View Full Version : List Behavior
The lists are going downhill, for a few reasons:
1) People are smashing lists, such as "GET INTO REALLL MUSIC!", or "This list made me laugh", or "your taste sucks"
2) People are making pointless lists - "why 'overrated' lists suck', 'facts about james blunt', and other retarded stuff, such as making lists about lists
3) People leaving lame comments and jokes all over them
Lists are about music, for one, hence the term 'music lists'. If you are using the 'other' feature for something other than music, please stop. Second, stop insulting people - you are just going to drive them away from the site. This isn't about who has the better taste, it's about everyone getting a better taste. Recommend albums, don't diss people. Jokes are fine if and only if you already know the person - don't pull jokes on newbies.
I'll be deleting stuff that violates this

I'm definitely guilty of a couple of those "this list made me laugh" things. Sorry, I, and the rest of us, should've known better.
Earlier, you talked about how lists and their popularity and how you wanted to show off the feature more on the main page.
Now that you know why lists are so popular, you don't have to worry about making them as much of a focus on the main page anymore.

It's been like that from the beggining pretty much. :-\

Please still allow me to post "SLAYERRRRR" in south_of_heaven_11's lists without fear of deletion. And yeah, I've said plenty of stupid things that I might have changed if there was an edit box for the comments, but there's not. I'll try to refrain from doing so from now on.

Yea, I told La Revolucion he could post 'SLAYER' on my journals and stuff. But I must confess I have made one or 2 of those lists...apologies...
Perhaps it is time we made some stricter rules for lists...

I'm probably alone on this, but I think the lists are just a pointless idea in general

You're not. They were cool at first, but everyone makes the same ones now. With the same bands.

But they're one of the most popular features on the site. I just say we should have stricter rules.

Are you guys completely misunderstanding why lists are so popular?

I disagree with this. My lists were awesome and fun, and if you take those away then all that's left are more generic "my fav bands/albums/guitarists" lists that keep flooding the site anyway.
I wouldn't mind so much if there was a way to view all the lists that had been posted in the last few days instead of a limited number on the front page. Like with the old tab sites, there should be a [more] option to click and see what else was posted. That way the lists that fall off the front page aren't completely lost for browsing :)

my fav prog list just lost all of its comments... idk if i did some thing bad but just looking for an expanation

Actually, it seems like EVERY SINGLE LIST has lost all of its comments if it was posted before today. This is not a solution, this is a genocide of comments!
Okay that might be taking it a little too far, but you went too far first Jeremy. Was every single comment really that bad?
Let's not jump to conclusions, I didn't delete anything.
EDIT: It was a bug. Next time give me the benefit of the doubt before jumping all over me.

Yeah I figured it was probably a bug, but I knew that the deletion of my lists definitely wasn't so I guess I jumped to conclusions about the both of them. Sorry, I'll try to make better lists (and less vitriolic comments on other people's lists) in the future.

Maybe we should have classes for lists, like we do for reviewers. It might be too much work, but oh well. It's just a though.
This problem is pretty bad though.

Or remove lists altogether. It makes the site look less professional and more like rateyourmusic.com, where there are no standards for reviewing. Lists detract way more than they add in my opinion. Just the fact that there are so many grammatically incorrect, randomly capitalized list titles makes the front page look messy.

I agree with this.
The main problem I see is that whenever someone makes a list that someone else doesn't like (usually one that entails mainstream acts like Nirvana and etc.), loads of people, regulars, noobs, and even some mods descend upon them like a swarm of locusts and tear the list and it's maker apart for it. It's ridiculous. It was a cool feature at first, but now people spend more time making joke lists or assaulting each other than talking music.

Yes, I must agree.
Or at the very least, remove them from the front page. The lists are nothing more than a display window into the dregs of Sputnik society. More or less.

Moderate lists more. They're a more popular feature than news, yet we have two news mods and no list mods =/.

There's nothing to moderate with lists. There are just idiots to ban.

Well it's nothing the mods can't handle imo, just a lot of the flaming/overdone jokes on lists don't get reported. Besides, who would honestly want such a meek title as "List Mod"?
Hep Kat

If anything, just allow the news mods the power to moderate lists. It isn't really neccesary though, imo.

Lists should be a community based thing, that are posted on say a biweekly basis.
I mean R&M and Alt/Indie and various forums do "TOP guitarists" TOP blah blah
why not capitalize on this forum based thing and use it too be a "featurette" on sputnik.

IMO, great idea pixiesfan. Maybe have people post their lists in a topic in one (or more) of the forums instead, and have one picked a day as the "featured" list i.e. the only one on the page. People could still make their profile lists and such, and it might motivate everyone to start making worthwhile lists (and while they're at it, explanations.) The only problem I see with it, though, is that ideas may run dry quickly, as well as the fact that more personal lists (such as a musical timeline or something more personal to someone's own life) might not be the right kind to be little "featured" ones. Otherwise, I like the idea and second it, guys.

Wow, that "5 things about music" list got really out of hand.
40+ comments in a few minutes. Mods are most likely wielding the banhammers (I kept my comment fairly respectable)

And they're always mine.
I don't think lists should really be changed, but the idea pixies came up with should somehow be integrated in as well.
