So, the time is almost upon us to choose a new batch of bands to feature. The first week was very successful, and resulted in some much-deserved attention for bands like Silversun Pickups, as well as for more established bands like the Casualties and DragonForce. Let's keep it going this week.

Mx is busy devising a feature whereby listening parties will be somehow user-chosen, but for now it's up to us mods to do so. Basically, you can use this thread to give us suggestions for every main genre, prefferably with descriptions and the like, but there's no guarantees beyond that. In order to be featured, the band must meet the following criteria:

1) Have a picture
2) Have at least 2 working [full] mp3s [on sputnik]
3) Are underground or lesser known bands (for exposure reasons, and the fact that they often put free mp3s over the internet).

Once again, there's no guarantee we'll feature the band you choose, but it'll help us out some. And please don't suggest anything that doesn't meet the standards.

Current listening parties:
Metal: DragonForce- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=6
Punk: The Casualties- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=4
Alt/Indie: Silversun Pickups- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=3
Rock: My Morning Jacket- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=5
Hip-Hop: Hilltop Hoods- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=8
Pop: Marvelous 3- http://www.sputnikmusic.com/party.php?party=7
Other: Nothing yet! XD

If you guys are suggesting bands, please make sure they have at least 2 tracks already uploaded to sputnik. If they don't, please go to their site and get links to free tracks (if they have them), and then upload them. Myspace links don't work. Otherwise we won't be able to feature these bands, for obvious reasons.

The Jungler
08-10-2006, 09:28 PM
How about Andrew Bird? He's underground, good (if that's a specification) and has music on Sputnik.

Shadows
08-10-2006, 09:30 PM
It has to be a link directly to an mp3 file, not a link to a YSI upload containing an mp3.

DFelon204409

Other/Electronica: Venetian Snares
Hip Hop: Deltron3030 (or Del Tha Funkee Homosapien)
Rock: Thin Lizzie
Metal: fordirelifesake
Punk: Circle Takes the Square
Alt/Indie: Murder by Death

hey Spat, if any of these are picked PM me and I'll upload.

How bout Dispatch? Their a jam rock band and their pretty good and i know they have tracks on their website so i would put them on sputnik if anyone is interested. I know jeremy likes them.

wtf omg noob

Machinae Supremacy fits the bill absolutely perfectly. And if the Gorillaz can get away with animated profile pictures, why not Machinae?

Shadows
08-11-2006, 12:11 AM
Our Machinae Supremacy page here has plenty of mp3s as well as being a pretty obscure band. Sounds like a winner for the metal section.

I was going to say Giant Drag, a band I just added and all that, but their song links don't seem to be working on the Spud player.

Drunken Viking
08-11-2006, 02:18 AM
For metal, I'd say Vornagar. Really underground, and they have a few Mp3s up. I just added a picture and the band bio.

EDIT: Or atleast I'm trying to if my internet will stop sucking.

Te Karanga

For Electronic (other) I'd say Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream or M83 for starters.

I'll try hunt down some links.

For rock, Dead Meadow. They are very overlooked, and very good.

I'd love to see Tangerine Dream and Murder by Death. Haven't heard either. but they interest me.

What's the easiest way to find free mp3's?

Are The Decemberists too well-known? I'd like to suggest Silver Jews too if I could find some songs.

Iluvatar
08-12-2006, 04:17 PM
The easiest way is to check the bands homepage, or their labels. Otherwise, it's rather difficult to find sanctioned songs. If you know how to google search archives and such, then you can use a link from there, but often those are dead/will be dead. I also don't know if mx wants...ahem, technically illegal songs being streamed here.

I_am_the_balls
08-12-2006, 06:26 PM
I guess The Offspring for punk. They have everyone of their songs on their site to choose from.

That's the only way.

08-12-2006, 10:42 PM
So Jazz and Blues would fall into the "Other" category?

Dave de Sylvia
08-12-2006, 10:53 PM
I;m going to feature Machinae Supremacy, but I just checked and 4 of the 6 mp3 links were dead. If someone wants to put up some more (but not too many) that best represent the band, I'll feature it right away.

edit: blues is under rock (though I'd like it to be changed) and jazz is in other. Whatever they're under on the site, they're under for listening parties.

For rock, Dead Meadow. They are very overlooked, and very good.I'd like to hear this band as well.

For Other Music, or Electronica I guess, I'd love to see Underworld. They're a hugely influential band, and yet they get no love on Sputnik. :upset:

I'll think of some more later.

Yeah, I never really understood why blues was under rock...

Drunken Viking
08-14-2006, 10:28 PM
Yeah, it should definitely be the other way around.

For next week, in the Metal section for the listening party, I vote Vornagar. They are pretty underground, and have 3 Mp3s up.

Esmerine for post-rock, or Alt-Indie if you must.

Eh... there's no MP3s. Never mind.

Iluvatar

For punk, A Wilhelm Scream.

For metal, Sonata Arctica.

And give me ten minutes, and then I'll reccomend The Flower Kings for rock.

Nominate The Aquabats for Punk (Grind,) has a song I just added on their band page or here: http://aquabats.superbad.net/media/audio/The_Aquabats/Fashion_Zombies.mp3
I wouldn't call them utterly underground, but not alot of people have heard them (at least as a grind band, not a ska band.)

One suggestion (as opposed to a request) I have is The Red Paintings. G_Mac has like six or seven songs uploaded to their profile (their Tears for Fears cover of 'Mad World,' 'Walls,' 'Pickles,' 'The Streets Fell Into My Window' [which features a reading from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland], etc.), and most of their discography has been reviewed by him on Sputnikmusic (or will be), and that's a very good band that needs exposure, especially since they're touring in North America for the first time ever. They don't really have any LPs, just EPs, so again, the exposure would do them some good, since the music is very, very good.

For the punk/whatever subgenre party, you could do Belle Époque. They have their whole album on their website in .mp3 format.

Add the best ones to the artist page (I've never heard them so I don't know) and they'll be featured in the next couple of weeks.

Jom, that was a request and you know it, so request denied on the grounds of improper labelling.

A good punk listening party would be The Loved Ones, they're fairly underground still, (at least not that well known anyway) and one of the best pop punk acts at the minute.

I've posted three mp3s on their profile, but it seems to be shared with a now-defunct blues rock from the 60s, so the picture and band description i added havn't appeared, and there seems to be no way to make a seperate profile for the two bands...

Dave de Sylvia
09-23-2006, 02:40 PM
Yeah, I reversed the changes because it's ridiculous having two bands under one profile. I changed the blues band's profile, so you can make a new one for your band.

Done, under Rock. I removed one of the mp3s because it's the weakest there; this way I think anyone can click any song and get a good idea of what he's about.

Fugazi

I added 2 studio tracks and 4 live ones that I found of good quality, their bio is extremely fleshed out, and they have tons of albums with reviews to look at, even if some of the reviews are lacking a bit. You can only use mp3s that are hosted by the band or their label due to legal constrictions and our strict anti-getting sued policy, but I'm sure there's no problem seeing as most punk bands give away music.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, it's specific to each forum but we can only feature one per week from the main genre. Punk only gets one listening party per week, whether it's hardcore or pop-punk.

Wesley Willis for rock

At first listen it may seem he is a joke artist that doesn't know how to write songs or play his instruments, but his story is couragous. He was an overweight black man armed with a synthisizer who was diagnosed with schizophrenia that used to be signed to American Recordings then to Alternative Tentacles. In the mid '90s, Wesley had an MTV profile on him and was featured on the Howard Stern show on a few occasions. His simplistic over the top lyrics on the most simplest of subjects, Wesley became a cult icon upon early file sharing networks. He passed away in '03 of chronic luekemia.

Be still my beating heart, you can't find a neo-classical avant-garde folk black viking jazz band?

I'll put it up next week. Hopefully I won't have to do all the work again.

If in doubt, just put Silver Jews up there a few times more.

If you could make sure the bands you suggest have a good photo, preferrably wider than it is tall, and that the mp3s work properly, it'd save me a lot of time. Thanks.

Shaimus for rock for whenever, if you are still taking suggestions for rock even though they're not Irish :-*

I just added a quick description, but hopefully the photograph looks alright. If not, they have loads at their mySpace.

hope that does the trick. :)

edit: I've also added them to the review site with a short bio. I'm not sure whether you write all those short bio's for the listening parties yourself, but if you need any help with it let me know.

Why did a bunch of streams in the older listening parties suddenly disappear? Is it because the main source changed and the streams on the site were removed automatically?
