So I have a question.

Im working on my theory, and learning the 12 major keys and 84 chords within the 12 keys. My question is, if Im playing, say C - I know I can play it up and down, but what does it mean to play it in Intervals? A friend was talking about this but I didnt quite understand it. Can anyone explain? Thanks

I think your friends might be talking about playing the scale with leaps of different intervals. One of the most common ones is playing thirds. So you go up a third and down a second. So your C scale would look like this:

C E D F E G F A G B A C B D C.

You can also do fifths:

C G D A E B F C G D A E B F C

It just helps you learn intervals.

Just a side note, this is referred to as "broken thirds", if you ever hear that term.

I guess you could do broken fifths too but that would be really hard to do on a bass, especially a 4 string.

Playing a scale in intervals could also mean playing it like this:

1 2 1 3 1 4 1 5 1 6 1 7 1 8

In tab it looks like this:

G|---------------0---2---4---5-|
D|---0---2---3-----------------|
A|-3---3---3---3---3---3---3---|
E|-----------------------------|

i think what your friend is referring to is playing like this, going up(then down) the neck in major 3rd's:

-------------------------------------------------------------
-----2------4-----6-----7------9------11------13-----14--
--3-----5-----7-----8------10----12------14------15------
--------------------------------------------------------------

then reverse the steps going back down the neck. the purpose is to get to know the sound of the intervals(major 3rd's, in the above example) all over the fretboard. note that the root note, in this case, is on the A string. each pair (eg playing 3 then 2, 5 then 4, 7 then 6, 8 then 7, etc) is an interval. remember, do the above slowly because its a listening exercise. listen and try to internalise the sound of the interval. knowing intervals is important.

ok, strictly speaking, you should really start on minor 2nd's (i did the diagram for 3rd's to show as an example). after you've done minor 2nd's, do the same with the following: major 2nd's, minor 3rd's, major 3rd's, perfect 4th's, augmented 4ths', perfect 5ths, minor 6ths', major 6ths, minor 7th's, major 7th's, octave.
