.

I figured he was asking "if i would rather be in a band that just 'okay' and that got famous then broke up, or if i would be in a band I loved for a few years that was popular in the underground but never got mainstrem success.

08-12-2006, 05:22 PM
I would want to be playing music for as long as i can, in that case i would want to be in a underground band with a cult following. As long as i can tour the country and play out, I could care less about getting big.

I don't see how playing a stadium could be more fun than a small venue, with some of your closest friends right up front.

I would love to be in a band and get recognition, but not crazy amounts of fame.

Then again what do I care, I'm a bassist.

Number one as long as I had a good contract to monetarily sustain myself for a good while after I left the business. Then I'd probably entertain multiple pet projects, create various large scale art works, and investing my money. Oh - and I'd also be ****ing the groupies as a bonus.

Hmmm.

Nah, I've always thought Tool were terrible. I just find them really pretentious and dull. Plus they just sound like a more mature, Prog influenced Nu-Metal band.

God, am talking about Tool in an Alt/Indie forum. Feel so dirty and ill

PECOAE

Being naive doesn't necessary mean pretentious and dull.

That mentality of Pearl Jam's was also Dire Straits', and they rocked.

Just as being hugely technical and trying to maintain a cult base based on an early alternative sound which sound changed to Stupid Dream-Prog alterna-metal is pretentious and dull.

Right, this is a music forum. Not everybody has the same tastes. Example, a few MX members are big NSync fans, but there's a load of people on this site who can't stand them. You have to be open to other people's opinons and views. You can't just go around slatting everyone who isn't a Tool fan.

If you wanna be the latter, it won't be very last long until you're kicked out of here, trust me mate :) have a good day

I'd make a delicious pop record with my band and get lots of money, then for the much-awaited follow up we'd go all Butthole Surfers and freak out our huge fanbase. What fun.

At least I'm safe in the knowledge that if I ever need lots of money, I can go to England and write songs about getting thrown out of pubs.
