View Full Version : Bass Forum Fads

I couldn't find an old thread like this, so I made a new one. Let's discuss various fads that have come over the forum. For instance, there was a period where everyone was convinced they were going to save up and get a Ritter. Now they are hardly ever mentioned. Similer fads ha ve occured with ERBs and fretlesses.

So how about discussing fads you remember.

Extended range basses seem to be a pretty constant fad.

EDIT: I see you mentioned that already.

Well sometimes it is moreso than others. Sixers are big now, but for a while people really liked 7+.

I remember the "if you can't slap, you can't play bass" fad.

I remember the "if you can't tap, you can't play bass" fad.

I remember the Schecter fad.

I remember the Sade fan boy fad.

I remember the Warwick fad.

I remember the "the mods all suck" fad.

I remember lots of fads.

I remember the "the mods all suck" fad.

um, that's still quite prominent LOMYALE.

seriously though, in regard to what you stated about slapping and tapping...like you said, once, those techniques were praised. now it seems like if you do either, you're a show-off wanker with no musical direction.

an exaggeration of my observations, of course, but i still see that mentality exhibited frequently.

The Fretless Fad was a good one. It should have stayed. There aren't enough fretless players in this world...

I picked one up about a year and a half ago, and now I barely touch my other basses.

Yeah, it is, but not in here. I must admit, I found it very funny/ironic that within my first 3 months of being a mod I had people calling for my blood and asking for me to resign and stop posting on the forum...now, in the awards thread, I'm winning the "favorite mod" section and I'm a lot of people's fav. overall MXer.

I agree with that. Now it seems that fingerstyle grooving is the fad because it's simple and not overly technical (or at least doesn't appear to be at first glance when, in reality, it is).

Why did you hate Miles? I LOVED Miles. He owned so hard.

The Sade fad I didn't hate, although I thought it was incredibly stupid. I almost left the forums on the Sade for Mod, though.

Miles... It was only Zender and me that found him annoying, worthless, and I hated the fact that everyone loved his spamming. Same with Pukeboy. Good grief...

Oh god... The Steve Harris craze, THAT was horrible.

The MIJ Fenders > MIA Fenders craze...

Precisions are crap fad... I hated that.

For the fad that was here when I joined, "Fenders are the suxxors, but I lurv and luff* my Ibanez, Alembic quality for $100! Go GSR100".

*Whoever gets the Lurv and Luff reference gets 5 Radio points, the evil twins if Gav points, starting now.

Remeber the week-long signature thread I started? There wasn't many of us, but I once started putting a signature, with a different quote each day at the bottom of every post, and I think a few MXers had followed, but I don't recall.

i didn't like Sade much when i first came across him, but that was short-lived. he's one of the most intellectual, talented, and utterly creative users to have ever been a member here. this forum just couldn't handle his views, perspectives, or humor.

on a side note, the "i love Sade" fad can only be attributed to the fact that most people, while fearing his "wrath," figured if they'd suck his dick, he'd like them. which of course wasn't the case. regardless of how nice you act to him, it doesn't mean he's not gonna call you out when you're being dipshit.

Short, but I remember it.

And pogs. Remember those?
Hey, I still play pogs every day!

The Fretless Fad was a good one. It should have stayed. There aren't enough fretless players in this world...

I picked one up about a year and a half ago, and now I barely touch my other basses.
I've always kept a fretted bass around, "just in case...". Whenever I try playing it, I realize I can't. Fraking speed bumps:p

I still lol when there were threads made asking me to step down as mod and leave the forum because I was a "horrible mod." I didn't change my technique at all when, suddenly, about a year later, I'm an awesome mod.

The public is so fickle.

By the way, don't think I forget who didn't want me as mod in the first place. I still remember all of 'em...

-Gav

Iremember I went AWOL for about a couple of months, that was the time when you became a mod. Then I came back on and there was the whole "Gav is gay", "Giv should step down" etc etc and I was seriously confused as to why everyone was like this. I can't even remember one person who had problems with you. but since I tend to forgive and forget on internet forums I don't think it matter anyway.

^^^ Yeah, it seems more gear based now

In the UK, we called slammers "metallys" the rather big metal ones which really hurt when you throw at people? ;) Yeah, pogs got banned kind of because of me unfortunately at my primary school! Someone nicked my whole collection from my bag, I told the Head and instead of investigating and getting them back for me she just banned it! Same happened with Pokemon cards. This younger kid got his stolen so it just got banned.

I remember in my playground people used to kind of rent themselves out to go and win pogs for them! (the people that had none) like at the start of the day someone would give them 5, then if by the end of the day they had 15, they'd be allowed to keep 5 of them :p haha)

ANYWAY..

yeah just keep wishing you were me. just snort a line of coke off the ground i walk on, it's the closest you'll get.

remember when everyone started volunteering at daycares so they could ejaculate on the faces of young black kids?

i <3 my baby boi.
i'm just really good at starting fads, i guess.
