prove me wrong. please.
i need a reason to listen to them but 10 minutes intros of "vrrrrrr......dunnn.....................shhh....... ..............hummmmm hummmmm" repeating the same melody with a guy talking before any form of building up just seems to me like rubbish.
am i hearing the wrong songs?

see that's what i don't get though.
EITS have huge climaxes (you can't deny that Yasmin The Light, A Poor Man's Memory, and The Only Moment We are Alone have HUGE climaxes), constant music, always a melody.
i turn on a GY!BE song, and i hear a guy talk. then i hear humming for 5 minutes. then a guitar plays two notes...... then two more..... then humming.... then 4 notes..... then i turn off the song because within 6 minutes (the song should have a melody by now) that was all that happened.
i can see how someone might not like EITS, but i can't see how you can see them as boring, but not godspeed.

Mogwai is the only post-rock band that isn't completely boring rubbish.
Mogwai's problem is that their overall sound is somehow just too bland. I can't really explain it any better than that, it's just all the same and unvaried and boring. Godspeed is alright cause I don't have much of it, only a few songs. EITS are wicked, they're stuff that I have is great. Sigur Ros are my favourite definitely, and A Silver Mt. Zion are also very good. Mono are pretty good too. Do Make Say Think are good, but they don't build up to the massive cruscendo's like other post-rock bands, and it often sounds like they should cause it's just going nowhere. Good for spacing out to though.

i find GYBE boring too. in parts, they are excellent, and they have some good ideas. thats probably why i bought most of their albums :D. however, i find them too repetitive and relying too much on the same old formula throughout their songs. it always starts off quiet, then you know thats its always going to progressively get louder, then quieter again. sometimes they repeat this within the same song. its almost like every song is essentially the same but a different 'skin'.
for the same genre, i think bands like mogwai do a better job of it (although they are far from perfect)........for the simple reason that they vary their style and don't rely on the same old tired formula.
i don't think any post-rock bands have got it just right, and they all have their flaws.

I have to be in a certain mood to listen to Godspeed. Otherwise, they get on my nerves.
Me too, but for the record, I really like most of their albums. I think their genius is in their narrative content, not so much the music but the point of the music. The spoken samples, track titles, album covers, and CD inserts lay it out, and the music just provides the atmosphere in a way that, given the whole package, is very appropriate and (usually) powerful. I think their works are very successful, they're just not a great rock band.

If you think Godspeed is the dullest post-rock band you probably listen to nowhere near enough post-rock to even be discussing it. Most people think just about all post-rock is boring, the forerunners like Godspeed and Explosions and Tortoise are considered the more exciting of the genre.
Also, Mogwai is probably one of my least favorite post-rock bands and it's pretty unfathomable that people are rating them above GY!BE.

I'd say that position is firmly held by Explosions in the Sky. At least we can all easily distinguish between the big name post-rockers, GY!BE, Mogwai, Tortoise - but Explosions simply take a few things (some more than others) from each of them resulting in a somewhat mediocre combination.

NOTHING can touch the build up and climax of the first track on Lift Your Skinny Fists. Godspeed just has so many more dimensions than EITS...I wouldn't even put them in the same league. To listen to GY!BE, do not expect instant gradification. Instead, close your eyes and immerse yourself in the picture they paint. I have come to truely appreciate the entire dynamic of their music...the quiet parts compliment the loud, and vice versa.

I find these guys are really good when they're actually playing music but 8 minutes of non-music in one song? It's absurd!
