Okay, i'm going to be buying some new hi hats within the next however many weeks i have left of the summer holiday (4 i think).
I was just wondering whats the difference between 13 and 14" hats. Do 13" have less sustain and more "chick" sound, or what?
and could someone explain what a "dark" sounding cymbal sounds like kinda maybe?
Help anyone.

I have a pair of 13" AA reg hats. Really nice, lovely 'chick' and nice and crisp. Not too washy when open. You can use them for a range of music, I prefer 13".
'Dark' cymbals are widely used in jazz, they're much more mellow but it depends on how you play them. Think of it how it sounds. Same for 'shimmering' and 'bright'.

I don't like 14" hats anymore. Far too big. My main ones are 13", and i'm gonna be making myself an 8" pair.

I cant really tell you about the difference between the 14" and 13" as my first set of hats were Paiste 302's and they are no comparison to a 13" top end hats..
yeah I seem to start liking 13's more and more now after switching. I use 13" K/Z hats and they give a very dry and dark sound. takes a while to get used to but once you do, you wouldnt wanna have it any other way.
Im buying a A custom mastersound bottom soon so i'll see how those sound together :)

Yuh, i still have my 302's, and those are my list to replace next. I was thiking of getting some istanbul 13" regular hats, but the shop only had 14" for show, so i wanted to see if there was any difference. By the way you guys have explained, it seems i would like 13", but there is no real substitute to actually listening to them.

13's would be higher pitched.
14 inch Zildjian CIE cymbals are dark and mellow, and probably best for jazz and funk, but yeah. Proabbly the K/Zs would be the most diverse.

My main hats are 13", and i'd never switch back to 14. to me, 14" sounds too muddy and deep. I want my hats bright and clear.
