Jazz in bridge with an overdrive on the jazz, a jazz neck, a dark star right under the neck, and a better paint job.

I would put in a preamp, get new pickups (nordstrand, basslines and Dimarzio are all highly regaurded). A black pearl pickgaurd. Maybe a bridge pickup.

I say a different pickguard, black on black looks like ****
if you want new pickups, get new pickups
i say get a new pickguard, new bridge, and new paintjob
Double Jazz or Musicman style pickup up at the bridge (will have to router out for it) with a 3 way switch to change between single, parallel and series.
White perloid pickguard and maybe a new pre-amp.

Anodized Aluminum pickguard.
Basslines Quarter Pounder P-bass pickup.
EMG BTC EQ. This is a Bass and Treble EQ with cincentric pots. It would fit in the one hole for the tone control.
I wouldn't put a Jazz pickup in the bridge position because if you ever decide to get rid of the bass, it's value will be significantly decreased. If you do decide you'll never get rid of it, then a Basslines Quarter Pound Jazz pickup in the bridge.
If you do put the Jazz pickup in it, make the controls Volume/Volume/BTC EQ.

i'd do nothing, considering i'd kill to have an american p. but maybe different pups and like someone else said a concentric tone pot.

ok well i like some of the ideas, this is what i'm thinking:
1) Badass III bridge (because its pre-slotted so i dont have to worry about that, and its string through)
2) New Red Pearloid Pickguard
3) Basslines Quarter Pounder P-bass pickup
...the other stuff seems kinda extreme, like the jazz pickup and stuff, although that would be mighty fine. So what do you guys think?

If you have woodworking experience, I would try installing like, a jazz in the neck position and HH at the bridge. That would be sweet. Overkill, but sweet.

Hipshot Style B (I think that's the Fender replacement?)
Dimarzio Split P
Black Pearloid Pickguard
Hipshot Ultralite tuners
I'd go with a red pearloid on black, possibly a grey. Just anything but black or white, really.

I'd play it stock for a couple of weeks. Find out what I really don't like about it, then upgrade it from there.

Definitely swap out the pick-ups for quarter pounders or something equally good.
I would say dont change the pickguard, but thats only because i love the way black p's look with b/w/b pickguards.

Well if it was mine...
Tbqh I would sell it and use the money to buy wood/hardware for another custom. :D
But I'm assuming you want advice on what to do with it...
I'd go with what most everybody else said. Different pickguard, new pickups (if you're not fond of the tone of it), maybe some wiring tricks if you're into that sort of thing, like a killswitch.
And straploks. Schaller straploks.

Man i thought that was Atomicant's bass for a second. Keep the black pickguard, maple neck and black pickguard with black body is the secks. Just replace the pickup and add the preamp. Get a BadAss if youve got some money left over.
