I don't know if this is the place to put this, but the music involved is somewhat indie. This article is on the local "Scene" as this guy put it. If you guys have any articles on your "Scene" please post it here as well.

I don't take articles like this to heart because most of the time the people don't know what they're talking about, and the group being observed isn't a proper representation of whatever it is they're writing about.

When are people going to learn that if you write about a subculture that you're not part of, you're going to look like a complete moron?
Write about the hardcore kids. You've got the jeans to do it.

That article was hilarious. Regardless of the quality of journalism, all the quoted material was just as good. We live in a truly absurd world, it's too bad that music is occasionally the root of it.

Haha. I think all the "Straightedge kids" do. I know for a fact I drink and smoke, but then again I'm wayy underage too. But I don't claim straightedge either. Or scene for that matter. I go solely for the music and the awesome environment.
The thing about this article is that it made the front page of the city's newspaper. It's been causing so much controversy. There's a show tomorrow and I'm almost posotive this will be the topic of the night.
It's not the article that bothered me really. It's more the right hand column. I go to shows religiously but I don't wear girlpants or fit most of the stereotype.

That whole article is based on generalizations and stereotypes. It doesn't really belong in a newspaper.
I like how everyone exaggerates when they talk about scene kids and MySpace, as if people sit there all day and click refresh. The person that wrote the article even does that, sometimes literally and sometimes just by hinting.

The thing I hate the most about the scene is their reference to each other as "kids" and "kiddies". I just never understood. =(

Same.
The thing I hate the most about the scene is their reference to each other as "kids" and "kiddies". I just never understood. =( More than likely becuase they somehow think they're above all the other scene people. Or maybe they're trying to be ironic.
Mekkalayakay
08-03-2006, 06:53 PM
Well I'm pretty sure they use it because they feel more unity using it, compared to "scene people" or "scene guys". Like how you call a straight up metal fan a metalhead. You can't just call him a metal guy or a metal fan. You have to have that unity with other fellow "metalheads".
I just don't know why scene kids chose "scene kids".
masada
08-03-2006, 07:11 PM
"Kiddies" is a bit condescending though. You'd think they could figure out something a little more sincere to call people.
I'm also going to state how retarded that article was again.
I'm playing a house show next Friday. Am I scene?

House shows are fun as hell. But then again I'm one of those people that get annoyed when people start drinking. Yes!
Basically ever show in this town is either a house show or a benefit show.

I don't know about you guys but the scene that the author described is pretty much right on where I live. Plus he was interviewing people involved in the scene there, geez don't be in denial if you're scene people here guys.

Yes because I'm sure scene kids everywhere younger than 19 are going to love hearing that they are more in it for the socializing, the clothing, and the gossip and definately not for the music.
Read Nacho's post.

Really, based on my observations of the local "scene," the majority of those people actually aren't much into the music.

It's funny, because I've actually heard of the band Showbread before.

It's funny, because I've actually heard of the band Showbread before.
Most of these bands that play at Chi Alpha and the Wesley are local-ish. They're either on small indie labels or unsigned. Some of these bands are:
Meriwether
Tyler Read
Brosius (Pronounced - Bro shus)
Oh! Juliet
Maylene
Lorene Drive
The Flood Memoirs
The Fight Between Frames
The list just goes on and on.

In general probably Alt/Indie but is stained by the stigma of scene emo/hardcore.

08-03-2006, 09:28 PM
No 'scene' kid even listens to hardcore, they only like all this wannab grindcore and death metal, then, just to try to make it look like they have a soft side, they decide to listen to bright eyes.
Some scenes arent that bad, and the people dont have to dress like idiots and they actually like hardcore.

I think scenes are retarded.
I think people that dress to reflect the music they listen to are retarded.
My "scene" sucks by the way. It's just everyone and their mother now throwing in a keyboard that you can't hear becuase panic at the disco has an organ.
And if you go outside of the pop rock/post hardore scene, you just get into the hardcore shows which are basically comprised of one recycled, talentless band with boring riffs and vocals after another. Everyone just wants to jump around and hit eachother and there are only two bands that are doing anything remotely unique.
Ze Ultra Boys
and
Ludo and a Thousand Miles of Ocean
Everyone else is just meh. I really wish ill will upon them as musicians for their inability to do anything worth-while.

Pavement, Slint, and Sonic Youth seem the have the most weight on what I hear from local bands.

There are a lot of interesting scenes going around in my neck of the woods. There's some of the kind of stuff this article describes, mostly out in the suburban areas. But I think that's true for most cities, depending on size. Nothing really groundbreaking here, admittedly, but it's not bad. We've even got a small coterie of free jazz dorks.

My two babies that I would really like to see go places are Tyler Read and Meriwether.
Tyler Read is going to have an internationally released album out soon. They're way more marketable than Meriwether. I want Meriwether to get bigger so bad.
